A damn good question (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=535&ncid=535&e=2&u=/ap/20041208/ap_on_re_mi_ea/rumsfeld_22)
Spc. Thomas Wilson had asked the defense secretary, "Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles?" Shouts of approval and applause arose from the estimated 2,300 soldiers who had assembled to see Rumsfeld.

He made the soldier "Can you repeat the question?" Then said something to the effect that Armies go into war with what they have, not what they should expect. What kind of stupid shit is that?
Remember people, this assfuck is KEEPING HIS JOB. Public school students are the only people held accountable in Bushworld.

this may be a small picture into how the soldiers feel as a whole
makes you wonder how morale is? the world is changing and there may come a time where a countries armed forces may tell the president to go fuck himself when they can see they've been put in harms way for political reasons or just plain bad choices

Well, it's obvious to me that Spc. Thomas Wilson hates freedom. :(
As usual, Slate has something interesting to say (http://slate.msn.com/id/2110818/)
I've given up most of my hope (but still retain a little glimmer) that one of these episodes will prove to be the straw that breaks the W's back. However, I still keep them in my (admittedly pitiful) little mental scrapbook of hate.

One of my best friends I worked in DC with is in Kuwait right now. He joined the army 6 months back, and in a week he's in Iraq. He works in the signal corps. I asked him how morale is, and he said the general concensus among his company is that they're all pissed off, and hate nation building. They want to go home. This isn't the reseves, by the way, this is active duty.

60 Minutes did a report a few weeks back about how our boys have to do exactly what Spc. Thomas Wilson talked about.
Hey Rummy, sure, you can have all the armor in the world on a tank and still get blown up (I'll even give you that ignorant remark) but guess what?
Every little bit helps our soliders. It could be the difference between a wound and death.
Still, after almost two years, unprepared.

In response to this event, Rummy gave the greatest quote of all time: "I don't know what the facts are but somebody's certainly going to sit down with him and find out what he knows that they may not know, and make sure he knows what they know that he may not know, and that's a good thing. I think it's a very constructive exchange,"

Rumsfeld then put on some music to lift the soldiers morale
"Disposable Heroes"-Metallica
Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all Victim of what said should be a servant `til I fall
Chorus:
Soldier boy, made of clay
now an empty shell
twenty one, only son
but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
just do as we say
finished here, Greeting Death
he's yours to take away
Back to the front
you will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
you will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
you coward
you servant
you blindman
Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you bare, glory seeker trends bodies fill the fields I see the slaughter never ends
[Chorus]
Why, Am I dying?
Kill, have no fear
Lie, live off lying
Hell, Hell is here
I was born for dying
Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
left to die with only friend Alone I clench my gun
Ow! Hey! Get that net offa me! Ouch! Help!! Somebody HELP!!!!

Rummy's whole philosophy is wrong. He came in wanting to revamp the military, make it light and fast. That's fine if you're just invading places, but once you're in control, you need heavy fuckin armor to lock that place down. I don't wanna see Humvee patrols, I want Abrams out there ready to tear shit up. There should be air support patroling transport routes. Fuck that, I wanna see Imperial Walkers out there!!
You have to build yourself up so big that no one is gonna to even think of fucking with you.

Just to cover all aspects of this story, it appears that the soldier that asked that question came up with it with the help of a reporter. I personally think it doesnt matter because most people have very, very short term memory.
Anyways the reporter only did that after being told that reporters would not be able to ask Rumsfield any questions. (Big suprise)
I'm sure some people will have a problem with this.
http://www.katu.com/stories/73310.html
I don't know why that would be a problem. The soldiers wouldn't have asked the questions if they weren't concerned. They aren't gullible lemmings, and these concerns have been around for a while.
EDIT: And, ironically, if the reporter was allowed to ask the questions himself, it wouldn't have had the impact of soldiers asking them. Rumsfeld shot himself in the foot.

Don't forget that the soliders all cheered when the question was asked. That in itself proves it was a bit of a concern.

I don't know why that would be a problem.
Well I figured that people with agendas would have a problem with it and big suprise Rush Limbaugh had a problem with it.
"He created news in order to cover it," said conservative political commentator Rush Limbaugh. "... We found out the whole thing ... is a setup."
Nice to see Rush Limbaugh has such a high opinion of the troops. He apparently thinks they are gullible lemmings who will obey the commands of a stranger.

Support the troops! (http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/columns/pressingissues_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=10007355 66)
Joe M. Richardson: "The duped soldier should be put at the very front of the action, no armor. The cooperating sergeant's career should be over and maybe become MIA. Pitts and all his cronies should be executed as traitors. We are fighting a war, the debate is over, you're either for us or against us, there is no middle ground. I say start executing the leftists in our country, soon."

Nah -- they can simply be tripped up by tying ropes around the legs.

Anyone who asks this kind of stuff is really gonna get screwed over, especially after this guy. Don't expect to see too much more of it.
