I liked last night's episode, but I'm getting concerned about the Corn Factor. That whole thing correlating Hoshi's fear with her pet Sluggo, and the ending- "I think she'll be just fine now" - GAG. Weak.

I think the concept of a raw, primitive space journey is really brilliant (they can do a lot with that if they try), and Scott Bakula as Captain is great casting. Just no more corn, please!!

Did they even mention that slug pet of hers in the first one .. .. it seemed to me they just jumped into the show with this slug and assumed everyone knew it was her pet. They kept on complaining about first contact, I thought it was the slug, but then again, they just came from a planet where they saw alien strippers sucking up butterflies. First contact is over.
And the thing with that linguist .. .. when she first learned how to say DISTRESS in their language, she just said "DISTRESS" into her little computer. Dump her and keep that computer. And it's amazing how the computer that can do everything else couldn't figure out how to say anything, but she did it with no problem in a split second, and to the point as well. They guy knew where to shoot immediately, and disabled the ship right away. That was just one guy with a small ship. Why couldn't the 15 dead people with the other ship have blown up that ship with relative ease before they were sucked dry of their lumph node juice or whatever the hell it was.
I still can;t wait for the next one though. I like it.

The, I like the show too.

No more corny similies of Linguists and Slugs and I'll be quite pleased.
I think Hoshi communicating directly with the Alien Race was actually very good-pointing out that at that time in Space Exploration, direct communication (AND cojones) outshone working with not then perfected Computers when things were as primitive as they are on the show. Though yes, it WAS corny, I liked it.
I'm giving it more time before giving up on it, damnit! It's the new Star Trek and it had BETTER ROCK!!!

You guys are absolutely right about that slug. I managed to supress it, becuase overall I liked the episode (and want to really like the series).

They should have put a scrolling sign on the bottom of the screen to the effect of "SEE HOW THIS PERSON RESOLVED HER ISSUE OF ADAPTING TO NEW ENVIRONMENTS? SEE THE SLUG? SEE HOW IT'S IN A NEW ENVIRONMENT? SHE HOW SHE SAYS IT WILL BE OK, BECAUSE I ADAPTED. CAN WE MAKE THE ANALOGY MORE SIMPLE?

ARRGGHHH!
