I found this cool story on slashdot.com. Apparently the Russians had built and attempted to launch a battle station (with an unarmed laser) into orbit.

Thankfully those bothan spies got their hands on the plans...

what was the nature of the failure?
The site said it was supposed to turn itself around 180 degrees to position its laser, and a computer error apparently rotated it 360 degrees instead, and it boosted itself out into space.
