But where will I go to hear the some handful of "alternative" songs play over and over again?
Seriously -- this is the end of an era. WHFS was once a great radio station like WNEW was. When you make radio bland and corporate, it dies.

Ditto what AJ said. I was a big fan of HFS back in the 80s.
This could have a direct effect on WJFK because Infinity may decide to move the Sports Junkies back to the station where they got their start.

Since the Junkies get paid through October no matter what, the rumor is that they will be moved back to middays to JFK, replacing O'Reilly. (PLEASE!!)

WOW!
I just let out a gasp. I had assumed this was just a "bash HFS" thread. This is a REAL end of an era here in DC. One of the country's first big time "alternative" stations has bit the dust.
What a great place it was back in the 1980s - I once even applied there in '87! I even tollerated it into the early 1990s. Once they got rid of "The Daily Feed," and DC-101 got up to speed, that was pretty much it for me.
Maybe both "The Junkies" and "Love Line" can find a home back at WJFK.

Jesus fucking christ. There is so little good radio, at least HFS had good songs from time to time when you're flipping. Honestly, I listen to JFK all day (except JB and Bill O'Rilley) and hate music radion because the music is so terrible, but christ now i'll have less stations to flip to in hopes of finding eight minutes of songs during commercial breaks. Oh, yeah, and I hope the Junks come over here for middays.

Man, this just crushes me.
The only other rock station on the dial is DC 101 - and they're horribly unreliable (way, way, WAY too much of shitty modern music for my taste).
WHFS would at least play more actual alternative music.
Christ, this sucks. Frankly, I didn't give a shit about catching O&A, or Stern, etc., but this here is an honest-to-God incentive for me, now, to get satellite radio.

I hope to God the Junkies do end up back on JFK taking the midday slot. It would be just desserts for El Jefe, after all the bad mouthing he's been doing towards the Junkies lately. I'm sure he will pussy out and say it was all a joke if they show up to work on the same station. But then, why doesn't the Latin Wonder try to get a prime spot at HFS since it's broadcasting with his people now. Oh... that's right, he doesn't even speak Spanish.....another example of his phony radio persona.

Wow, that's horrible. The same thing happened here in Nashville in '99. Our major Rock Station WKDF went from 30 years of doing rock to country music. The DJs were all gone during the last two weeks. And on midnight of it's last day they played "Closing Time" non stop until 6 AM, at which point they played "It's the End of the World As We Know It (I Feel Fine)." After that their new morning show started and it was a country station from then on. It started April 1st, I remember everyone hoping to God that it was some terrible prank.

We'll see. The Junkies (and HFS) actually did pretty well in the Baltimore ratings, compared to DC.
Christ, this sucks. Frankly, I didn't give a shit about catching O&A, or Stern, etc., but this here is an honest-to-God incentive for me, now, to get satellite radio.
All of my friends who have been life-long DC folks are crushed as well. While they have been a shadow of what they once were, at least there was something.
And I'm with you - this is the first time I've really felt an immediate urge to get satellite radio. I had been saying that I could hold off until I get a new car in the next couple of years, and see where I am with that - but now - eeesh.
And no warning at all. The Junkies were busy qualifying people for prizes and trips this morning, all during their show, as if nothing was going to happen. The fact that their website hasn't changed kind of indicates that they were clueless too.
Also, all the stations have moles that report back to the Post and DCRTV Dave, and they were both surprised by this. Odds are, company big wigs called them at 11am and said, "Sorry guys - clear out your desks. We are flippin' the switch in an hour. Adios, motha fuckers!"
Horrible.

Man, this is awful.
Obviously, the station has been a horrible shell of it's former greatness for over 5 years now, but up until about 1997-1998, it REALLY was an actual "alternative" station....basically like a college radio station with a huge reception area.
End of an era. At least they went out playing a song truly representative of the good ol' days.
Radio is dying in DC.

DCRTV is all over the story (http://www.dcrtv.com/)
The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A4390-2005Jan12.html) has a front page (!) story today, complete with an interview with Damian, one of the original DJ's, and son of onetime owner of HFS. "They really weren't interested in the music anymore. There really wasn't that much creativity there. Having been there for so long and having done so many things there, of course it's sad. But I guess you gotta do what you gotta do." There's also talk of the ramification on the local music scene.
The Washington Times (http://www.washingtontimes.com/business/20050113-125740-2965r.htm) speculates that The Sports Junkies will wind up back at WJFK, AND that they had no idea of the switch until right after their shift. OH! And HFS afternoon guy, Tim Virgin, is going back to New York, to work at (gasp) WNEW.
And there's also talk of 98 Rock out of Baltimore declaring victory, and doing lame on air celebrations over this, which (imo) is pretty uncool. Now, with no competition, 98 Rock can revert back to lazy radio.
The Hideout didn't offer anything really new to the discussion last night, except for lots of jokes about El Jefe being a wanna be Mexican; they talked about feling bad for anyone in radio who gets fired; and Tommy Bateman did go on to talk about what WHFS meant to those of us who have been around DC through the 80s and early 90s, and how it really was a great thing. They hinted that they wouldn't be surprised if some people from there showed up at JFK.
Ron and Fez, from what little I heard, made a good point of saying that they should have brought in some of the old DJs, most of whom still work in this market, and have the class to close out the calll-letters with some style.
Finally, from what I understand, on D&M, there was lots of talk about the switch; Don's wife, Freda, worked there in the 1970s; they added to the speculation about the Junkies coming to WJFK.
It was odd - towards the end of Ron & Fez, regular listener, Kane/Pyle called up and said he would miss The Junkies and hoped they popped up somewhere soon, and Ron, hinting that an announcement could be soon, added, with a bit of sarcasm to Kane/Pyle's comment, "We'll see."
Hmmmmm...
Man - if they could finally get rid of that nightmare of O'Reilly & James Brown and put the Junks in from 11-3, then WJFK would be (as Jefe called it) the NY Yankees of local radio.

The only semi-"alternative" station left is WRNR 103.1, though I can barely pick that up. I read on the 9:30 Club's message board there's talk of re-launching that with a stronger signal and a new station to replace WHFS in the DC/Baltimore area.

DC-101 has been playing tributes to WHFS all day, which was surprising and pretty nice, while 98 Rock played promos taunting the fact that HFS went spanish. Kind of missing the point - that dog is dead. Nothing more to do. They aren't hurting anyone's feelings, except the listeners.
HA! - Very funny side note..."El Jefe" is telling a story about he was tapped by managment to go run the overnight board at the new WHFS - "El Zol" - because he's Spanish, even though he can't really speak Spanish.
Cool stories about walking in the station after the bomb dropped; how everything is still there from before the flipped the switch, from the CDs to the god records on the walls.
Supposedly all of the Infinity stations in the area got their "Spaniards" together to go work the boards! HA!
"This music reminds me of my aweful childhood growing up in West Texas..." he said, as went all to he tell the stories about how all of the Whities still working there couldn't help by give Jefe the hairy eye-ball. LOL!
Anyway, supposedly there might be news really soon about the Junkies coming to WJFK - hopefully R&F are safe.

I just hope managment sees it the same way.
I always thought the move to mornings was a huge mistake for the Junks; they had such a huge following in the evenings. Infinity just thought they could cut into Elliott's numbers with that demographic, divide and conqueror, and there-by increase Stern's numbers.
Ultimately, if I was as powerful as I'd like to be, I'd have it be R&F's call - do they want middays, or do they want to stay in the evenings, and how would that factor in if or when D&M move out of the 3-7 slot - would that be the ultimate gooooooooaaaaal for them?
* Plop Junkies in 11-3. When Stern moves, shuffle D&M to the AM, and R&F to the 3-7; in the current Ron and Fez slot, either The Hideout, or the guys who do the "Out to Lunch" show in Baltimore. Then bring in the live feed from "Love Line" late at night, and rerun tape of O'Reilly 3-6am. Problem solved.
One more (hopefully final) thing regarding WHFS - back in 1995 I was getting pretty down on the station; it was clearly not what it had been just a couple of years earlier. In October of that year I went to LA and was shocked how much worse the "alternative" or "progressive" or "modern" rock stations were out there. I could tell no difference in the way they programmed and the way a top 40 station programmed. I appreciated WHFS all the more.
Of course, in 1996, there was the tele-communications act, which made it possible for big companies to gobble up pretty much everything - including such legendary stations as WNEW & WHFS.
Here they began bringing in people from Los Angeles to clone what had worked out there, and over time they marketed it down to a watered down shell of what it once was. About the same time, DC-101 began to getting aggressive in programming music that WHFS should have been playing. Eventually, 101 won that battle, and the war - I am glad they aren't gloating, like the white trash nonsense from Balmer.
Funny thing - DC-101 came in over 98 Rock in a poll of Baltimore Teenagers on what station they will listen to now that WHFS is off the air. In either case, the kids have a choice between two stations owned by Clear Channel, just in two different towns.
The Motley Fool talks about WHFS as well

I can remember when HFS used to break songs. You'd hear them playing something and 2 or 3 months later they would be playing on MTV or elsewhere. It was a pretty cool feeling. The first time I ever heard Sublime was on HFS. Their 'novelty' song Date Rape in 93 or 94. Apparently it was played on HFS and KROQ and that was pretty much it. When Bradley died, it made the news as the singer of that 'novelty' band Sublime, of course then the album was realeased and things went nuts for them...

The real moment of WHFS' "death" for me was a Sunday morning in 1998. I was driving home, and Metallica's "Unforgiven" came on, and I clearly remember staring at my radio for a few seconds in confusion. I had only listened to HFS for maybe 10 years at the most at that point, but playing a band like Metallica was a HUGE about-face in the type of music they played.
Metallica, at the time, was obviously a DC101 "type" of band. Them being played on WHFS just really sealed the deal in terms of them "selling out." From then on, it was just all downhill.
But even before that, by '96 or '97, they had even stopped really showcasing local bands and shows, and that was just awful. DC (And Baltimore by extension) had and still has a big enough and famous enough music scene that completely ignoring it is something that still baffles me.

It's sad to see HFS go but they weren't really worth much but for the HFStival these days. They marketed themselves as the "true alternative" and "the legendary HFS" but it wasn't believeable when you could hear the exact same songs on DC 101, which also had a better signal in the northern va. area.
Occasionally HFS would play a good song, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Mars Volta, Interpol, some of the arty indie bands that you can't help but love, but then it would be back to Staind, and whatever corporate rock group was regining at the time.
I'll miss the march madness month, where ppl voted for the best songs and groups, as well as the HFStival where i got to see RATM live for the first and only time. Too bad I missed 2004's HFStival for Prom (it wasn't worth it).

<P>LEGENDARY HFSTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS 16TH YEAR ON SATURDAY, MAY 14... FOO FIGHTERS, COLDPLAY, AND GOOD CHARLOTTE, AMONG OTHERS, HEADLINE EVENT... The 2005 HFStival will return to Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday, May 14, it was announced today by Robert Philips, Senior Vice-President and Market Manager of Infinity Radio/Baltimore. The popular event in its 16th year will feature more than 25 bands, including FOO FIGHTERS, COLDPLAY, GOOD CHARLOTTE, BILLY IDOL, GARBAGE, ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN, SOCIAL DISTORTION, THE NEW YORK DOLLS, SUM 41, INTERPOL, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, LOUIS XIV, UNWRITTEN LAW, JIMMIE'S CHICKEN SHACK, THE BRAVERY, CITIZEN COPE, AND THE STEREOPHONICS. According to Lisa Worden, WHFS Program Director, "The HFStival is a landmark for radio station festivals. It's more than a concert, it's an event that people of all ages look forward to all year long. This year's line-up is an excellent representation of the bands featured on WHFS throughout the station's 34-year history." The HFStival was previously held in Baltimore once before-in 1999 where the show sold out to a crowd of 80,000 people. Previous concerts have been held each year in and around Washington, D.C. A well-publicized format change on the original WHFS frequency occurred this past January. The Legendary HFS is now broadcasting evenings and weekends on Baltimore's "Live 105.7" (FM). </P>
