I wonder if I'm the only one on this board who watches this preacher (Sunday mornings @ 9 on channel 5). I don't go to church and I'm not a Jesus freak, but I really enjoy this show. Even if you're an atheist, you can learn a lot from this guy. In fact I bought his new book, and waited on line for an hour to get it signed. He sold out Madison Square Garden for 2 nights last week. You should watch this guy. He's not your typical "repent or go to hell" type of guy.

If loving Jesus makes you a freak, than I'm one. Any, Joel is one of the most peaceful and joyful people you can meet. He's truly a testimony of a person who has the joy of the lord. I hope you read that book Johnny. And by the way, whats the name of it. This lady that used to go to my church told my dad she got a book autographed by him recently as well but I'd like to know which one it is.

Well, OVER loving Jesus makes you a freak.
But I agree, he is one of the less creapy preachers, and he doesn't over push god. I find myself watching on occasion, even as an atheist.

"Your Best Life Now." There was this interesting story of a man who went through life expecting bad things to happen. He worked for the railroad, and one day he got locked in a refrigerated car. Everyone left, and he was sure he was going to die.
He was trapped overnight...sure enough, he froze to death. As it turns out, the refrigerator was out of order. He froze to death in 60 degree temperature because he believed he was going to die. The moral of the story is we get what we expect.
Do you think that story is true?

Found this on a site; cant tell from the site if this is true or not, can one of you confirm/deny?
Joel Osteen is a Word Faith teacher. The Word Faith basically teaches the following, although not all Word Faith teachers are unified in all that they believe: Christians are little gods. We can command God by our words and God wants us healthy and wealthy. If Christians are not healthy and wealthy it is because of our lack of faith and/or knowledge (Christians and Sickness). Christians have total control over their environment by the words that we speak, if we speak sickness and poverty we will be sick and broke. Conversely, if Christians speak blessings and healing we will be healthy and wealthy.

If this is so, I wont flame the guy out of respect for the thread, but this would seem to strain credulity.

I thought pushing God was the entire point of preaching.

Well, I guess if you consider yourself a little god, then sometimes you must show the sinners like flight attendants your righteous wrath

In secular folk wisdom this is early to bed and early to rise and you get wise thrown in at no extra charge.
Osteen has great hair. I had it in 1988.
I'm loving the stories of his wife lately. I wish I had Mikey's popcorn eating smiley to see how this one pans out.

I think its more that "if god is everywhere, then we all have a little bit of god inside of us.' I like him alot. He has a very new age, enlightened view of christianity. while i am not christian, i can get behind alot of the stuff that he says . . . we are made of stardust, after all :)
As for his wife, she was probably on the rag

"We are stardust, we are golden...and we got to get ourselves back to the Garden"
DH, I'm the world's worst Catholic; I respect anyone who has faith, who is able to believe in something that isn't tangible and beyond our understanding
I'm sure Osteen espouses a very non-offensive, easy to swallow, no personal sacrifice or moral imperative theology that values good hair and doesnt judge hot yet crazy wives
I need guilt, damnation and hellfire to get my attention...

Osteen has created the McDonalds of religion. Tastes good makes you feel full, but no nutritional value.

Then shouldn't your screen name be Jonathan Edwards?
&
Isn't Osteen the guy that Ron was referring to when he said that modern preachers just tell you "Eh, why don't you just try a little harder to be good?"
&
I'm of the opinion that these new school Christian preachers (eg. Osteen, Rick Warren) are a whole lot better than the old school nutjobs (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, et al.). Falwell and crew used hate of the "other" as their motivating and organizing force. These new guys are willing to try to mobilize their followers to support issues like paying for medical treatment for AIDS victims in Africa (and here) and to take environmental issues seriously. So there is some common ground to be had.
