View Full Version : Cow and Chicken -- Gone!

At the end of the year, R&F talked about revamping the opening. They used ICP's "Oddities" for 2001 and 2002, and the Kill Bill trailer music for 2003 and 2004. The constant was the "Cow and Chicken" song in the opening (you know the "dunt duh, dunt dunt dun-nuh-nuh - Ron! dunt duh, dunt dunt dun-nuh-nuh Fez!" part of the opening).
Well, the new opening is brand new and has no "Cow and Chicken". Not sure how I feel about it, but the new opening isn't that distinctiveness, but at least they pitched the "Are you ready?", "It's time", "no hesitations"... bit that's started the opening since Wonderboy's tenure

I've always been a purist, and still love the ICP intro. I was upset when they went to the KB theme.
Although I remember Fez being totally sick of ICP, and ranting about that one.
But when I listen now, (how the fuck does he do that being over 400 miles from the broadcast radius...) I still long for "The Greatest Show"!

If I may be so bold to interject into your musings with these quotes. I think these quotes sum up the 'why they did it' part
They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself-Andy Warhol
Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better-King Whitney Jr.

WJFK's philosophy is all about downgrading.
It was actually Ron's idea before the vacation to change it up and get something new (the last one, to me, was oh-so-Wonderboy).
It's a clusterfuck. I say MISS!
There's too much in it - overproduced. Parts of it are fun, but man...
Well, the new opening is brand new and has no "Cow and Chicken". Not sure how I feel about it, but the new opening isn't that distinctiveness, but at least they pitched the "Are you ready?", "It's time", "no hesitations"... bit that's started the opening since Wonderboy's tenure
Amen - I'm going to miss the familiar part, but NOT the oh-so-wonderboyed stuff from last year. I HATED the "Are you ready...?" start.
If I were to do this (and MB, you almost got an e-mail over the weekend about this), I would have kept it much more simple - used drops from four movies (Diane Weist screwming 'Don't Speak!' from Woody Allen's "Bullets OVer Broadway" - "We accept you as one of us" chant from "Freaks" - the "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to violence, the word and the act" opening to "Faster Pussycat Kill Kill - and Humphry Bogart from "The Maltese Falcon saying "When I slap you you'll take it and like it" after Ron's name is said.
Or, hey! Have Perry or Bobo do something original!
pAH!

I loathe the new opening. It's overblown and busy, yet it fails to capture the tenor of the show. I hate to say it, but it reminds me of something Tom Leykis or some other West Coast hack would open their show with.
Why not take a minimalist approach, just go with something like"Low Rider" by War or "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain. That way they lose the Christopher Walken drops and still maintain the cowbell vibe.
Actually, in my dreams the show would open with "O My Soul" by Big Star.

I distinctly remember a segment a long time ago where they took calls on what song they should open the show with (I think it was near the end of the ICP-era). A lot of suggestions, but nothing really that said 'this is it.' My favorite suggestion was Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull, but they boys said it was too long and slow to develop, and in hindsight, I think they're right.
