View Full Version : The Presidential Inaugaration

Even though its more than a week away, the reports of the big day on the 20th of January are already starting. It is expected to cost over 50 million dollars, in which most of which is being paid for by the private sector.
I voted for Bush, but I believe its a waste of fucking money. I am not against having inaugaration festivities, but it should be toned down a bit. We are in a time of war. The money going into this bash could be spent to help protect our troops in harms way. For example a suite at the Mandarin Hotel in DC is going for something like 4 g's a night. Body armor for 1 soldier costs btwn 1 and 2 thousand dollars.
In no way am I against inaugaration day, but in a time like this, I feel that 50 million dollars is being pissed away

Give George W. Bush a break. Let him celebrate. After all he did something his dad didn't do. Became president for a 2nd time.
But the money can be better spent on other stuff, like increasing the benefits of veterans, etc. But I guess that's not as important to Bush as throwing one big hoohah. But he does talk a good game about supporting the troops 100% though.
I think these inauguration celebrations are a waste of time. But I could live with them doing it only when the President first enters office. The celebration this year and for Clinton in 96 make absolutely no sense to me.

To add injury to insult:
Breaking with tradition, the Bush campaign/inaugural committee won't reimburse the local gov't. for $11 mil. in security costs.
The Washington Post says so (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63896-2005Jan10.html)
I guess it's good to be the King... :|

Children don't have up to date school books, soldiers are cutting up scrap to armor vehicles, the CDC is underfunded, Florida (his own brother's state) is still reeling from at least 5 hurricanes, senior citizens can't get medication, California is turning into Arizona Bay, the list goes on and on...
And I understand it's privately funded, but 50 million dollars for a parade?
Be the big man W.
Step up, do something unprecidented and tell your funders that you're just going to have the legal part of being inaugurated done in the oval office and you're going to put that 50 million back into the country. If your supporters cared about the country as they claim, and not cared about their own personal special interest gains, they'd be behind you 100%. You'd at least have something in the history books that people could say was benevolent and in the best interest of the country.
On top of that, you go and say to the American public that you're putting that 50 million back into the disheveled economy and not pissing it away on some pomp and circumstance during wartime and you come out the big man and gain a huge swell of support.
That would be the right thing to do.
However, he's already won the election, and since he can't be re-elected, he has no incentive to win public support other than to line his pockets from special interest groups.
So 50 million dollars will be spent on a parade and the benefactors will gladhand with the President and get what they want to further increase their riches.
Meanwhile, a list of wives, husbands, mothers and fathers were just told that their loved one, who you sent to Iraq, was killed when a 50 millimeter round went through the door of a Humvee.
I'm sure that folded flag will make it all better.

I like Jefferon's model. He walked to the Capitol, was swiftly sworn in as President and then had a quiet lunch.
I can understand the first inaugural being a grand affair -- it may be the only one. But the second should be more subdued (at least I would do it that way if I were elected to a second term).
Unfortuately, the reason these things are as big as they are is to thanks those that gave cash to the campaign.

While you're at it, get rid of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. A total waste of money. Like we really need to see Lee Greenwood or Fleetwood Mac playing some shitty songs for some drunken a'holes who are getting loaded on the people's dime.
And I too will be voting for A.J. in 2008. He'll be running on the "I'm Not Hillary" ticket.

I'm with HBox on this one - let the winners have their day - one - in the sun. If they are lucky enough to get in a second time, then there is no need to make a big deal about it.
The world didn't fall apart when Reagan's secound inauguration was cancelled because of a blizzard. He was sworn in, and the republic continued to stand.
He was pelted with trash and booed last time, and will surely endure more this time...

There is no real sense of what the protestors will do. I do not believe it will be anywhere close to 2001, where people really believed it was a stolen election, and wanted to raise an angry voice about it.
And while protesters did outnumber supporters along the parade route, to put things in perpective, in 2001 there were 350,000 people who showed up for the inauguration - of that, only about 10% were protestors. For every 4 protestors, there was a cop, and at the end of the day (despite the spin Michael Moore did making it look like a violent affair) only one egg was thrown, and only 5 people were arrested.
Give George W. Bush a break. Let him celebrate. After all he did something his dad didn't do. Became president for a 2nd time
But...but...was he even really elected the first time?

First - the Democrats did an amazing job trying to get Kerry elected. Not only was Bush's win the narrowest margin for a sitting president since Wilson but (as the sexy and alluring Michael Moore and Al Franken love to point out) Kerry received more votes than Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton or Gore - "over 55 million Americans voted for the candidate dubbed 'The #1 Liberal in the Senate.'" That was second to only Dubya.
The Democrats did do a better job than in years past - just not as good as the Republicans. Maybe if the the Dems had captive audiences every Sunday morning - ah, well - your base is what your base is.
Second, the ability to protest is what makes this country great. If people want to go down there and protest what many think is a corrupt administration that never admits mistakes, to protest the reversal of environmental protections, to protest the threat against Roe v. Wade, to protest the way the Republicans scared the American people to vote a certain way, to protest that in four years we have gone from being beloved (ok, that's a stretch) around the world (even Iran had large prayer demonstrations after 9/11) to being viewed as (a country, not as a people) a bully without a soul, to protest the gross loss of civil liberties, to protest the obscene excess demonstrated by this inauguration, to protest the war, to protest the plans to limit the freedoms of Americans who are (gasp) Gay, to protest on behalf of the thousands of men and women who serve in the National Guard who are stuck in a 'back door draft," to protest that Cheney, Rummy, Wolfowitz and Condi are still around to do the bidding of their organization "The Project for the New American Century" (http://www.newamericancentury.org/), to protest the fact that Bush has done nothing to reveal who disclosed Valerie Plame's identity, to protest the prisoner abuse, to protest the administrations no-bid contracts to Halliburton, to protest the shambles that is "No Child Left Behind," to protest because they don't like the cut of his jib, or to protest any number of other sins they see.
Last time they were focused - this time it's going to be a free for all.

let's face it... the terrorists got George W re-elected
the number one priority for the people who voted for Bush was 'fighting terrorism'
it obviously was not health care, the economy, the deficit, the rich/poor gap, outsourcing, etc

Except to (a) meet like minded people in the flesh instead of over the internet, (b) show the rest of the country and the rest of the world that the US is not of one mind set and (c) annoy Republicans.
