The inductions will be tomorrow at 1 PM. Im guessing it will be Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg although I really think it should be Sutter going in over Sandberg.

It'll be Boggs Sutter Goose and Rhyno.

Boggs is gonna wear a D_Rays cap if he has anything to say about it. I think that was tied into his contract w/ them.

I'm a Yankee fan, and in all honesty he should go in as a Red Sock. Even though his ring(s) came with the Yanks, as a player he was at his best in Fenway. He's from Tampa, and he still works w/them, and it would be nice for that franchise to have their first. But all in all I say Red Sox.

Although the HOF makes the final determination, they generally defer to the player's choice.
Except in extreme & idiotic situations like Boggs even thinking of going in as a Devil Ray.

I agree that he should go in wearing a Boston hat, but if Boggs feels strongly enough about not wanting a Sox hat on his plaque, respect him enough to at least tip the hat so as to obscure any logo. There are plenty of plaques on the wall where you either can't read the hat or it just doesn't have a logo. The dates (& teams) he played will be listed, who cares what the hat says, or if it says anything.

There may be no bigger Mattingly fan than myself, but Rice's numbers & period of dominance put him way ahead of Mattingly.

Donnie was the man for 4-6 years offensively. Whereas Rice averaged .305, 30, 110 for ten straight years even with a year thrown in where he was hurt & missed 60+ games. It is a crime that one of the most feared hitters of his time is not in the Hall while compilers continue to get in on a yearly basis.

Nolan Ryan did it first. The contract he signed with the Rangers stated that he would go into the hall with a Rangers cap. Luckily he continued to pile up the strikeouts and no-hitters with the Rangers, so it didn't seem so ridiculous come induction time.

They acheived the greatest comeback in baseball playoff history against their greatest rival and won the series for the first time in 86 years. I think your anti-Red Sox bias makes you fail to accept the fact that the Red Sox won and did so impressively. get over it.

Mikey, I spend my nights listening to your show replays so I'm a fan of yours. With that said Schilling is no hero. He got his ass handed to him in the the first game of a series he was here to win. Then totally copped out by faking hurt so he would have an excuse. A hero dives into the stands to win a game in July, not cry wolf when you lose. And yes I am bitter and pissed but they are still the Yankees and that means they are the best.

Did they win the world series or not? No. Did they win it the year before? No. In 2002? NO! In 2001? NO! That means in the last 4 years they have not been the best. Fuck the hundred win seasons, that means nothing compared to a World Series trophy. Yes they won 26 championships...and those 26 seasons, they were the best team in the league. Not anymore, and not until they win another championship.

Dude read a book if you want want stats, all you are doing is a version of I know you are but what am I. They have won an average of 1 title every 4 years since 1923. You know they keep records of these things, you should really read an article or something. Your have nothing to say except who won today but then claim to be a sports fan? It is about history as well as today and your history is laughable while the Yankees have done nothing but win consistantly for generations. Notre Dame is still the only school with a multi year, multi million dollar deal with a one of the networks, Rockne may be dead but people remeber and want to root for them. Only bad thing is they picked a new england panzy to rebuild with. Oh well cant win them all, no more than 86 years in a row at least.

BoondockSaint
01-04-2005, 01:35 PM

Exactly. Over the history of baseball, the Yankees are the best. Today, they are not.

WindowSill
01-04-2005, 01:40 PM
BUT THEY DONT WIN! So what if Notre Dame is still the only school with a multi year, multi million dollar deal with a one of the networks? BFD, that doesnt give them a fuckin championship! That doesnt mean theyre the best! So what if the Yankees have ARod, and Jeter, and Sheffield, and Mariano? That doesnt necesarilly give them a championship! So what if they have standards of excellence? So what that they cant grow their hair long or grow facial hair? That doesnt make them the best! So what if they have a history of winning? That doesnt make them the best THIS SEASON! The Yankees arent the best. Their pitching still blows. All those All Stars in the lineup are just making one another worse. They havent won a championship in 4 years. They arent the best, period. And you could go on talking about the late 90s and how dominant they were then. Shit you could talk about the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle days and how good they were then. THAT WAS THEN! THEY WERE THE BEST, THEN. In 2001, the Diamondbacks were the best team in the league. Why because they won the World Series. So what if they dont have a history of winning? So what if they dont have a shitload of rings? That one year, they were the best team in the league. And they proved it by winning the world series. In 2002, the Anaheim Angels were the best team in the league. They proved this by winning the world series. So what if they never won 3 straight championships? That one year, they were the best. In 2003, the Marlins were the best. So what if they dont average a championship every 4 years? That one year, they were the best. Last season, the Red Sox were the best team in the league. So what if they hadnt won a championship in over 86 years? LAST YEAR, THEY WERE THE BEST!

As Ric Flair said, to be the best, you gotta beat the best. And if you insist that the Yankees are the best, well every team I just mentioned beat the Yankees in the playoffs the year they won it...

I don't really know exactly what the argument is here, cuz I jumped in on this conversation a little too late, but I think I can settle it right now, because my opinion is the correct one. So you folks can use my opinion as sort of an answer key, and if you compare your opinion to mine, and yours happens to differ, it is because you are wrong:

I am a diehard Yankee fan. I am glad Boggs is in the HOF. He deserves it. .327 lifetime, 26 HR/yr, 3,010 hits, 12 all-star appearances. He had his best career years in Boston, thus, he should go in as a Red Sock.

If you have any disputes with the above sentiment, you are incorrect.

...Hope that cleared things up.

Yeah, McGuire, Ripken and Gwynn will all go in the first year. Not just three greats, but all-time fan favorites. Madden was saying he thinks Jim Rice may get in next year just because there is no one else to vote for.

Edit: It's five full seasons of retirement.

I though it was only two players at a time...so it will be a tough choice. Frankly I pick Ripken and Gwynn over McGwire

Didnt McGwire retire a year after Ripken? Maybe Im wrong...

Does it really have to be just 2 players at a time? I think they can let in more as long as they get at least 75% of the votes....

It's definitely not limited to two.

Didn't Ryan, Yount and Brett (and possibly Fisk) all go in the same year?

Gywnn, Ripken and McGwire all retied after 2001. And there is no limit to how many go in, it is 75% of the voters. It's just rare that you would get 3 in one year, all on the first ballot.

Well yeah they had 6 cause it was A) the depression and people needed to have a interest in the game again

B) there were so many greats retired at that point it was hard not to choose 6.

They were Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson and Eddie Collins (Ironically the only member of the 1919 "Black Sox" in the hall.)

With that said Schilling is no hero. He got his ass handed to him in the the first game of a series he was here to win. Then totally copped out by faking hurt so he would have an excuse.

Right.

That limping he did during the Anaheim series was a ploy -- as was the bloody sock.

No Red Sox are allowed to just play great and leave. They MUST be smeared on their way out. And hated
thereafter.

Right: Carlton Fisk, Carney Lansford, Fred Lynn, Dwight Evans, Dennis Eckersley, Dave Henderson: all were smeared and loathed.

Ryne Sandbergs stats- 2164 games played, 8385 ABs, 2386 hits, 1318 runs, 403 2B, 76 3B, 282 HR, 1061 RBI, 761 BB, 1260 SO, 344 SB, Career batting average .285...

Now, lets look at other second basemen around the league today...

Roberto Alomar - 2379 games played, 9073 AB, 1508 Runs, 2724 hits, 504 2B, 80 3B, 210 HR, 1134 RBI, 1032 BB, 1140 SO, 474 SB, Career batting avg. of ...300.

And I dont wanna list Kents and Biggios stats but Sandberg may have opened the door for these guys....and I do not wanna see Jeff Kent being voted into the Hall! Robbie Alomar too for that matter, even though his stats are obviously better than Ryno's...

Stats aren't the end-all of deciding factors. They vary greatly from decade to decade given the climate of the game at the time. Most of Sandberg's numbers are from AT LEAST20 years ago, and you're comparing him to the players that came after him (Though Alomar's been around, what, 15 years? 16?).

Just because one set of numbers gets in with one player doesn't automatically mean anyone with better numbers at a later date gets in as well.

Actually, He and the Ump patched things up years ago. Hirshbeck has a sick kid, and Alomar did alot of work w/him for related charity stuff. If the writers want to hold it against him, they should ask Hirshbeck first. He has nothing but good things to say about him now.

BTW Hirshbeck is well known in the AL for having the worlds biggest strike zone.

much he wouldn't even acknowlege them when he hit his great HR in his last AB. No, you're right AJ. The Boston Press are a bunch of homers. Rah, rah.

Were you talking about "smearing" by press or management? They are two separate things. Is the Boston press critical? That DOESN'T happen in NY as well?

Pedro: Put on any sports talk show and I guarantee you they will have discussed how Pedro his past his prime. Not they best pitcher on the planet like he was 5 years ago but still pretty good. Do you think he's worth the money and long-term contract if he can only give you 5-6 solid innings throughout the season? That's a legitimate concern, not a question.

Am I sad to see Pedro go? Sure. But we knew this was a possibility. I wish him well and am grateful for all he did for Boston. I learned with Kevin McHale this is a business and you can't be sentimental.

Boggs: I don't recall Boggs ever being smeared except for having his balls busted for the Margo Adams affair. Were Sox fans pissed to see him win a ring with the Yankees? I guess so. Personally, I was glad to see him get the ring he deserved - and should have had in '86.

Clemens: Clemens earned some smearing. He pitched half-heartedly during his last years in Boston. His little tantrum and then getting tossed during the ALDS against the A's hurt the team. What pissed fans off is all of a sudden he's the old Rocket when he goes to the Blue Jays. Why not the same effort in Boston? I'll grant you that management fucked this one up...to a point.

Ruth: What is known is that Ruth liked to party too much and management was tired of it. Even the Yankees got tired of Ruth's shit. Joe McCarthy benched him, his Captaincy was revoked, and the Yankees never made him a manager after teasing him with that promise for years.

AJ, I really try not to insult people, but that is the dumbest thing I've read on this site that was spelled correctly. WHO DO YOU THINK FEEDS THE PRESS THE SMEARS? DO THEY FALL OUT OF THE SKY?
The Ruth case is well documented that those partying stories were started by Frazee as damage control. They were true, but never a problem before he left Boston.

You follow this up by repeating all the smears about each player as if they are facts.

AJ-Notice this. Every player on my list is a first ballot Hall of Famer. Almost every one on yours is not. When a player THAT GOOD leaves, they get smeared as damage control because Management knows how rabid the fans are. Open your eyes.

Yeah -- I guess it took a press release from Dan Duquette to make people realize that at the end of his career in Boston, Clemens was overweight and his velocity and numbers were no longer what they once were.

I'm not going to defend the boneheaded moves made by the Boston front office. From 1918-2004, God knows there were enough of them. But to say that questioning the health and durability of a player in the long-term is a smear tactic is ridiculous.

Clemens and Boggs were in their mid 30s and management didn't want to sign them to long-term deals. That decision proved to be bad.

Just this past month or so we saw an another example with Pedro and Varitek. They decided not to gamble on Pedro's arm and let him go but did gamble that Varitek's knees would hold out. It remains to be seem how that plays out.

And you can even cite the Nomar trade. I guess it was only the Boston press that questioned Nomar's health and attitude. I guess it was the Boston front office that told FOX to focus on Nomar sitting alone on the bench while all his teammates were at the edge of the dugout during that marathon game at the Stadium this summer.

Look, baseball is a business. This is no different than the Yankees letting Tino go in favor of signing Giambi? How did THAT work out? They should never have let Tino go in the first place.

And if you really want to talk about management smearing a player, should I mention how Steinbrenner treated Dave "Mr. May" Winfield? How he hired investigators to dig up dirt on him? How he referred to Hideki Irabu as a "fat, pussy toad"?

The stories about Nomar being unhappy preceded the FOX broadcast. Hell, I heard them all the way down here in NY. Where do you think they got the idea to focus on him? Not the first time it he did it.
What are you arguing? That Boston smears everybody all the time? I'm a Yankee fan. We dont get into all this bench jockeying, personality stuff. You guys seem obsessed with it.

Look, baseball is a business. This is no different than the Yankees letting Tino go in favor of signing Giambi? How did THAT work out? They should never have let Tino go in the first place.

Actually, Tino hasn't done much since he left. Not that I'm defending Giambi, who I"m hoping falls down a long flight of stairs. Make that falls from a long flight to Japan.

And if you really want to talk about management smearing a player, should I mention how Steinbrenner treated Dave "Mr. May" Winfield? How he hired investigators to dig up dirt on him? How he referred to Hideki Irabu as a "fat, pussy toad"?

"Being a man means making a complete ass of yourself from time to time."-Ed Asner (from Mary Tyler Moore show) Which George did, in both cases. But that's not the same as what the Sox do to exiting Stars.

If you want to make a DIRECT comparison. Cite a player who was smeared ON HIS WAY OUT. Which is the topic we're discussing.
Plus, Irabu sucked. In libel law, truth is an absolute defense.
