Cubs really don't have a "nemesis" team

i always thought the cubs and cardinals had a bit of a rivalry ...

Nah. Maybe a bit during the home run race a few years back...but it's nothing serious. I guess I'd have to pick the Reds more than anything else. The only time I've seen a decent amount of opposing team fans show up at Wrigley is when the Reds play there. Those people are loyal!

Too busy fighting themselves, no room for "external" enemies.

Decent signing. Ordonez would have been better but the Tigers seem insane enough to give him 55mil

Nice pick up.

Not spectacular...but it goes a long way in helping to fill up the outfield, and bringing some solid hitting.

Great sign for the Cubs. Burnitz hits for every team he plays for except the Mets. And even though he had a rough time here, he always came to play and gave 100%. He'll hit 30 bombs for the Cubbies and he's a good clubhouse guy. I'd rather have him than Sammy Sosa.

Also, regardless of how he's hitting, he's a top notch rightfielder with an absolute gun for an arm.

Mojo, he'll hit his 30 HR's for you. And strike out his 150 times. I hate players like that. Make contact you shmuck. You'll love the long balls but when there's a runner in scoring position and you're a run down with 1 or 2 outs, this guy will do nothing for you. Not move the runner, not shorten the swing for a single. Nope. It's either the 30 HR or the 150 SO. Guess which one you'll see alot more of.

Great, sounds just like Sosa...

Nah, I think he'll do alright, and like Tool said, he's a fantastic fielder, FAR better than Sammy ever was out there.

And Sammy as the greatest Cub of all time?!? What, was Ernie Banks wiped from existence?!? This shit is ridiculous...and an insult to players like Banks, Billy Williams, Sandberg...horseshit.

I think it was a pretty damn good move.

He basicly avg 254 31 96 avg is bad but when you put into it that his on base is 351 thats fantastic for a guy whos avg is 254 and his slugging is 492 and ops 842. Not to shabby

Amen. And thats if HEALTHY. But it's not guarenteed, so its like an NFL deal. That knee acts up and they don't pay a dime.
So the deal is worth anywhere from $0 to $75 million

Dont let a 100 mph fastball fool you. There are guys that throw that hard who cant get anyone out (Jose Mesa/Scott Proctor, etc) Then there are guys that throw 93-95 who've been unhittable (Mariano Rivera). Its more about movement, especially LATE movement. Hitters will tell you they can time ANY fastball if it doesn't do much.

When Farnsworth was on, he's be devastating. He'd come in in the 8th or 9th and just shut down 3-6 batters in a row. But games like that were too rare. More often he'd completely fuck up and allow multiple runs. There was no middle ground with him...he was either phenomenal or a disaster.

He's 17th all time. He has had 4 or 5 good years. One was dominant: 46 saves 1.13 era in '95 for the Indians.

Wow, wrong on every point. He's 38. 17th all time in Saves. He's actually been BETTER in recent years. Started out as a mediocre starter. He was an unhittable closer in 95, good in 96, then awful for the next 4 years. In 2001 he regained his form and has been good since.

Except of course 2003, when he went 5-7 with 24 saves and a 6.52 ERA which is why not a single team wanted any part of him until the Pirates finally picked him up very late in the offseason....

I'm sure that doesn't make the Big Stein all that happy, but I'm glad. It's about time certain teams started locking up their franchise players, rather than letting them walk or trading them in the middle of their last season of their rookie deal, etc.

Now if someone would just send a memo to those a-holes in Oakland.
