Jeff and I are headed there in 2 weeks for vacation. I heard that they allow people in the crowd to light fireworks and flares, which was probably the cause of the fire.
Needless to say, I will not be seeing any concerts down there.

What, is it ok to make fun of this tragedy since there weren't thousands killed?
TheMojoPin

Kind of.
Well, not really.
But there's a huge difference between something like a tsunami, which we have zero control over, and a building fire that happened basically due to stupid and irresponsible human behavior and ultimately was completely avoidable.
In short, one is neck-deep in human error, and the other is completely devoid of it.

Fluff is right. We should have started tsunami jokes by now.
Yes this could have been avoided if people used COMMON sense. (the tsunami too with the warning alerts)
Why do thousands have to die before things get done right the FIRST time!!!

Ok, so call me the great humanitarian. Yes, accidents, stupid accidents happen such as this. I just see tragedy in any sense when people die to be a shame.

A senseless tragedy. As opposed to a sensible tragedy.
Why do people use phrases which make no sense whatsoever?

What possible "warning system" exists that could have evacuated millions of people before the tsunami hit?
The time between the earthquake and the tsunami itself itself hardly allowed for anything along those lines.
By contrast, people happily shooting off flares and fireworks INDOORS at a dangerously crowded club (which, I'm sorry, is pretty easy to eyeball in the first place), involves multiple levels of willfull human stupidity.
Look at the whole Great White fire at that rock club here in the States. Yes, overall, this many people dying in both events is horrible...but human stupidity is what ultimately caused both of them if you want to boil it down. The tsunami, on the other hand, was just people dying in huge numbers just because they were born onto a planet that decided to have a "hiccup." Outside of not living near the ocean, what else did they do that was their "fault?"
I'm not saying that it's not awful these people died in this fire...but to me, it's clear why people would react to this differently than something like the tsunami. The two are just completely different.

With the warning systems that are currently in use in the States, there would be ample time to get the hell out of the water and hug a tree. Maybe even get to higher ground or at least shelter yourself some from the gigantic waves. Even minutes matter.

We have warning systems for tsunamis?
I mean, I'm sure they can be observed, but the thing I keep hearing during all this is that there's really no effective way to prevent one or effectively get a massive number of people out of one's way since they happen so quickly.

I came to find out on Saturday that my cousin was in that concert fire. She is really shook up and traumatized over it. She mentioned that she has bruises all over her body and that during the stampeding, the only air to beathe was the black smoke, causing people to collaspe and then be trampled to death. Also, she mentioned that as soon as somebody went down, they stayed down forever..
My famly found her and her friends a day later in a Hospital after getting a call from them...

well the tsunamis hit 2 hours after the quakes so i guess his arguement is that's 2 hours to get the hell out of dodge...certainly couldnt save everyone but maybe women and children could've been hauled out

I saw a report on MSNBC that gave a minute by minute account of what happened with the tsunami. Basically, most of the tsunami warning systems in the world exist in the Pacific ocean, because of the so-called "Ring of Fire." One doesn't exist in the Indian Ocean on a large scale as needed, because so few tsunamis have occured there in the past several hundred years.

Argentine Club Owner Charged in Fatal Fire
Mon Jan 31, 7:14 PM
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The owner of a Buenos Aires nightclub where a fire killed 192 people was indicted Monday on involuntary manslaughter charges in the country's worst fire disaster in decades.
The indictment of Omar Chaban in the Dec. 30 fire came as authorities investigated reports that emergency exits were locked during the rock concert to prevent people from entering without paying.
Chaban, who has been in police custody since the fire, could face a prison sentence of eight to 25 years if convicted of the charges against him. The judge who filed charges against Chaban also ordered a $19 million lien on his assets on Monday.
Authorities are also investigating whether someone in the crowd set off a flare that ignited lining on the club's ceiling, unleashing dense smoke that killed many of the victims.
Reeling from thick smoke, panicked crowds surged toward the doors, trampling each other in desperate efforts to flee.
Although the club had a reported capacity of 1,500, authorities said they were looking into accounts that 4,000 people were in the club at the time of the fire.
City legislators are investigating accusations of lax public safety inspections at nightclubs.
