View Full Version : NY Yankees 2005 Season

21 Days, 30 minutes & counting till pitchers and catcher report.
The Big Ugly is in the fold, Tino's back, the nightmare of the events of October 2004 still hang in the air like the smell of animal decomposition, and with nothing but the Super Bowl left of any sports relevance...it's time to start talking Yankee baseball, in earnest.
Will Tino wear #24? (which seems to be main topic over at Yankees.com)
Will Johnson's back/knee hold up?
If it does & he pitches like he did last year in Arizona, when you add the Yankee offense, does he make a run at some records for starting pitchers?
Why the hell did we sign Rey Sanchez?
These & more burning questions are waiting to be answered. Here's a place for us to do it.
Enjoy.and, as always.
GO YANKS!

I am very excited/nervous for this upcoming season.
After last seasons disappointment, I really hope they come through this year with a world series victory.
My burning question is:
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY GOING TO DO WITH GIAMBI?
how healthy will he be? can he just be the DH all year? what happens when they want to rest on of their outfielders? Would you really pull sheffield out of the lineup to leave Giambi at DH?

Thanks to Reef for my sig. You rock

Yeah, well so does your mom!!!!
Just kidding.
Giambi will be the full time DH, or near full time DH.
Bernie will get some time there too I bet.
I think Cairo is a big loss for y'all, I got a bad feeling abuot Tony Womack's back. He's kinda old.
Look for Sheff's numbers to dip, he had a career year. And Posada should be breaking don a bit too.
Jaret Wright, worst signing of the year.

WOULD YOU GO AWAY, THIS IS A YANKEES THREAD!!
Kidding...seriously, though, I agree that Giambi will be the nearly full-time DH. The question is what will he give you? If he's got nothing, the Yankee order will still be potent, but Torre will have a seizure everyday when he tries to fill out the line-up card.
Joe's always been a big fan of working opposing pitching staffs just by looking at the line-up. Knowing when you go to the pen against the Yankes, you're always at a spot in the order where there's L, R, Switch & in a key situation you just can't leave a lefty specialist on the mound because a big time right-handed batter is never far off & vice versa.
If Giambi shows signs of production, the utopian Yankee order probably looks like this:
1 - Womack - 2B (L)
2 - Jeter - SS (R)
3 - Giambi - DH (L)
4 - Rodriguez - 3B (R)
5 - Sheffield - RF (R)
6 - Matsui - LF (L)
7 - Posada - C (S)
8 - Williams - CF (S)
9 - Martinez - 1B (L)
...but, if Giambi continues to suck moose nuts, things get a little bunched up:
1 - Womack (L)
2 - Jeter (R)
3 - Rodriguez (R)
4 - Sheffield (R)
5 - Matsui (L)
6 - Posada (S)
7 - Williams (L)
8 - Giambi (L)
9 - Martinez (L)
Still formidable, but the only time a DH should hit 8th is for a NL team playing interleague and they only have extra middle infielders to plug into the lineup.
But, as we all know, none of it will matter till late September & into October. And when we get there, the most important questions will still be: (1) is the starting pitching still in tact? (2) Has the bullpen performed all year & are they ready for the playoffs? Only then will it matter asking (3) how is the lineup?
I just can't wait for the season to get here.
I think Cairo is a big loss for y'all, I got a bad feeling abuot Tony Womack's back. He's kinda old.
Agreed that Cairo is a loss, but as long as Womack does a decent job at the top of the order & JEter doesn't have to lead off, it won't make that big a deal. If he's (Womack) not healthy...our lineup is fucked. I hate not having a true leadoff hitter, and I think Jeter is wasted there even though he does well there in streaks.
Look for Sheff's numbers to dip, he had a career year.
Agreed that he had a career year. But the fact that he did so in constant pain leads me to believe that if he's 100% healthy, another monster year is not out of the question.
Jaret Wright, worst signing of the year.
I'm inclined to agree with you here, at least in the fact that Wright might be a bust. However, I'm still petrified that given the low expectations of Wright and conversely, the high expectations of Pavano -- someone I'm still not sold on being anything more than a one-year-wonder -- Carl might still take the title of "Worst Signing." I wanted Clement & Milton before Pavano...I pray I was wrong.

i'm not thrilled about Wright either, but he is no worse then Milton. Pavanos numbers are going to jump just moving to the AL, but he is better than Milton. If Clement finds his control he will be well worth the money the Sox spent on him.

I'm not trying to be Timmy Technical, but I'm more surprised that they didn't want him...at least not at the price Boras was asking for.
Something was very odd about how the Yankees tackled free agency this year. They misread the market terribly. They wouldn't give Leiber what he wanted, and he wound up getting more from Philly. They wouldn't give Milton what he was asking for, he got more from Cincy. They didn't even talk to Beltran after the opening numbers Boras presented, he got even more from the Mets.
Hopefully all these players become horrific flops in their new cities and the Yanks come out looking smart, but I wouldn't bet on it.
i may be the only Yankee fan who can't stand Tino Martinez. nothing upsets me more then him coming back. i'm not even sure what it is. i think its the love he gets from the fans that gets me. he is an okay player, but the way Yankee fans liked him you would think he is a Hall of Famer.
I think it's the fact that he replaced the most beloved player in recent history at that time, and did so with quiet class, much the same as the man he was replacing. And doing it in the middle of a dynasty-like run of championships makes it all the more easy to love a guy.
But don't misunderstand my views of Tino for 2005...I don't look for anything in the way of production from him. Just a solid glove at 1st, and one more lefty to pitch to at the Stadium. Anything he does with his bat is pure gravy.
ya know if you didnt say tino, i woulda thought you were talkin about don mattingly
That's because you're a filthy Red Sox fan...now go away.

I think people are making a little too big a deal about the Wade Miler signing. There must be a reason why noone else took a flier on this guy.
Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see him crush the hearts of Yankee fans with a dominating season, leading Boston to a rematch of the 86 series with the Mets, but I just have a feeling he'll be mediocre.

I agree and that's the thing I'm most interested in seeing. My understanding was that he played so hard through the pain in the hope that this (last season) was his best chance to win the Series. Did doing that irreparably damage his arm/shoulder? If not and he's healthy -- watch out.

Sounds like Cairo wanted to come back but his agent fucked up. From today's Daily News:
AGENT BLUE & ORANGE: Miguel Cairo has a new employer ... and a new agent. Cairo said Alan Nero never informed him of some offers made by the Yankees, and the utility infielder was blind-sided when the Bombers turned to Tony Womack, so he fired the agent. Still, Cairo said he's excited to be a Met, and he has a comfort level with Willie Randolph, who recruited him. "They told me it's going to be a good number of at-bats," Cairo said.

Piss on the Yanks all you want, just do it in the Mets' thread, the Red Sox thread, or some other Yankee Haters thread and leave our quaint little Yankees fan thread alone. That's all I was asking.
And, no, I don't want to beat you about the head & shoulders for messing with the Yanks. I want you to come to the poker game to take some of your money. That's much more enjoyable. Like Snoogans said, I can take the verbal abuse. Especially after what happened this past year, it's Yankee fans' time to take a little crap from the haters. We'll be ok again soon.

I think the Yanks will be just fine too. Actually, I'm very confident they win it all this year. The pitching's better, and I think they've been a little complacent the past few years. It's natural, they won alot. But they brought back a few old Yanks Tino Martinez, and more importantly, Joe Girardi as bench coach. Torre brings alot to the table, but has some blind spots as well. I was ENORMOUSLY impressed with Girardi's work on YES. I think he will make, not a good, a GREAT manager when Torre goes. He has natural leadership about him, high standards, and competitive smarts and fire. I love him as bench coach.

That article was cute, and fairly accurate. But I must admit (and this becoming quite a burden), it is not nearly as entertaining or poignant as any of the Bill Simmons (Sawx fan) articles from October.

And in other Yankees news...take it easy Yogi!! (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1981902) Berra loses his mind over a mildly humorous TV commercial.

Simmons is histerical. But his constant anti New York Articals and points in his articals does get a bit old at times.

Maybe the euphoria of the Sawx in the Series had him in good spirits, because his articles from October seemed to take it easy on NY. I haven't read many others of his. Although his WrestleMania XX article was one of the best & funniest articles on any topic I've ever read.

A healthy Sheff? Watch out.
Yankees: Sheff expected to be 100 percent for opener
by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Wednesday, February 2, 2005
News
Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield's left shoulder rehab is going well, and the slugger is expected to be 100 percent for the season opener. Sheffield will begin swinging a bat next week, which will be a major step in assessing his progress. "You pick up a bat, everything could be different," he told the New York Post. "The way I feel, I feel great. When you pick up the bat and see a 90-mile-an-hour ball coming, it's a different story." Sheffield underwent surgery on November 30 to remove some scar tissue.
Views
Sheff battled through the sore left shoulder last season and only managed to finish with 36 homers, 121 RBI, and 117 runs. With that joint now repaired, he could actually better those stats in 2005.
Yankees: A-Rod working hard
by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Friday, February 4, 2005
News
Alex Rodriguez didn't spend the winter enjoying life as an incredibly rich 29-year old in Manhattan. He instead chose to work out six days a week at the University of Miami with the school's strength coach and varsity baseball team. A-Rod's workout, which started early in the morning and lasted three hours, consisted of pushing sleds, liftingweights, and running sprits. "[Owner George Steinbrenner] wants me to lead and lead by example and not to try to fit in," Rodriguez told ESPN.com. "There are 650 or 700 other players who are sleeping, or taking their kids to school. But there's no way they're going to be running the stairs or doing what I'm doing" Rodriguez hit .286 with 36 home runs and 106 RBI during his first season in pinstripes.
Views
Rodriguez was already the premiere third baseman in fantasy baseball and ranks among the best players in the game. He'll begin to reap the benefits of his hard work in a few weeks when he reports to spring training and tries to help the Yankees break their four-year drought of world championships.

Almost three months after finishing second to Guerrero, Sheffield is still confused. "Everybody said he won it in the last week but I sat out the last week because we had a big lead," Sheffield said. "At the start of the year I had two homers and he had 15. Look at the park he hits in and that's hogwash."
No, he's not crying at all.

Anyway sheffield should not be bashing Giambi no matter what the circumstances. They are a team. No need to bash him to make yourself look better.
I hope Giambi hits 40 homers this year to shut everyone up. I will not, however, make the same mistake i made last year and take him in round 3 of my fantasy draft.

No, I don't think he did well either.......they also went to the minors last year a brought up Halsey (who we lost through the trade). Halsey wasn't that bad, I really liked him, he even outpitched Pedro once last year. I'm not familiar with their minor league pitchers this season, but maybe that's where they'll go again if they need a 6th and Tanyon doesn't work out in that spot.

Snoogans...there was absolutely no reason for defiling the Yankee thread any further with that garbage.
But it's OK, it's all just going to make the end of this year that much more enjoyable. Both when I beat your ass in fantasy baseball & when the Earth tilts back on its' axis & resumes its' proper rotation, putting Boston back in their rightful place...on the golf course in October, talking about how much they all hate the Yankees a month or so earlier.
As far as Yankee spot-starting, I think the first young guy we'll see this year is Chien-Ming Wang. Gotta showcase him for a trade sooner or later. But as long as it isn't against the Sawx, a spot start by Sturtze wouldn't be awful either on a day where the pen is nice & rested.

Some unexpected Yankees love from Tool...very nice. Although I will be scrutinizing the picture for the next few minutes to make sure there isn't some hidden anti-Yankee message in there.
Snoogans...you are correct, I am a horseshit Texas Hold 'Em player. But I'm not afraid of Manny, especially when not even his own team likes him & they can't wait to get him out of town & start bashing him.
Kev...I don't know how much time he'll see (at least not without another Kevin Brown meltdown) but they talk about him like he's the real deal.
I'm more excited for the future, though, when hopefully one of the six nearly-identicle 6'5" farmboys they drafted this past year start to develop. Unfortunately, I think every one of them is right handed.

Cripps. The Yankee Lower Level Minors is supposed to be terrific. The Yankees Drafted players that other teams did not draft beacuse they could not sign. Beacuse they wanted a ton. its only their AAA thats shitty the rest is pretty damn good. In fact the Dbacks would of been glad to take any of them but they could not justify dealing RJ and getting people their fans have never heard of.

This is true, but like they say that jump from A & AA to MLB is huge. I just want to keep reading good reports on player development. As much as I love having the ammo to make the big trade, this year will be the tenth since we last developed & fielded a homegrown pitcher who worth a damn.

Williams offered the first strong defense of A-Rod yesterday when asked for his reaction to the procession of Red Sox players who have bashed Rodriguez over the past week, calling him a "clown" and saying he wasn't a "Yankee type." Several Sox implied A-Rod wasn't a true Yankee because he hadn't been part of the championship teams of the late '90s, but Williams said that was a silly sentiment.
"You have probably one of the greatest Yankees that ever wore this uniform, and that's Cap (Don Mattingly), and who would argue that he's not a true Yankee?" Williams said. "Still, he didn't win a World Series here. I just don't think that's an accurate statement."
So, without losing a shred of dignity, Bernie shoots a cannon through that logic and sheds light on the Red Sox inadvertently showing a lack of respect for Donnie Baseball, one of the most beloved Yankees of them all. Nicely done.

Wrong. ARod has been with the team one year while Mattingly spent his entire career with the Yankees. It was about length of tenure with the team, NOT rings won.
Besides, who could (or would) possibly argue that Mattingly was never a true Yankee simply because he never won a ring? That's like saying Ted Williams wasn't a true Red Sox or Ernie Banks wasn't a true Cub.

David Wells is not a "True Yankee", he has 2 rings. Reggie Jackson was a self obsessed ego maniac, not a true Yank type, 2 rings. Mattingly is the epitome of a true Yank, 0 rings.
Do I think A-Rod is a true Yank? Not yet. But he can be. I dont think he's as bad as the Red Sox make him out to be. Big ego? Sure. But I think he wants to win and is such a great talent he'll be fine from now on. First years are usually tough in the Bronx.
And remember this, he has produced in big spots before (1995/1999 against Yanks in playoffs)
Schilling however, is definitley a true Red Sox. A loudmouth know it all.

Fan wins e-bay auction, names Fleet center in Boston "The Derrick Jeter Center" (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1999921)
Hilarious! Some wiseguy wins a bid to rename the Fleet Center in Boston for a day.

On Tuesday, New York attorney Kerry Konrad won the right in an eBay auction to name Boston's FleetCenter for a day. For his $2,325, Konrad wanted to honor the New York Yankees shortstop.
But, on Friday, FleetCenter officials rejected the name, which Konrad hoped would add to the 25-year rivalry he has had with his former college classmates who are Boston Red Sox fans.
"We decided that all the names had to be rated G, and this name was determined to be obscene and vulgar," said Richard A. Krezwick, president and chief executive of the FleetCenter
Vulgar?

Teammates support, Fans cheer Giambi (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=klapisch_bob&id=1997808)
I thought the reaction would be more hostile. It is Florida, but fans are known to be forgiving.
The fans at the ballpark were just as kind. Giambi evoked more cheers from the 2,772 spectators in attendance than any other Yankee except for Jeter -- a response the first baseman said was "pretty incredible."
"It kind of leaves you speechless," Giambi said. "Everybody looks at you as a player, but for the guys in this clubhouse to rally around you, and for the fans to look at you as a human being, that's special, no doubt about it."
I'm still pissed off at him, but I might even get swept up in this. We'll see what happens in NY.

I'm looking foward to seeing them play the lowly Cubs this year. BTW, is "lowly" officially part of their name, or does everyone just use it anyway?
Wrigley is a such a throwback Ballpark. And, I believe the Yankees have never played there before in history. They certainly haven't met in the World Series in the past 80 years, though the Yanks have been there 40 times. Having the Yanks should class the place up quite a bit.
I cant wait for the season to start. Let the Yankee juggernaut get about its business of destroying everything in its path.

It's amazing.... No pun intended. That That Great Mets team only won 1. I firmly believe that they could have given the 96-2001 Yankees a run for their money.... Or might have even been better talent wise. The only reason i would make the Yankee team better is Mariano.

86 Mets vs 98 Yanks.
98 was the peak of the run.
I think the 86 Mets had better starting pitching. The 98 Yanks were better in the other areas (Lineup, Bullpen, Bench)
Having watched both teams, I'd have to like the Yanks. The differential with starters wasn't that big, and I've never seen a team as efficient as the 98 Yanks. They just seemed to do everything right, all the time.
I (obviously) never saw the 39 Yanks, but historians say that and 27 were the only comparable teams. Not just among Yankee teams, any team ever.

Exactly. Give me the 86 Mets vs 96 Yanks.

Jimmy Fallon kissing Drew Barrymore -- on the field, on live TV -- right after the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. In fact, they were shown in a closeup within 60 seconds of the final out. And every Red Sox fan is determined to pretend that this never happened, and that it didn't taint the moment even a little bit ... so it wasn't a huge deal.</center>

Ah yes they are still obsessed with us. Its good to see we still own their asses. They are like a fucking physco ex.... Leave us alone we don't care. Have fun being one of the teams no one gives a rat's ass for now that you have won. And by the Way Jeter is not the one doing incredibly gay Springsteen lip-sync videos and going queer eye like some redsox players. And Tool. I would counter act with a Met bashing banner but no one cares enough to make one so they do not exist.

Which would make Pavano & Wright = 3 & 4, which doesn't make me all that confident. I'm not trying to be doom & gloom, but I'm just not sold on those two having the kind of years they had last year. We'll see, and I'll be happy as hell to be proven dead wrong...I'm just not in love with this staff.

I don't know CH. Unless Pavano and Wright go Vazquez on the Yanks and Randy gets hurt you should breeze to the World Series. Look at it this way: if you had RJ for one game during the LCS last year you would have gone to the WS. Now you have him for three.

Boondock is 100% right. We had no business being anywhere near where we were last year. That pitching staff was AWFUL!!!!! To beat a minnasota team that had the better sp by far. and then going 7 games Being 3-0 up vs a team that had by far the best 1 2 pitchers in the series was pretty amazing. I tell you what RJ pitches ANY of thos 4 games. We do not choke. And unlike Javy. Pavano has pitched in crunch time and pitched well.

Tonight really couldn't have gone better.......162-0?!
I think everybody looked great, except for maybe Bernie. I've come to terms with the fact that this is his last year in pinstripes. He'll probably still bat .270 with 15-20 HRs, he's not going to be a total flop by any stretch of the imagination and as far as #8 hitter go throughout the league he's quite stellar for that spot, but his time with the Yanks is up after this season.

I AGREE!
Johnson looked great... Giving up only 1 run through 6, with 5 K's.
Matsui CONTINUES to be the most consistent Red Sox killer... robbed a HR and then hit one of his own.
Giambi's seeing the ball well again.
Tino's return was superb... he was only in for like 3 innings and IMMEDIATELY contributed with that SICK diving play.
Everyone's looking great (except Bernie and Flash)... But man, what a picture-perfect opening day. I like it a lot.

I know this isn't technically a "Yankee" comment, but holy crap did I love Javy Vazquez giving up 7 runs and 10 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings. The best part was he was booed after he walked off the mound. It pisses me off when sports writers say the Yanks gave up on Vazquez to quickly, well if today was any indication, no we didn't!

I don't know what it is about Matsui, but he just fucking OWNS the Red Sox. They can't stop him. He's 3 for 4 today, 6 for 9 over the last 2 games with 2 HR's. I'd say he just knows the Sox pitching real well, but he's faced 2 NEW pitchers so far that the Sox didn't even have last season. He's just an amazing fundamental baseball player.
