I'm thinking about buying a large (100+ gigs) external hard drive just for holding raw video for a project I've been working on. Any recommendations/horror stories. Are there any things I should look out for? Any place that has good deals on these things?

Why get 100GB when you can get 1000GB? (http://store.surrealgraphics.com/la1tb1hadr.html?OVRAW=Terabyte&OVKEY=terabyte&OVMTC=standard)

I'm not familiar with them myself and I've wondered about them as well, though I've heard from numerous people to avoid Maxtor drives that they fail very often.

Two Maxtor 160 GB Externals = No problems so far and they run a lot of hours; they also have FireWire. Self-installed via plug and play with Win XP. CostCo price was $169 or something

One Western Digital 160 GB External = No problems, self-install too, a little faster then the Maxtors, but no Firewire.

Acom Data 100+ GB whatever [I guess these are all around 160GB, havent looked at each], again no problems.

BUT, dont trust me, coz I dont trust them, hence, four HDs, and hell I posted about the Terabyte server Months ago!

Back Up, and then Back up the Back Up. The files I have lost forever...

And why do I have so much porn? Thats what someone asked. Its 16 bit/44.1kHz uncompressed Wav Audio, which Begins at the fun rate of 1 MB/Second. You sure as fuck wont get 5,000 of Those song files on a 20GB iPod.

Concerning Backup and Windows

I go to 'My Documents' and make a new folder, and its for each months stuff. Docs, pics, MP3, no matter what, a copy of whatever is scattered all over my puters is in that Folder. First of each month, like last month, the Folder "A_MiscOct04" goes onto two external HDs. Then, I can delete shit not used. I put an "A_" in the beginning so its first alphabetically on the HDs so you dont have to go looking thru the other folders.

i just got one. I would say between 120 and 200GB is the sweet spot right now for price and performance.

Def. go with Firewire if you can. If not you need USB2.0. YOu can always get a PCI add-on card if you do not have these ports built into your computer.

Also mak sure it has an 8MB cache and is 7200RPM's.

You can get away with 5400 (its on a LITTLE cheaper and to me not worth it) if all you are doing is storing video on there. if you will be doing the editing on the drive, go 7200. If its for archive purposes 5400 will be OK.

If you need anything more you can PM me.

FIRE SATHER!!!!!!!

For 1000 dollars you can set up a 1TB(TerraByte) RAID drive inside your computer so you never loose any data.

That thing is shady becuase there is No such thing as a single 1000MB drive. SO it must be 4 250's put together. the problem is, if one fails you loose everything. the chance of this happening is much greater with the more drives you have. especially when they are close together due to heat issue's.
