Also, "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" was a pretty good stand alone movie, in my opinion.

I loved the first Shrek and couldn't sit throught he secopnd one. So Shrek 2 makes the list. Mainly because I cannot stand Cameron Diaz character in the film. I can't even stand her.

I will also get Ye Holy Hell beaten out of me for it but I never have and never will understand all of the hub-bub with The Lord of the Rings films AND consequential sequels. I would sooner watch the double feature of Suburban Commando and Mr. Nanny than be put through of torture of seeing that Tolken garbage. I couldn't even get throught he borefest that was the books during high school. They made better paperweights and doorstops than literature. But hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

nah, the first shrek was a perfect film that didn't need to be revisited ... the jokes in the second one were too force and obvious ... and as much as i enjoy french saunders, she was less than stellar and was on the screen way too long ...

godfather, pt 2 was amazing ... but no where near the brilliance of the first part -- too much pf a downer to watch michael lose everything ...

they made a sequel to 'once were warriors' ... i've never seen it, i can just imagine how horrible it might be ...

and any of those direct-to-video disney sequels never work on anyone over four ...

But that's what makes II that much greater. He gains everything...absolute power...but is a man alone by the end. It's a ballsy film...far moreso than the first. Plus you've got the DeNiro stuff, and his Don Corleone is a thousand times better and more interesting and emotionally investing than Brando's, which was a caricature and clown act from day one.

Now I gotta turn my back on you.

And no WAY is II at all "boring." And I know I'm in the minority in not really liking Brando too much in the first film, but James Caan annoyed the piss out of me as well. I did not miss him at ALL in the second. He was a quiet baby...and that's how it should be! I cringed when he showed up again at the dinner scene at the end...

Plus II has tons of Fredo...James Cazale is one of my favorite actors of all time, so him getting so much more focus in II just automatically makes me like it more.

Guy only was in 5 movies before he died, and they were all best picture nominees..."Dog Day Afternoon," "The Deer Hunter," "The Conversation," and the two "Godfather" films. He died WAY too soon.

It's amazing how great both these films are and how excellent a Sequel can be! I can't believe how the guy who made them was still able to make crap like "Jack"

I agree about Brando, DeNiro and James Cazale. Brando was good, but not by the time he got into the role of Vito Coleone.

Part II has DeNiro and Pacino at the top of their games and tons of Fredo.

Mob stories should not be too upbeat and happy. They need to be downers.

Personally, I don't think any movie should "need" a sequel.

The Fellowship of the Ring needed a sequel, It ended with two hobbits on a moutain looking in the distance at Mordor still holding the Ring. :p
