View Full Version : Need help playing an "older" video game with XP

OK, I've got a brand new gaming computer which plays everything I've thrown at it brilliantly...except for one game.
I went back to play an older game, "Hitman: Codenam 47," and for some ridiculous reason, the game was not designed to be XP complent, despite coming out in 2000.
So how I can make this work? I searched around help sites, and the publisher apparently hasn't developed anything to fix this...the patch fixes other unrelated problems.
Some sites reccomended running the game in "compatability" mode, but I tried it as such for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP and nothing.
Some sites say to try and get a "NO CD crack," but all the links I've found that have those are really confusing and shady.
Basically, the game installs, but when you try and run it, it says it can't run the exe file.
Any ideas?

my lone suggestion was going to be the compatability thing.
Do you have the latest drivers for your video card installed?
The extent of my computer knowledge ends at gaming. it is the one area where I basically know nothing.
But i am building a new computer this week as a graduation gift to myself. what kind of rig did you put together for yourself?

Yeah, everything's up to date.
The computer ended up being my Xmas gift from the parents, so I had to go with a Dell as opposed to a custom job like I had wanted, just so they could understand how to buy the damn thing...but I shelled out for their gaming specialized XPS system, and the best of everything when it came to the software and hardware. Thing runs like a dream.
Changing the compatability just involves right clicking the exe file and adjusting that option, right? Do I have to reboot or anything?

Do you have the latest version of Direct X?

those XPS are some really nice gaming and all aroudn machines.
Yes, right click on the file and then choose windows 2000 to run it under the compatiability tab.
knowing now that you have a newer XPS system, I am going to go on a limb and say that you may not be able to get that game to work at all. It may have to do with the new PCI-E bus or something along those lines.

9.whatever? Yup.
I just can't believe a major game from 2000 was not made to work with XP. I have games from '98 and '99 that were designed to work with XP.
The common solution I see popping up outside of changing the compatability is finding a "NO CD crack." Anyone know where I can get one for this game?

Does your system have SP2? I believe i saw something that systems with SP2 closed the door on some compatibility with older games and 16bit games.

Yeah...it's a few years old, so there wasn't too terribly much.
All the sites I went to for cracks immediately try bombarding me with pop-ups and files and viruses and God-knows-what else, so I didn't get a chance to explore them at all.
SP2??!

I doubt it's a PCI-E problem. I have PCI-E and I've haven't had any problems with games as old as Quake 2 and Half-Life 1. It's probably an XP compatibility problem, and the best solution I can think of is that 95 compatibiliy mode thing. I looked on EIDOS' tech support website and it basically just said that the game doesn't support XP, there will be no patch to do so, and they won't offer tech support either.
If you bought your PC from Dell recently, I'm 99% sure you already have SP2, so don't worry about it. If you have Security Center in your Control panel, yopu have it. It was a huge XP update. Just make sure you automatic updates on. It'll automatically download any further Windows updates.
I'd forget about trying to get those No Cd cracks. For games that old they're impossible to find anyway, and there are so many trojans and viruses disguised as cracks it actually pretty dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

SP2??!
Service Pack 2
You can tell which version of Windowx XP you have by going to the Start menu, select Settings and Control Panel. Open the System icon and under General it should tell you which version you have.

hey mojo that sucks when you cant play a great game on a newer pc that happened to me a few yrs ago.
if you have limewire you can probably dl a co cd crack for your game, just make sure to scan the file before opening etc.
ive rarely had problems with bad files on limewire (not like that heap of infected programs kazaa).
did you check out msg boards for the games company?

Mojo, some of these older games are not compatible with the later versions of Direct X. My suggestion to you would be to check the website for any patches/updates for the game, if any. If not, you might be S.O.L.

Yeah, Eidos' basic line is, "there's no fix, there ain't gonna be a fix."
