Most neighborhoods had Mister Softee, but some neighborhoods had the non-franchised truck, like in mine we had 2: the blue sky bar truck & the ding dong cart (my personal fave)he used to stop right outside my house cause there were the most kids there.
Who did you all have?

I had the Good Humor man. Toasted Almond, Chocolate Eclair, Candy Crunch Center, Strawberry Shortcake, etc. All the classics.

One summer, a good friend of mine got a job as the Good Humor man while on break from college. He used to stock the truck with beer and come by where we were all hanging out. What a great summer that was!

Good Humour
&
Circus Man

Also, I don't know how common this was for anyone else, but we use to have the guy drive around in the truck who would sharpen knives. He would ring his bell like he was the Ice cream man, and us little kids would run out to find this shmuck. We use to throw rocks at him as he drove down the street.

Nothing beats Mr. Softee. Even diabetics are willing to give up a leg to get a tasty Double Twirl Cherry Crunch Cone.

Mr Softee was key.
I remember seeing a fake one one time.
The truck was red and even had that same ice cream cone face guy but it was called something different.
Dirty bastards !!
I did have the knife guy too.
We also had this guy who had The Whip.
Its that ride at the amusement park where you just go around and it " whips " around the corners. Well they had a truck that had a mini version.
They guy that drove it was such a prick.
This old italian guy.
He was clearly not a people person.

I have balls !!!

In Bay Ridge, we had them all.
Sadly, a few of the ice cream guys were pedophiles. One guy called himself "Uncle Don", and he would give out freebies and invite kids to his house for parties. He got busted for kid touching.
As for "Mr. Softee",hearing that theme song will always bring back memories.

Mr. Softee was definitely the best.
Bungalo bars were before my time, I think they were in our town in the 60's. We had Good Humor which were ok. Then the independents with all of the variety of ice cream and candy.
We had a knife sharpening guy. he would come around once a month.
For a while we had a donut guy and a truck that sold dairy products and bread kinda like a 7-11 on wheels It lasted a summer back in the mid 70's/

the ding dong cart

hhhmmmmm....I'm pretty sure I wouldn't let my kid within 50 feet of any vehicle with the words "dong" or "ding" on it.

The truck in my town was the chocolate covered cock cart...

I used to drive a Blue Sky Bar truck, then I drove a Mister Softee truck for a while. I used to go to businesses in addition to neighborhoods. The Mister Softee truck owner took the truck out and did my route one day, and at one of my stops he yelled at the guys because they wouldn't buy anything. The next day when I pulled up, the guys hesitated before coming over to the truck, and then one of them said, "Mister Softee yelled at us."

Great, now I'm starvin'!

In my neighborhood the Ice
Cream Man would speed up just
to get the kids to run after
the truck. Sadistic bastard!

Knife sharpening trucks? I thought they went extinct following the depression in the 1930's!

Now a plastic "silverware" truck dispenser I could see...

When I was living in Weehawken a few years ago we had the "Demented Ice Cream Truck". The music was off key and would speed up and slow down randomly, sounding just like something out of a creepy movie. It was such the strangest feeling to be having a pleasant summer afternoon and all of a sudden get the chills because the demented ice cream was in town. Who knows what was going on in the back of that truck.

And I have no preference. Mr. Softee is good except for the unfortunate name.

Mr. Softee was the best.
Chocolate & vanilla swirl.
I still see trucks in the neighborhood, but heard they are all selling drugs instead of icecream.

we also had the knife truck. but did anyone else have the potato chip truck? they would come around every week and refil this huge tin.

ICG - i want a snow cone.
