View Full Version : hooking up surround sound?
I have a surround sound system(with reciever) hooked up to a DVD player. I was just wondering if there is anyway to hook up my cable tv to it?
i just always assumed that there is no way to do it except maybe running it through a VCR first. oh btw there is no audio outputs on the tv just a rf connection.

How about audio outs on the cable box?

if you're so inclined, the best advice is to take all the components you want hooked up and take note of their various inputs and outputs ... most machines from the last few years an be configured together with the right cables ...

I'll come over and hook you up, just have a bag of weed and a vagina handy...
VCR is probably easiest because if you hook directly to your cable box, you won't hear audio when you play tapes.
Or spend a few thousand bucks and get a Grass Valley router. :p

VCR is probably easiest
That's that then. Make sure the VCR has stereo in/outs if you use an old one.

Oh shit, you may not be able to run your DVD into your VCR because of the copywrite protect crap that they put in there. Your picture may fade in and out, but the audio would be fine.

Exactly.
You can't run the signal OUT of the dvd IN to the vcr. It won't work.
They do make a "digital video image stabalizer" that MIGHT enable you to run through the vcr but, it's a 50 dollar gamble.
You can go to any RadioShack and buy a multiple Input-Output box for 20 bucks. All the components get wired into the I/O box and then ONE a/v feed goes into your TV sets a/v inputs. Bobs your uncle.

What color is the rf connector out of your tv ?
RED - right channel
WHITE - left channel
YELLOW - video
I got nothing !!
I think he is trying to say that he only has a coaxial input.

if you Tv is cable ready (made in the last 10 years, maybe even older will work) then you just plug the cable wire in and it works. It has a built in tuner.
If you have digital cable, any premium channel besides HBo or want to be able to watch pay per view, you need a box.

Without a way to get the unmodulated video/audio in to the surround sound system, you're SOL unless you (as you said) run it through the VCR. I don't know of any SS systems with a built-in tuner. (**EDIT: built-in cable/TV tuner **)
You should either get a cable box (with the proper outputs) from your provider or upgrade your TV to one that has A/V out. Those are your best two options.

Meve as everyone else said, you would need to get a VCR. This is the cheapest and easiest option.
Or you can get a cable box with audio out
