Yet as the atrocities multiplied, Arafat's political star rose. Partly this had to do with the European cravenness in the face of the implied threat; partly with the Left's secret love affair with the authentic man of violence.
Whatever the case, by 1980 Europe had recognized the PLO, with Arafat as its leader, as the "sole legitimate representative" of the Palestinian people. The U.S. held out for another decade, but eventually it caved in to international pressure under the first Bush administration.......

At this time we should at least recall that Arafat is the father of modern terrorism who pioneered the hijacking of airliners in the 1960's. Even before the 1967 Six-Day War, and at least three years before there were any so-called "occupied territories," Arafat had already established the PLO with its covenant declaring that the existence of Israel was null and void. At the time Gaza was `occupied' by Egypt, and the West Bank was `occupied' by Jordan, and no one complained or demanded a Palestinian state. So Arafat's original terror campaign against Israel could not have been over the "occupied territories" or their claimed need for a Palestinian state.
Let us not forget the multiple wars instigated by Arafat. He tried to conquer Jordan in 1970 and thousands were killed during "Black September." He began the bloody `civil war' inside Lebanon in the 1970's and over 100,000 Lebanese were slaughtered in his urban warfare, using civilians as human shields. He violated the Oslo Accords of 1973 requiring that all disputes be resolved by negotiation. Following a far-reaching peace offer by Israel in 2000 he responded by launching his murderous intifada war with use of brainwashed Arab youths as human homicide bombers.
Arafat's wars caused the deaths of many innocent Jews, Moslems, Christians and American citizens. There seem to be insufficient reminders of all the deaths and widespread suffering that this one man has inflicted. Are we seeing here collective amnesia and selective memory by the major media?

With Arafat dead, preceded by the deaths of the absolutely vile Edward Said, the "Blind Sheik" Omar Abdel Rahman, and a bunch of other Hammas leaders, it's not been a good couple years to be an evil, militant Palestinian terrorist.

Arafat at least had the decency to die at a normal age. That, and he seemed pretty consistent in his hatred of Jews, outside of the 1993 peace attempt, so his evil was more straightforward. Thurmond couldn't even die right, AND he secretly loved black people, thusly not only making him a racist, but a really shitty racist. He couldn't even manage to not be a hypocrite when it came to what made him such a famous shitbag in the first place.
That, and when Strom died, that was it. He was pretty useless at that point. With Arafat dying, it's all too likely more people will end up dead and suffering because of it since that area is such a clusterfuck to begin with. Just a tad more sobering than some wrinkly, freakishly-old faux-racist finally kicking the bucket.
But hey, if you're desperate for it...

I heard that he really died of AIDS but the people who knew that were trying to cover it up so he could remain a martyr to his supporters. I also heard he could have gotten it from being gay. (Which apparently people have been saying for awhile, kind of like the McGreevy thing.)
I have no real source for this information but I was interested if anyone else had heard these 'rumors'. My mom heard some middle eastern reporter on a news show who was the one who said the AIDS thing, but not the gay thing.

Yup. They've been flying around various sites and blogs on the "internets". One guy who has gone public with them in "mainstream" media is John Loftus, who appears on Fox News and WABC radio here in NY and who styles himself as somebody with solid connections in the "intel" community.
I'd rate it as a 50/50 possibility. There's always been plenty of conjecture and some real evidence that a lot of males in the Islamic world agree with Fez in his theory that "girls are ugly and stupid" and that a lot of young boys are buggered on the down-low. Apparently, this was rampant in Afghanistan under the Taliban and is still prevalent in places like Khandahar. On the other hand, homosexuality is a public disgrace in the Arab world so the rumors could be an attempt to discredit Arafat to his followers who weren't put off by the terrorist thing.
In any case, I hope he's enjoying hell.
