View Full Version : 4,000 shoulder-fired missiles missing in Iraq

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 - American intelligence agencies have tripled their formal estimate of shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile systems believed to be at large worldwide, since determining that at least 4,000 of the weapons in Iraq's prewar arsenals cannot be accounted for, government officials said Friday.
Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said last fall that "no threat is more serious to aviation" than the shoulder-fired missiles, which can be bought on the black market for as little as $5,000, are about five feet long and weigh as little as 35 pounds. More than 40 aircraft have been struck by shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles since the 1970's, causing at least 24 crashes and more than 600 deaths worldwide, according to a State Department estimate. In Iraq, the missiles have been used in more than a dozen attacks on American planes and helicopters, including those taking off and landing at Baghdad's international airport.

You did't read the article.
A new government estimate says a total of 6,000 of the weapons may be outside the control of any government, up from a previous estimate of 2,000, American officials said.

What you don't read in a lot of these reactionary news articles is that many of these should-fired missiles are inoperative because much of the circuitry has degraded to a point the weapons can't be fired. Don't get me wrong - it's still scary that even one of these weapons may be still in shape to be used, but many of these weapons can only be used to hold up tents now.

They would have to find some way to get into our country and use them here. I don't know if that would be possible with our tight security at the borders
Plus our own National Guard pilots are attacking NJ anyway, Terrorists would have to get in line. (http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/Forum/87/Topic/42313/page/Lone_f_16_pilot_declares_war_on_the_NJEA.htm)

Well, sure some things are unavoidable. Accidental things that could kill you. But some things don't have to be. We elect people to do their job and keep us safe.
The people have spoken. I'll just look back 20-30 years from now when, as Ron mentioned on the air, History will look more favorably on Nixon than W. (Well, Arnold Schwarzennger already does!)
What would be cool is if W2 can turn things around and make that prediction NOT come true. But does anyone really believe he's going to change much?
People seem to like what he's doing, Well a little more than Half of this country, while Others (a little less than half of the country along with a huge percentage of the rest of the world) can't believe it.

I would have to agree with you on that. But just because I don't worry about it, doesn't mean I don't think about it on a daily basis. Like you said, not much we as individual citizens can do about it. I just hope GW takes the whole secure borders issue a little more seriously than he did in his first term.

see thats the problem. you still think about it. when im driving around at work, or walkin into a store, or playing video games, terrorism, missles, never cross my mind. why should they. if you dont think about it, and by some slim chance look up and a missle is coming, youre fucked.
if you do think about it, and look up and a missle is coming, guess what, youre still fucked.

Yerdaddy, this is Bush's fault... how?
Actually, I know that Yerdaddy didn't bring up Bush, but I'm curious to know how this has anything to do with the President.
Are you saying that he has to police the world better so these missles are no longer a threat?

It's not Bush fault. But it is his responsiblity to keep us safe.
The power of the executive branch is vested in the President, who also serves as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces
The Armed Forces are supposed to protect us.
So I could start naming people in the armed forces, but as I go up the ladder I end at W2

this is Bush's fault... how?
Bush led us into the war into Iraq in order to remove the threats
Saddam's weapons posed to us. Instead, numerous types of weapons
have disappeared from Iraq, many of which are likely in the hands of
terrorists and insurgents. If the idea is to invade and remove a
weapons threat, you should have an organized plan to do so once
you've taken over. It's clear that Bush's administration did not.

What 42nd-delay said. But also, I'm not campaigning against Bush anymore. The majority of voters wanted him and they got him. But I'm not going to stop pointing out security threats to this country regardless of who is or is not responsible for them. To not do that because it might hurt the president's popularity would be down right un-American.
That's why you're right, I didn't bring up Bush. I posted the story and people can make what they want of it. If you want to make that this is just Bush-bashing then bully for you. Me, I think this problem tripled the threat of a civilian aircraft being shot down, but I'm funny that way.

He was a threat, just not a nuclear threat. He was more like that annoying kid down the street who toliet papers your house every Halloween.

He didn't have WMDs, but he had conventional weapons and WMD materials. I don't think he posed a threat - Bush's rationale for the war was that he did, but by attacking him, we've managed to create a threat out of one that wasn't there.
In the last month and a half, we've had shoulder-fired missiles, explosives and nuclear material all reported as disappearing. What was the point of invading if inadequate attention is paid to making sure the weapons are secured?
