I bought an old fashioned rotary phone today at a garage sale (for $1) and I was thinking of using it as a back-up phone and as a bit of nostalgia, but the cord that connects the phone to the wall is incompatible with the outlet in my wall. Is there a way of making it compatible? I tried searching for some pointers, but Im not sure what to look for or what the parts would be called... Does anyone know how to do this? I have some ability and can imagine that the wire could be spliced in some way and connected to one that connects with the jack in the wall, but I dont know how to do it or where to go.. I was thinking of going to Radio Shack or something...any suggestions?

could be hard wired directly into the phone.

Nice phone set. Just connect the colors. Red to red, yellow to yellow, etc.

It has 4 wires with little C's on the end that I imagine would have fit onto the screws in the old fashioned socket..

ask for a 625a wall jack(square baseboard type), those "c"'s are spade tips, there should be 4 of them, red, yellow, black and green. disregard the yellow and black as these are for a second line. if there are only 2, you need to run some wire, or if you have that type of jack already, take a screw driver and open it up. once you open it, there are spade tips that are hooked onto the jack cover. remove those and place the phone wire on your inside wire.

The cord ends in 4 wires. I havent yet taken the jack cover off the wall yet, but assuming I need to change that, it should still work, right? (Of course, if the phones functional!)
Incidentally, the phones rotary dial is actually metal instead of the one pictured, so I imagine its an even older model. In the house i grew up in, we had a phone like this in the hallway and Ive always wanted one again, just for a back up. When we had that power failure last year, they were some of the only kinds of phones that worked!

The old ones were made out of an early plastic called Bakelite. You know the stuff, coz it's as if the phone feeld like its made not of plastic, but of Granite.
I think if you hit someone with one of those old phone youd split their skull open before youd scratch the phone.
Great piece; I'm clueless on wiring, and all of the suddent I am reminded of the Brady Bunch episode where they got the Pay Phone.

if it ends in 4 wires, you need to hard wire it into the jack. basically the same thing as a modular plug without the plug. you won't need to change the jack cover. i have a pay phone.

I dunno how thick the wires are, but it's possible you could stick 'em in a standard RJ11. Of course, you'd need a crimper. The only two wires you need to worry about are the red and green. Personally, I think you bought a one dollar paperweight.
