I just picked up Astonishing X-Men by Whedon and Cassaday. I have to say it's some of the strongest X-men i've read in a long time.

identity crisis was cool, the last three issues of the flash tie-in was good too ...
the gl re-birth was interesting, but i don't know too much of the back story to fully get it ... but the shot of yankee stadium in the first issue was amazing ...
the jsa/jla crossover seems promising ...
i really enjoyed X4, the x-men/fantastic 4 team-up ...
the question and space ghost mini-series are pretty cool ...
the jla run of #101-107 was pretty interesting too ...
i just started reading comics, and really only read DC, so my perspective might a bit askewed ...

I was sort of Blah about the whole Identity crisis series, there wasnt enough motive for me, it just seemed like the killer could have had other options then going the route they did, that being said the other stuff has me excited the ramafacations of the mindwiping and the new capt. boomerang and dr light stuff should be good

Does the Boondocks count? I just started rereading them and it looks like Aaron McGruder has gone back to writing stories. Even going so far as bringing back Jazmine. It's as funny as it was when it first started. I loved the Bush bashing, but it felt like a one note joke after a while.

Last thing I read was Dreamwave's Transformers G1 series. The artwork is spectacular, and the story is great for old school TF geeks like me. Biggest problem is actually Finding the damn things at small comic shops. It's been a few months since I picked one up.

I just got the 3rd Planetary trade hardcover off Amazon, I didn't read it yet though. I'm waiting for the Identity Crisis to come out as a trade and then I'll pick it up.
About 5 years ago I used to buy everything off the rack, unfortunately I don't have the time or money anymore, it sucks especially now, comics have gotten progressively better. I still keep up thru Wizard though.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, I read the majority of the mainstream comics today (which includes most of what is published by DC, Marvel, and Devil's Due - and SOME of the stuff put forth by Image).
Best regular universe DC comic: Gotham Central. Best Batbook by FAR.
Best Marvel comic currently published: Tough one to call, since a lot of Marvel comics are "good" but not great......I'd go with Daredevil and Punisher.
For those who haven't picked them up yet, I suggest taking a look at Devil Due's new "Aftermath" line of comics: Defex, Infantry, Breakdown. I've read the first few issues and the books seem off to a good start.

Identity Crisis was six issues of pretty decent storytelling leading up to an INCREDIBLY LAME and totally disappointing seventh issue finale. Meltzer pulled a Loeb on us. What's even more infuriating is that, though the series set up some cool stuff for the future, that was ultimately it's main problem - the miniseries itself does little more than set things up for ANOTHER "crisis" storyline in the DC universe, which means that the consumer has just spend around 20 bucks for a series that was nothing more than a setup for ANOTHER series.
I'm very, very wary of Green Lantern: Rebirth, because it looks as if they're going to retcon GL to totally absolve Hal Jordan of all guilt, and that is something I'm very much NOT in favor of.
I've been sorely disappointed in the latest "major" event storylines in the big two publishers, especially after how amazingly abysmal and completely fucked up Bendis' "Avengers Disassembled" storyline was.

I mostly read trade paperbacks these days.
Astonishing X-Men was excellent.
I thought Identity Crisis was great, and unlike a Loeb story, the ending didn't seem contrived. The murderer had just kinda lost it, and it all made sense in the murderer's mind. And the story exists in an ongoing universe, so the fact that the ending left it open to other stories within the universe was fine by me.
Powers is another great title.
The Eseential Tomb of Dracula books were great reprints of old stories by Wolfman and Wein.
And I pick up all the "Ultimate" hardcovers. I really like their original takes on Spidey, the X-Men, and the Ultimates.
There are others I've read or have sitting waiting to be read as well...

wish morrison were writing marvel characters. Obviously you missed quite a bit of his X-Men run. It starts good, but you know he loses interest in writing it halfway through.

Whatever his flaws, Morrison's run on X-Men was the best that book, or team, has seen in YEARS.
It's a shame that the Marvel editors / administrative staff have seen fit to screw it up by either eliminating the good stuff that he did (i.e. allowing Claremont to pursue his little vendetta and retcon most of Morrison's work) or keeping some of the good stuff long, long after it should be kept around so now, like rotten lunch meat, it just stinks (i.e. the unholy mess that is Xorn).

Best regular universe DC comic: Gotham Central. Best Batbook by FAR.
Great, great book.
It's co-written by two of the best writers out there, Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka. Rucka writes a series called Queen & Country for Oni Press about British special ops, and it just might be my favorite comic overall right now.
At this point, I only read trades, but I made exceptions for Identity Crisis and Bendis' Avengers stuff. The former was pretty enjoyable, but hardly the Earth-shaking movement it was made up to be. The latter...well, up until now, Bendis had done no wrong, but this was just sad. Sensational violence just for the sake of a "shocking" death toll. That said, his proposed team line-up looks interesting as fuck, and I definitely wanna read what he does with it.
Se7en, good call with the Morrison X-Men run. It makes me wish he did more mainstream stuff...though The Filth is phenomenal.
Brian Azzarello is a good one to read...100 Bullets is easily the best Vertigo title outside of Hellblazer and Lucifer.
The re-vamped X-Force that Mike Allred drew was really fucked up and fun, and I reccomend it to anyone looking for a new book.
Am I the only one here who reads the sappy "indie" comics that Oni Press, Slave Labor Graphics and Kitchen Sink specialize in?

I'll buy anything from Jhonen Vasquez. Love Courtney Crumrin. Blue Monday is excellent.
I'm sure I read/have read others, but those were the first to come to mind.
