How come there is not a formal investigation into this? If 100 machines did the same thing, couldn't it have tipped the election?

I'm sure they will start an investigation to make sure that no other machines did this. But, even with the glitch, Bush did win that county.

My question is, if that one glitch gave Bush 4000 votes, and he won Ohio by 100,000, if 25 machines had the same glitch, it would impact the election, so why is there not a deeper investigation into this considering that Ohio was the deciding state in the election?

Huzzah!

I love good, old fashion hand wringing and doubting. Ohio was too close not to come under the collective hairy eye-ball.

I've already begun my boycot of Ohio. I hope Bobo doesn't object.

From Michael Moore: Once again we are reminded that the buckeye is a nut, and not just any old nut -- a poisonous nut.

There were votes ion machines in Philidelphia before voting began. all votes were for Kerry. Why isn't there an investigation on that? That's worse than a glitch.

http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/news/10078797.htm?1c

Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham today refuted reports that 2,000 votes had been "planted" on voting machines at several polling places.

Cathie Abookire, spokeswoman for Abraham, said poll workers misinterpreted numbers they found on voting machines before the polls opened. Abookire said the city's new electronic voting machines have two windows that display voting numbers - one that shows the total number of votes ever cast on the machine, the other that shows the number of votes cast today.

Some poll workers saw the number of prior votes from past elections on the machines and thought that meant votes had been planted.

"They misread the machines," Abookire said. "There were no planted votes."

The confusion was created by a Web site, the Drudge Report, which reported that before voting began in Philadelphia, poll watchers found nearly 2000 votes planted on machines at four polling places - 2601 N. 11th St., 1901 W. Girard Ave., 122 W. Erie Ave. and 5657 Chew Ave.

Ed Kirlin, a volunteer with the Democratic Party, said whoever had given the information to Drudge looked at the wrong numbers on the voting machines.

"I think it's an attempt at misinformation," said Kirlin. "They didn't go to any party officials. They went right to the Drudge Report."

That Philadelphia story was debunked before election day was over. Republican poll watchers looked at vote counters on the machines before the polls opened and thought that votes had already been cast. However, according to election officials, the counters they saw counted every vote ever counted on the machine, and that the votes cast were from tests conducted on the machines and were not going to be counted in Tuesday's election. I tried finding a news article about it, but I can't find any. The only one I found close was that Republicans stopped the counting of 12,000 absentee ballots becuase they were not allowed to challenge them.

EDIT:I guess other people are better at finding articles than I am.

Well, unless there were more than 3.5 million votes that were "planted" or otherwise faked. Then what does it matter? I'm very sure W still had more real votes.

Regardless of whether or not Kerry would win if he got Ohio, shouldn't this be investigated more deeply?! 4,000 extra votes for Bush already on the machine? I just read an article on this saying that those machines basically run Windows with a MS Access database. Massively hackable to say the least.

Well, unless there were more than 3.5 million votes that were "planted" or otherwise faked. Then what does it matter?

If kerry got 150,000 extra votes in Ohio he would have 272 electoral votes, which would be a win.

Can we stop this. KERRY LOST BY over 3.6 million votes. The Democrats had a bigger army (of lawyers) than the US has in Iraq ready to file lawsuits. Kerry lost by 136000 votes with less than 150000 to count. So do you think he would have gotten 90% of the vote. This elecdtion was not close. It was a blowout.

First of all, that has nothing to do with possible voter fraud. Second of all, the popular vote wasn't relevant in 2000, was it? I didn't see any Republicans bowing to the popular vote then. The electoral system is stupid, and I doubt Republicans will learn from winning the popular vote by 3.5 million votes and still being 130,000 votes away from losing the election. And don't fool yourself; Republicans had just as big an army of lawyers as the Democrats and were filing lawsuits before and during election day.

I know they both had an army of lawyers. Kerry knew it was a hopeless fight. I watched Buill Maher on HBO and that untalented ugly cunt Susan Sarandon said the main reason the Democrats lost was because of voter fraud. Even Bill Maher who hates Bush disagreed with her. There was no way he was going to win unless Kerry pretty much got every remaining vote left. It was a hopeless fight.

And Gore what won by 500K votes right and lost the electoral college. Bush won the popular vote by 3.5-3.6 million votes and dominated the elctoral college with 286 votes. This was not a close election. The democrats won the northeast and california. That is pretty much it.

I'm so sick of the constant "It's over, get over it."

The entirety of Bush's presidency has gone unchecked because every fucked up thing he's done, whenever questioned, is dismissed because "it's over, get over it."

He stole Florida in 2000, get over it. Let's just move on. His adminstration ignored the terrorist threats for 9 months. Forget it, let's just focus on the future. He feeds us a shitload of halftruths to wage a war. Well, let's just forget that because we have to clean it up. His economic policies have us at a 400 billion deficit, well we should just get over it and look towards the future. His environmental policies are shit, let's forget it because the environment can wait for someone else to fix it.

I'm sick of getting over Bush, but better put, I'm sick of his fucking administration getting over on us.

Let's not get over shit and let's start holding these assholes accountable for their so called fuck ups or planned abuses of our country.

i don't mind who is president, as long as congress is different, (party wise) but continuing to have a republican pres, and congress, frightens me. to me it seems like the great ideas of a Republican get passed, and then the not-really-that-good plans all get passed as well, if only because of party lines. and god forbid we have a judicial branch that is same as the other two.
it works the same for the Dems too, but if the free world is controlled by one general view of the world, and there is no one to fight for the other way, the other way is screwed.

the only thing that truly bothers me about Bush being president again is, that in the first election he was trying to give the point of view that he was more middle of the road than he truly is.

now the only solution is when you have a problem call your represantive in the house, and senate members, and tell them you will vote against them ,and grab some of your friends to do the same, and live up to it.

And I'm Anti-Bush, BTW I hate to defend him.

I don't mind an investigation, but legally, since Kerry conceded to W2 can it be reversed?

If an investigation shows that W's team tampered with the vote to sway the election, then perhaps he should be taken out of office, but it has to be a very direct connection.

I don't believe concessions are legally binding contracts. It's basically the loser saying that he concedes the election, but the votes still need to be counted, and be correct.

I could be wrong though, I'm not looking at any legal textbook here. But it's 99.99% likely that nothing will come of this and Bush will serve his second term.

It was the smallest percentage of victory by an incumbent president in the history of America!! Yeah! I'd sure call that a blowout! I'd also like to call the following events blowouts:

-Giants over the Bills in Super Bowl XXV

-Frasier over Ali in Ali-Frasier I

-Twins over the Braves in '91 World Series

51 to 48 is a Blowout?!?!

These are the same people calling W2 the most "popular president ever", since he had more popular votes than any other president. The problem is, Kerry got more popular votes that just about any other canidate as well. I think Kerry's vote count beat Reagan in 1984 which was the highest before W2.

The election was close, but not TOO CLOSE like 2000. W2 won but can't just accept it, he calls his win a "Mandate"

Wouldn't it serve us all to make sure that we investigate this, and any other discrepancies and find solutions so that they do not occur in the future? What good does it serve us as a nation to get over elections that are flawed and possibly do not reflect what people wanted?

Why can't we get fucking paper records of our votes into electronic machines? Alkey works for Diebold. Funny enough, they manage to make ATMs that provide a paper record for every monetary transaction that is performed, and not only to dispense to the customer but also for the branch files.

Is it too much to ask that the same courtesy/safeguards are put in place for the electoral process?

www.votergate.com. There's a short film about how a GRANDMOTHER figured out how to hack onto the voting machines from her home computer. We need to fix these machines now.

And yeah-Bush may have stolen the election-again.

Bush did not steal the election

It was given to him on a silver platter, by Walden O'Dell, CEO of Diebold, Inc, the makers of the questionable touch-screen machines, and A staunch supporter for the republican party and George W Bush (http://www.diebold.com/whatsnews/inthenews/executive.htm)

as for the notion of "It's over, get over it?"

yes, Democracy is certainly over. The corporations officially run this country and all our lives....

That the CEO of the company that programmed the voting machines is a partisan Bush Supporter

I only used Diebold's site so I couldn't be accused of linking some "liberal" site as backup.

The rest will have to come out in the courts, then again, this administration doesn't want us to have access to lawyers anymore, so it'll probably be in the far, far future

Get over it my ass. Nobody is saying that the election should be overturned or that we should overthrow George Bush because of this or anything like that. We're saying that the head of Diebold is on record as being in the tank for W, donated $200,000 to his campaign, and said that he was "Committed" to making sure that Bush won Ohio. Diebold made these voting machines, and these voting machines are NOT verifiable in ANY way and they can be programmed to do whatever the hell they want and we can never know. And then we see that Bush is getting 4000+ votes in a county where 600 people vote. If we DON'T look into this we're idiots.

We're not saying that Bush didn't win, or anything like that. We're saying that this should be looked into because if anything illegal was going on it should be stopped so that future elections would be fair. That's all. And I don't know why anyone would have a problem with that.

No, I'm not saying Walden O'Dell is the Joker, announcing his evil schemes on TV. When he said he was "Committed to delivering Ohio" to George Bush it was in an INTERNAL memo to the Reupblican Fund Raising Committee. This memo was obtained by a reporter for the Cleveland Plain-Dealer newspaper and published on August 28. This reporter has been jumping up and down about this since then, but nobody paid attention because nobody thinks that things like that can't happen here. But now it seems like maybe they can.

I don't think anyone has suggested than anything has been proven. I don't think anyone has lept from "point ! to point Z". I think all anyone is saying that there is some indication that there may have been some sort of problems with the machines.

That the president of Diebold said what he said indeed proves nothing. But if nothing else, it just makes it even more evident why at least some sort of inquiry ought to be made. However, you could argue that it is NOT like "anyone else throwing their support behind a candidate" because someone like say Sean Penn doesn't exactly have access to the voting machines that have no paper trail.

Maiden said the problem wasn't caught because it didn't affect the vote totals for candidates or issues -- only the turnout totals.

She explained that the flawed program incorrectly added the total of absentee ballots cast in a state House District to every community within the district that had an issue in Tuesday's election.

For example, the program accurately reported that 301 of the 558 registered voters in the small village of Woodmere showed up at the polls on Tuesday. The program also correctly reported the vote counts for president -- 258 cast ballots for John Kerry and 40 for George W. Bush -- and for the other candidates and issues.

But in calculating the turnout in Woodmere, the program incorrectly added all 8,553 absentee ballots from the entire state House District 8. The result was an impossible turnout of 8,854 voters or 1,587 percent.

But then there's this:

Researchers: Florida Vote Fishy (http://www.wired.com/news/evote/0,2645,65757,00.html?
tw=wn_1polihead)

Electronic voting machines in Florida may have awarded George W.
Bush up to 260,000 more votes than he should have received,
according to statistical analysis conducted by University of California,
Berkeley graduate students and a professor, who released a study on
Thursday.

Sociology professor Michael Hout, who chairs the university's graduate
Sociology and Demography group, said the chance for such a
discrepancy to occur was less than 1 in 1,000.
