That's so unbelievably fucked up.

Man, talk about shitty club security...

Any word as to which other member of the band was killed?

Just awful. Truly awful. Dimebag rocked.

Metal messageboards from the show are saying it was indeed Vinnie Paul who was killed.

From another post I saw on FARK -

This is bad for metal in several ways:

1) Bad reputation increasesgo to metal shows and get shot.
2) Insane concert security with intrusive searches and fans not allowed near the stage.
3) Bands are scared of touring America.
4) Pantera gets the Nirvana treatment.

This MSNBC article has the most info by far at this point...

Witness makes it sound like the guy was after Dimebag. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6683479/)

The witness, 22-year-old Chris Couch, said the shooting occurred about 30 seconds after Damageplan, had begun playing. Couch, who was standing about 30 feet away from the stage, noticed a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and hockey jersey walk up to the stage, followed by a bouncer and another club employee.

The man in the jersey climbed onto the stage, started yelling and shot the guitarist five or six times at close range, Couch said. Couch said the gunman also shot a bouncer who pulled him off the musician.

WYSP here in Philly was just playing Walk and the On-Air DJ's just came on and said it was Dimebag and his brother Vinnie who were shot. This is really surreal and of course MTV doesn't have anything on as of yet. Damn, I'm shaking a bit. Fuckin' A.

Is it true that Dimebag and Vinny are brothers? If that's the case, then chances are Vinny's NOT dead... just because the police don't confirm deaths until next of kin are notified, and if Dimebag and Vinny are related, then the kin would have known in Vinny's case as well...

None of the three major music channels have anything on...and doubt they will until tomorrow, and even then it'll just be a 30-second "news" report during a commercial break.

Weak.

Even though Damageplan weren't huge, PanterA is pretty legendary, and an incident like this is pretty serious for ALL music genres...

It's unreal how this guy can not only get into the venue with a gun, but was able to get on stage, shoot Dimebag 6 times, then turn on the other band members and the crowd.

I been to many concerts, the majority being PanterA shows, and couldnt get into the venue with a pack of cigarettes without security openning the lid to check inside.

I'm still in shock. I was hoping all morning that it was a fake story. I didnt want to believe it. I still dont.

The moon in silver trees

light of the night
The earth, a purple blaze

While down below the trees
bathed in cool breeze
silver starlight breaks down the night
And so we pass on by the crimson eye

Perhaps the best of his generation on the ax. The 8th has been strawberry fields and John Lennon for 20 years. The irony is sickening. Another gun death of a legend. Once on the daily show i saw Senator Mcain and he was asked where we are as a nation. He said these were bad times for America. His honesty has stayed with me. I'd probably say something like: I am the eggman. I am the eggman! I am the Walrus! Coo Coo Cachoo!

It's no secret that the Columbine kids were fans of Hitler, so no, that wasn't a coincidence, but it wasn't a cosmic intervention, either.

My husband is a big fan of Pantera and this is very hard for him, we went to go see the Damageplan concert in the city when they did the headbangers ball concert.

As for Vinny Paul according to damageplan.net, he was not killed.

"There are reports on various news organizations that Vinnie is dead, they are all not true. Dime is the only one of the band members who got shot."

I send my support to all of you and if you need to talk Bobby, we are here for you.

I do not think showing the video tape is a good idea, people are so hurt right now that the videotape would drive them to rage.

My heart goes out to Vinnie, to their families, to the other band members, and to the families and friends of the other people that were killed or injured, in this fucking senseless act of selfishness and stupidity.
In 1985 I was fortunate enough to meet both Darrell and his brother in Dallas on tour. The first thing me and my friend did as soon as that tour was over, was to head straight back to Dallas and hang out with Darrell and Vinnie for a long time, cuz they were the coolest muther fuckers that we had met after criss-crossing the states for three months. That was the beginning of a friendship that was anchored in love, respect, fun, outrageousness, music, booze, sweat, late nights, early mornings, hangovers, headaches, pounding eardrums, sore bodies... the list goes on.

There's a tendency in these fucked up moments to use the word "I" a lot and focus on one's own feelings of pity and shock... so instead let it just be known that thru these eyes Darrell was incredibly warm, open, fun, nutty, forthcoming, talented, embracing, unpretentious, accommodating and he always had a very attractive innocence about him that obviously made him never threatening and always welcoming.

Darrell and his brother were the cornerstone of musical adventures that were always groundbreaking, pushing boundaries, challenging to themselves and to their fans, respected by their peers and always true musicians' musicians, and today the rock world is worse off because of this untimely and senseless waste.

Much love and respect and thanks for letting me be a small part of your life and I know you are already having fun and throwing it down with Bon Scott, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jimi, Cliff B., and the rest of the musicians and troublemakers that you are hanging with so prematurely.

Just thinking of that lethal combonation of Dimebag and Cliff rocking out.

It is just so surreal the whole thing as I could not get the horrific images out of my head. Trying to think of what happened. It doesn't really screw me up it just makes me think. Makes me think about how in a fucking blink of an eye, someone who is close or once was close could be gone. Makes me think how there are so many of us out there and so many people who have petty shit going on with one another that may cause schizm and I wonder how often we think of the one we have a rift with we may never see again because of unforseen events. I have people like that in my life who I have pissed off or have had broken ties with and although we don't speak no more, I still care quite a bit and just want to pick up the phone and say "Hey bro, I hope you're well", even though there may be a fuck you or a hang up on the other end.

Not trying to be overly deep but I just think about this shit sometimes. Time here is so short.

This is an upsetting turn of events.
I wasn't at all a fan of Pantera music specifically but, I am a fan of other heavy bands.
This tragedy is going to re-inforce the notion that Metal (and it's fans) is for "devil worshipers" or, at the very least, "dirtbags".

Sure, it's been a while since Right-wingers blamed Manson and/or Ozzy for violence but, THIS event will probably wake up a lot of sleeping giants.

Sucks.
Sucks for Dimes family, friends, and fans.
Sucks for fans of the genre that have to deal with the aftermath.

Planet Caravan

We sail through endless skies
Stars shine like eyes
The black night sighs
The moon in silver trees
Falls down in tears
Light of the night
The earth, a purple blaze
Of sapphire haze
In orbit always

While down below the trees
Bathed in cool breeze
Silver starlight breaks down the night
And so we pass on by the crimson eye
Of great God mars
As we travel the universe

God's ultimate heavy metal band just got it's lead guitarist. RIP Darrell Abbot. AKA Diamond Darrell AKA Dimebag Darrell

What kind of asshole does this? hops on stage and shoots a man 5 times in the chest? then shoots into a crowd of people? WHAT THE FUCK!!! he was one of my musical idols, and i hope an out pouring goes out for him like it did for Cobain.

Dimebag didn't choose to lose his life, some dickhead with a gun ended it for him. there was no hatred of life, there was no end in sight for the man (all specualtation, i did not know the man, or even pretend to) but from interviews i've read, heard or seen the only thing the guy wanted to do was make music and have fun.
so in honor of Dimebag Darrell Blast any project he's worked on (Pantera, Damage Plan) Kiss, or Sabbath (his favorite bands) so loud he can hear it in heaven.

not to compare deaths of rockstars, but this is the man who should be put on a pedestal, not the guy who kills himself through his own self destructive methods, (drugs, guns) I hope pantera, damage plan make millions off new record fans, just so that Dimebags name lives on forever, and his family (i don't know if he has kids or not) can be taken care of for the rest of there lives.

Excellent point.

While all death is tragic it stings a little more when the good guys who are always having a positive effect go. I am sad when a rock star takes their own life due to a suicide or drugs or whatever self-inflicting damage he/she causes themself but it is really hard for me to give them any kind of pity. You have the world in your hands so to speak and your slowly killing yourslef? I don't get it. Man I would take that ball and run with it and try to bring others out of the shit they are in instead of driving people into more of a fuckdom.

Nice job by security at the show. 1st guy gets in with gun, then guy in hooded sweeatshirt strolls up to the stage w/ a gun, then jumps on stage and has time to bitch about the Pantera breakup WITH THE GUN, then has time to blast 4 people WITH THE GUN.

Damn. It takes one rotten apple to spoil....other apples.

You can't blame the security at the venue.
Not every venue has metal detectors and I dont expect the staff to pat down every inch of every person that walks through the door. I mean... it's a rock club not an airport.
We've all seen it a million times: a fan jumps on stage, makes a stupid face, and then dives into the crowd. No harm there.
Hell...I was just a Hall and Oates concert and some fat lady in her 40ies rushed onstage to hand Darryl a teddy bear!
People can bypass security. It's just not that hard.

My point is:
It's a rock concert! The fans are granted a certain level of freedom and accessibility.
To say that "this incident could've been prevented" is proving that hindsight is 20/20.

The thing with the venue you have to remember is it's Ohio, so it's a bit of a different mindset.

Down here in DC, security varies widely from club to club. Nation you can't get in without them patting you down, and even checking your cigarettes like Pantera said. The 9:30 club, where Damage Plan played/was going to play on this tour, they don't give you a second glance, they are more worried about your age.

On top of all that, some shows let you stage dive. It's pretty much up to the band and the club--Black Cat is a no, the Ottobar in Baltimore it's pretty hard to stop it, even if they tried. I don't know if Damageplan is a stage-dive friendly band, but i'm going to guess that it happens from time to time.

I went to a Down concert in Ohio (I believe it was Phil Amselmo's band way back in the early/mid '90s)

First, someone got stabbed during the opening band.

Second, I literally got my entire shirt ripped off of me in the crowd and the guys that did it followed me around until I went to security. Security didn't do shit and I ended up having to buy a $30 T-shirt so I wouldn't have to walk around topless all night.

Third, glass bottles were being thrown on the stage during the whole show and shattering everywhere.

I saw Pantera a few times in NYC and the security was really really tight. They went through everything, pockets, purse, they even opened up one of my makeup compacts to make sure there was nothing inside of it. No glass bottles inside the venue, drinks were sold in plastic cups.

I hate Ohio.

Dude, how could you even stage dive at the Black Cat in the first place? The stage is, what, a foot off the ground?

And you're right about the 9:30 Club on MOST nights...but they do switch up the security depending on the type of act. I've never seen metal detectors, but I've seen plenty of pat-downs and searches at the hip-hop shows I've been to there. I've never seen a metal show there, but I wouldn't be suprised if they did the same thing, since at this point in the club's history, it's more of an "indie" club, and their typical acts don't usually attract an audience that ISN'T a bunch of hipster pussies.

well Kane would have an excuse.. the mystery of his parents murder, but then realizing paul bearer is his real dad. his on again/off again relationship with his brother the undertaker. his impotence problem with tori, then xpac stealing her from him. being a one day only world champion, having to use that damn voice box to talk back in the day. having DX call him the "big red retard" on a daily basis, losing his mask in public and the humility of having to show his face every monday night. and let's not forget Katie Vick...

The Columbus Dispatch wrote:
Mitch Carpenter, an Alrosa security guard working in the parking lot, said he encountered Gale before the concert and asked him to "park his car and buy a ticket or leave." Gale parked behind the building near the band's bus and was asked to move his car, which he did. The next time Carpenter saw Gale, he was in the club. "He had hopped the fence at the patio," Carpenter said. "He was walking really fast toward the stage and I followed him. "I thought he was going to get up there and stage dive or something during the first song. I figured he was just a guy who didn't have any money to buy a ticket so he got in the way he did. Columbus, Ohio's NBC 4 is reporting that police have video from inside the Alrosa Villa club that captures the entire shooting incident Wednesday that resulted in the death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and four others. Meanwhile, NBC 4 has posted a brand-new video report featuring an interview with a Central Ohio man by the name of Travis Burnett, who claims that he tried to get the gun away from Dimebag's suspected killer, Nathan Gale, before Gale fired at him, grazing Burnett's arm. Also featured in the report is an interview with Gale's former employer, Rich Cencula, the owner of Minit Lube in Marysville, who said that he considered Gale "like a son" and who described the shooter as "a very good worker." "I know by now you've all heard this bullshit [about Dimebag being shot to death]... It's sad as fuck. I can't even put into words the scope of the violence involved in this... A couple of my other friends were shot as well.

"The fucked up thing is that the shooter was apparently pissed 'cos PANTERA broke up... The goddamn irony of it all is (nothing was set in stone), but they were just starting to talk about doing some reunion shows and put all their petty differences aside.

"What a fuckin shame... I got tons a stories about how much fun we had whenever we hung w/ Dime, staying at his house, BBq'ing and generally getting blitzed, cuttin' up and talkin' trash... It's obvious to me why the family didn't want Phil there, even before this video.

The guy has had serious addiction problems for years now, and it's made his behavior and performances erratic at best, and downright dangerously insane at the worst.

I honestly don't think the "feud" made the family call him off...shit like that gets tossed out the window when something this horrible happens. They didn't want him because of shit like this video, which just shows off how messed up this guy is.

Phil needs help, and pronto.

I recently got my hands on some awesome PanterA cover tracks.

I found "Seek an Destroy" A bit muffled, but still worthy of listening to.

An excellent cover of "Paranoid"

and PanterA rockin' "Cat Scratch Fever"
This one in particular is a gem. Dimebag, not over-doing what Ted has done, but a complete homage to the Mad-Man.

Outstanding!!!

I currently cannot host these tunes, but if there is any interest, I will mail you a CD.
Unless someone can help me host, then they are free to all!!
