Hey, Boston.
Prepare to be destroyed by either National League team.
Both the Astros' and the Cardinals' seasons have made both the Yankees and the Red Sox look like chumps. This year's world series is over even before it begins.
The Red Sox eat it, in four games or less.
The American League is for children.

How does Ortiz stay in the line-up in the NL park? 1st base? No DH for the middle 3 games would seem to be the biggest negative for Boston in the series.

On the off chance that your cursed team actually does win the World Series, in New England it will happen this way:
The the next morning you'll all wake up and realize there's nothing separating you from the rest of the MLB anymore except a bunch of skanky festering facial hair and Cro-Mag outfielder. The Red Sox will be just like everyone else again.
The Cubs will be nicknamed the new Redsox and people on the west coast will make the Cubs their new favorite team for no reason.
one more thing:
Remember when the Dodgers finally beat their hated rivals (also the Yankees) in 1955. The Yankees have still never recovered from '55 and havent won a ... what? they did? the very next season? really? and then 9 more times after that? huh. um nevermind.

Although I'll be rooting for his leg to fall off & somehow the Astros still win, you have to admit the irony of Clemens being the guy to keep the Red Sox from winning a World Series might be the only thing left to make a Yankees fan smile at this point. Whichever team makes it, I'll be rooting for the guys I root for anyway: Walker & Rolen or Biggio & Bagwell.

Most baseball fans have to root for the Sox though. Everybody loves an underdog.
What the hell makes the Red Sox the underdogs?! They finished with the 3rd best record in baseball and have an All-Star studded roster. They won the wild card by like 10.5 games. And if they play the Astros, they certainly are NOT underdogs. The Astros came out of NOWHERE at the end of the season to just barely grab the wildcard.
I hate this misconception that just because the Sox have a history of losing they are the goody goody underdogs that the righteous fans need to root for. When you hear the names Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, & Curt Schilling, nothing in your mind should be thinking "underdogs".

chickenhawk makes a point, and mojo doesnt. since when did the NL get so fuckin good to everyone. all year i heard about how the class of baseball is the AL east, and aside from the cardinals, who by the way beat up on that stellar NL central all year, people are talkin like the NL dominated all year. the astros, as good as they are playing, are only in cause everyone else, cubs, giants, anyone else with a shot, SUCKED down the stretch.
the stros stepped up, but damn if the giants played decent ball it wouldnt matter. the NL hasnt been that good all year, and just because they are playing well against other NL teams now, doesnt mean they are great all of a sudden

Winning doesn't erase bitchdom. Just look to the Yankees for proof of that.
Your boys pulling off the pennant doesn't make them any less hateable. Just more so.
since when did the NL get so fuckin good to everyone.
Since always. The NL is the shit. The AL IS shit.
Yeah, the Astros came and grabbed it in the last three months. They've also played baseball in the last three months that's a million times better than anything the Red Sox have mustered up in that same time period, the comeback series included. In short, the Astros are playing like a fucking baseball-winning machine, while the Red Sox are coming and going in stops and starts. Lack of consistency is going to get them killed.
And since when are the Cardinals not the best team is baseball this year? The Cubs and the Giants blew it in the end, but they were some damn good teams during the year, and were plenty challenge for the Cardinals, who have beaten EVERYONE.
Suck it up and take the prison dick, prag.

yea 22-3 over the last month basically is garbage.

i said specifically except the cards, but since you want to. you gonna tell me that if a team like the yanks or sox are in the NL central, st louis does that well? you're on crack if you are gonna try to tell ANY baseball fan that
look, im not sitting here sayin we are gonna win in 4, i havent even said we are gonna win, though i think we will. but you claim that the sox will get destroyed. lets not get carried away, houston was so good they had trouble with Atl who cant hit there wives in october

From the start I thought the Sox would beat the Yanks and then lose to the Cards in the WS.
After they went up 3-0, however, I was filled with a blinding rage as I watched The Passion of the New England destroy the Yankees last night.
That being said I stand by my original prediction.

I'll say it again...THE ASTROS PLAYED BETTER BASEBALL. The Astros had to play harder, and they stepped up. They had everything going against them, and they pulled it off spectacularly. They have the momentum, and they have the skill.
Are the Red Sox bad? No. But the Astros making the post-season was more incredible for a reason. If they make it, they still have nothing to lose, and they're on the streak to end all streaks. The Red Sox peaked with the Yankees. Despite the World Series still being ahead, taking down the Yankees was THE battle. Mentally and spirit-wise, I think the Astros have more of a chance to win if they make it.
They lost ONE game to the Braves, and that's serious "trouble?" So what the fuck was the Sox getting murdered in THREE games against the Yankees, a disaster?

you are still missing it. you said the astros were a million times better, and you cant be 100 times better than 22-3. my point is, the astros played there ass off to end the year, and deserve to be where they are. but now everyone is just sayin the sox will be destroyed. if you think the astros will win, thats fine, but you are sadly mistaken in alot of what you said, maybe just the magnitude you said, but wrong is wrong, and you have been wrong thus far, like this:
They lost ONE game to the Braves, and that's serious "trouble?"

The Astros didn't play better than the Sox, they caught the Cubs! Who couldn't? I think my Blue Jays would have won that division. Without the sox and yanks, the jays are great (yah right). Fiction can be fun! However, the cards are a better version of the Yanks with better hitting and slightly bette pitching. Lidge (sp) in this series is fucking awesome! I think it'll be a great WS either way, but Houston won't fare as well. My take, now smoke it!

I never really gave a shit about baseball until last season when my best friend and former Army roommate (from New Bedford, Mass) deemed me a "lucky charm" for the Patriots (who I loved since I was a kid because they sucked) and the Red Sox (when I visited last year, they were 2-0 against the A's). I love the Red Sox and will always love the Red Sox. Yeah, even breaking with family Astros tradition.
Plus, I want to add that I love Snoogans faith. I love that. My buddy in Mass is one of those fans who's so used to losing so every time we talk I remind him of the promise I made last year when the Sox lost to the Yankees--the Red Sox will win the World Series this year.
And if you doubt my passion for the Sox. . .well, my sofa paid the ultimate price for Grady Little's Big Ass Fuck-Up.

Okay, the ONE exception can be if you were RAISED to be a fan of a certain team because of family decent.
But I'm talking specifically about those people who just decide on a whim that it would be cool to suddenly be a fan, for no reason other than it being fun.

I actually have no idea where you live... I was referring to the hundreds of dumbass college kids I go to school with here in Boston who are from all sorts of shitty little places scattered about America, who come here and buy a Sox cap and are suddenly "FANS!"
FUCK THEM.
Please hawk! For a Yankee fan to say this is fucking rediculous. People hate the yankees for two reasons, they win and they ruined baseball.
People also like them bc they win. There are way more "fake" Yankee fans, vs that of all the other teams combined.
As for having to live near the team you like, suck my balls! I like the Chargers in football, am I a fake fan. Less wins in the last two years then they will have after week 8 this year. Nice logic. We all don't just like a team bc we live there. I go by feeling and have liked my teams for years. And all three never won a thing when I started to like them. But y the fuck am I explaining myself to a crying yankee fan.

Damn...I really wanted Houston to win last night. As much as I liked both teams' players ('Stros & Cards), I thought Houston had the better staff to possibly shut down the Boston offense. OK, no one's shutting them down, but at least handle.
As far as who has the better chance to win, I don't know what the Vegas line on this series is, but I've always felt like the NL has the upper hand in these series. They've been getting the job done all year with 8 batters (often 7), and now they get the extra pop of a DH for potentially 3-4 games. Not to mention the fact that their pitchers have been hitting all year, so they at least go to the plate with some modicum of confidence.
And there's the DH factor in reverse. Yes, Ortiz does play 1st a few dozen times per year, but you have to feel better with Mientkiewicz (or at least Millar) in the game, which won't happen in the middle three games.
It should be a really good series....after I get over the taste of vomit at the back of my throat from the fact that I'm watching the Sox play. GO CARDS!

fair point, except that AL teams are built for the DH. so many times in interleague play you see NL @ AL and the NL team has some back up shortstop DHin cause they dont have a guy, where as AL teams sign guys who hit a ton just to DH and only play them when they have to, NL parks and such

I root for my home teams (actually the teams from where I'm from -- technically I despise my home teams right now), but this is retarded. Bandwagon fans suck, but geography should not dictate who you root for. If you became a Fisk or Rice fan in 1975 and live in Oklahoma, you can be a Red Sox fan.

I cannot like a player unless they are playing for my home team. I can respect players and appreciate players, but until they're wearing a New York jersey, I don't root for them. I just can't even fathom the concept of developing an allegience to a team that's not even from my home city/state. Why even bother? It defeats the purpose. Did anyone here who isn't from another country root for anyone other than the USA in the Olympics? I didn't. Even if athletes from other countries were clearly better, I had to stick by the US athletes. That's just the way it is and it makes perfect sense.
I'd argue that Michael Jordan was the greatest player to ever step on a basketball court. Does that make me a Bulls fan? Hell fucking no.

I think that statement is insane. Interesting, but insane. But I'm more curious: Can you hate a player on your home team?
I can't turn off my hate for a player just because they put on a Yankee jersey. It happened with Sheffield for the first time in my life this year. That's more because he came to NY & was a good teammate & made himself likeable for the first time in his career. But if he was the same dick who purposely threw balls away to get out of town like he did with the Brewers, or refused to shave like he did in LA, etc...I don't care of he hit 50 HR & drove in 150, I wouldn't have liked him. And the reversal never happened with me when it came to Kevin Brown, or Clemens & Boggs in the past, etc.

I'm with Crippler. Generally, if I hate a player and he comes to my team, I don't start liking him. It killed me when the Orioles picked up Albert Belle.
On a related note, if you like a player on your team, and management screws them over (e.g. cutting them loose, or not making a serious run at trying to sign them in the final year of a contract) and they go to another team, do you continue to like that player?

As much as it hurt seeing them go to the Yankees to do it, I was happy that Boggs and Clemens got the rings they deserved. Of course, they should have won them in '86 with Boston. Jim Rice and Dwight Evans deserved them too.
Nomar? I hope he gets a ring with the Cubs.
And when my Celts let Danny Ainge go I wanted him to win again with Portland and Phoenix. I always loved when he spotted up for a three-pointer and the entire Garden would chant "Threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-YESSSSSSS!"

I never liked A-Rod and never will. Did he help the team? Yea sure. But I don't think he has that Yankee personality. I never liked Clemens eiher. He's great, but he didn't seem to belong to the Yankees either. It seems like he tries way to hard. Sheffield is amazing, and he's earned his place as a Yankee. He doesn't run his mouth or anything, just goes out there and plays. Same with Jeter, same with Bernie, same with...well...Posada. I don't like Posada (I preferred Girardi instead), but he's still a good Yankee. Well...no he isn't. Bad example.
Nomar? I hope he gets a ring with the Cubs.
Why would someone go from one team that's cursed to another team that has a curse as well? One that's even worse than Bostons? He should be beaten with his own bat.

Let me clarify what I meant when I said this. Remember, it was in response to Mikeyboy's question about liking a player that's no longer on your team.
When Nomar was with the Sox I wanted him to do well because he was a member of the team. As he went, so did the Red Sox. Over the last few years, I saw the behavior and attitude that Snoogans mentioned: the half-ass play, the moodiness, the isolation. It was becoming a cancer. It only seemed to get worse when he married Yoko Mia Hamm.
I think it's telling that Jason Varitek, someone picked up in a trade only a few years ago, is the de facto Captain of this team as opposed to Nomar: who came up through the organization and who was the most popular Red Sock since Yaz.
That said, he DID contibrute to the organization becoming a contender again and for that I am grateful. It is in THAT sense that I wish him well.

The DH is EXACTLY what makes me hate the AL. It seems like some kind of retarded rule you'd make up for the "pitcher" in a little kid tee-ball league, because the dorky little fuck is a wuss in the first place, and his mammy doesn't want his precious little ass hurt or else she's suing EVERYONE.
As for Nomar, he wasn't spectacular with the Cubs, but I'd definitely like to see him back with them this year. The biggest albatross around the Cubbies' necks now is that crybaby slumpfuck Sosa. His little tantrum during the last game probably cost the Cubs any chance they had to trade him, and they'll most likely be stuck with him again. I mean, when you have 5 other mostly younger players hitting almost or more than 30 HR's last season, it kinda makes the past-his-peak Sosa seem a little redundant, and his bitchiness that much more glaring. Besides, at this point, if I have to pick between Dusty Baker and Sammy Sosa for the Cubs, it's Dusty by about a bajillion fucking miles.
And, just for fun, and because it'll most likely be his last year playing baseball altogether, I'd like to see Moises Alou finish out his career with the Cubs. The guy played like he was ten years younger this last season, and had more heart than anyone else on the team combined. HE'S a player that I would be a fan of even if he left the Cubs for his last year...even though he's basically said that if he can't stay with the Cubs next season, he's done NOW.

Like I said, general area. Until this year, DC fans had no team... Root for the Orioles, pussies.
And no, I don't erase my hate for a guy when he puts on the Yankee jersey, just like I don't erase my hate for a guy whose talents I respect. But I do give him my 100% support. Michael Jordan, the absolute Knick-killer... Hated him. Guess what. Still the best player to ever live.
Take Clemens for another example. He's a Red Sock in my mind and will always be a Red Sock. Never particularly liked his attitude while he was on the Yankees either. Throwing a broken bat at Piazza? Uncalled for. But when he took the mound for the Yankees, never ONCE did I put my dislike for Clemens above my love for the Yankees. I never said, "Oh, Clemens is pitching tonight. I hope he loses." He was wearing my team's uniform. I wanted him to win.
The team, the colors, the uniform... Those things rank far above the individual.
If Pedro were to come to the Yankees next season. You know what? I wouldn't like him. Pedro would still be a dirty Red Sock in my mind. But when he steps on the mound for the NY Yankees, guess who I'm cheering for.

Ridiculous bullshit. Especially since so much of DC and NoVA are made up of "transient" people not originally from the area, or their parents and family aren't from the area.
Take my brother...my parents and I were all from the Chicago area, but my brother was born out here. He is, however, a Chicago fan in all sports except for football. Is that somehow "wrong?" Yeah, he's FROM here, but his entire family is from Chicago, and he was basically raised as a Chicago fan.

I agree with Mojo. I don't care where people are from that root for teams. My disdain is for the bandwagoners. Most Yankee fans I know have no idea who Steve Balboni, Kevin Moss, or even Danny Tartabull are. That ticks me off more because it shows they jumped on. I'd respect a guy from Cleveland who rooted for the Yankees all his life and suffered through the 80's and early 90's with them, then some guy who is from NY and jumped on in 96.

I've been saying this since it happened at the start of the season: We need Alfonso back. He was marvelous. We could also use Giambi PLAYING AGAIN. After last seasons hitting slump, and this past seasons tumor dilemma, this guy better show me something next year.
This has gone horribly off topic.
Astros are beating the Sox in six. After gaining a lead only to have the Sox regain it by two. But then dreams will tumble as they get beaten in the sixth.

Although I heard that he sat in the dugout three hours after game seven, that's pretty harsh, I probably would've done the same though. Anyone know if thats true or not?
That's not true. He was dressed and giving interviews in the locker room a half an hour after the game.

I'm starting to think that Steve Phillips and Fred Wilpon were right when they said A-Rod had a 24+1 mentality. In the Daily News yesterday one column said A-Rod doesn't have any friends on the team.

Before the series starts let me state for the record that an injured Curt Schilling severely hurts Boston's chances. The Red Sox may have depth but Tito has shown little to no interest in utilizing that depth.
I'm not confident with Ortiz starting at first. Start Mink and if he tanks, pull him and bring Papi off of the bench. If Bellhorn sucks, bring in Pokey. I'll take defense over offense any day.
More importantly, I think this team is spent after the ALCS. I don't like their chances going into a series against the best team in baseball.
EDIT: Red Birds in 5.

This is what I'm thinking, just because history, irony, karma, drama, curses and poetry sometimes get dropped into a big boullabaise.
The Yankees choked bigger than any team in baseball history, and (arguably) bigger than any team in sports history.
The Red Sox have traditionally been the Yankees' bitches and are feeling like they have finally come out on top of the Yanks. They've beaten the Yanks, even if they lost the series, the Yankees still had the biggest collapse in history. Is there any way to best that? Yes. If the Red Sox go up 3-0 and have the same collapse, they are back to being trumped by the Yanks. Does a 3-0 collapse in the WS trump a 3-0 collapse in the ALCS? You betcha.
If the higher power has a sense of humor, I fear that this is what we'll see.

That's what I've been thinking...the big goal of the Sox this year, contrary to the "curse" shit, was to beat the Yankees. And they did, but in the most stressfull, exhausting pay possible. The Cardinals didn't have to beat that massive hurdle. Their eye has been on the final goal, all along. The Sox have to re-focus on the Series, which is, when all is said and done, secondary.

But I'm talking specifically about those people who just decide on a whim that it would be cool to suddenly be a fan, for no reason other than it being fun.
wow. Since when did being a baseball fan become joining a nazi boot camp. I would in fact love to see you saying this to half of yankee stadium. Yankee fans really shouldn't talk about bandwagoning.
And about not being able to like teams outside of the state is insane as Crippler said. And I'm not talking about Mojo's brother's situation, I'm saying that no one has to have any connection to the region of the team they root for.
I'm guessing that you, Chickenhawk, were the son of a Yankee fan. The fact that you just like the team that you were born into doesn't make you any better than someone that grows up in Houston and becomes a fan of the Bears during his childhood. Being a fan (as far as I know) is about actually growing to love a team and not just about being able to say that you live in their city. The city of Houston is a perfect example of how you'd like to have the fans of the Oilers/Titans just betray the team once the Texans come into town.
I'm a Ravens fan wearing a Joey Harrington jersey (coincidentally, not for any anti-Giants reason). I have no connection to Cleveland, Baltimore, Detroit, or anywhere in Oregon. I am just a Joey Harrington fan who became a football fan around 1996 and didn't really feel any connection to a team just because they had NY in front of their name (and ironically play in NJ). So, the Ravens seemed like a team that would be great for a kid that really didn't have a team. Doesn't mean I am any less of a fan because you are a homer.
If the Sox win game three.... well Boston better start worrying.
Same exact thing I'm thinking. I was thinking that the Red Sox could come out on top against either the Cards just because the SAWX have momentum and that the Cards were 1-4 on the road coming into an AL home World Series. So I was kinda ready for the Cards to win Games 3-5 and lose in 7. But if Boston wins 3 straight now, the rest of the series will be completely nail-biting for the reason that the SAWX might lose 4 straight and for my own selfish reasons that I want the Red Sox to win on Saturday or Sunday so that I can go out and celebrate without having to stumble into school early the next day.

Wouldn't Pedro look good in a Yankee uniform now?
NO! NO! NO! NO! He's a dick, he's thrown at Yankees for years, and he's painfully close to being DONE. I want no part of that asshole in pinstripes. I know George will toy with the idea, but I hope his failures in Yankee Stadium help Cashman, Stick, and the rest of the baseball people win that argument.
I had to put up with Clemens & get that little vomit taste in the back of my throat everytime they won with him on the mound, but I will not stand for Pedro.
Crips, I understand hating Pedro, but why Trot?
It's kinda like how I hated George Brett when he was playing, simply because he continuously killed the Yankees. The difference being, when Brett was done I could step back & see how great he was & now I like him in retrospect. Whereas Trot Nixon is a ho-hum everyday outfielder who (except for this year) has hurt the Yankees time & time again. When you take Yankee Killer, add it to Boston uniform, add it to stupid name...I just can't look at him without wishing awful things on him.

Man, the Cardinals suck. I thought this was gonna be a great series after the first game, but this is pathetic. I thought the Cardinals would fight back, but the Yanks showed 10 times more fight than these guys. The Yanks at least were in 3 of the games they lost, and should have won 2 of them. But, even in the first game, the Cardinals never looked like they belonged.

Oh, fuck you, you silly shit. Just look to the Red Sox and Yankees' own fucking region. The next best team is the goddamn Orioles. In the rest of the AL you've got the Rangers, Angels and A's...everyone else sucked some serious dick and didn't pose a challenge to anyone, so quit with the "trial by fire" nonsense.
The Cardinals played fantastic this year, and had plenty of teams just as good as the Yankees and Sox to play all season long. They're choking horrendously now, but that doesn't mean the NL is a shitty league. It means they cracked at the moment of truth.

Astros, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, and the Braves were fucking choice teams this year. Look at the Cubs...choking at the end doesn't somehow make them a "bad" team the rest of the year...they were fucking hard to beat. Shit, even the Phillies and Padres were able to bring it for the bulk of the year. Are any of them necessarily as good as the Yankees or Sox? Maybe not. But even if they're not, they're damn fucking close. Acting like they're nowhere near as good as the Sox or Yankees is downright retarded. The Cardinals had to earn this spot, and they did, over some tough-as-nuts teams.

and the inevitable failures next year that much more delicious.
I hate to break it to you, Sparky, but the monkey's not only of their back, it's dead. Besides, you can coast off of a demoralizing defeat of the Yankees and a World Series win for a good 15 years before feeling like you're cursed again.

no they'll be playing for the yankees we know that. but the sox were cursed and they broke it. the cubs aren't cursed from some billygoat, they've just sucked forever. there's a difference. boston always managed to lose it on a bad play. chicago is usually playing meaningless games by september.

Do I have to bring this up again? The Yankees are suffering from the curse of Mike Mussina. They haven't won a World Series since they stole Mussina from the Orioles. Granted they got him through free agency, and pompous asspipe Peter Angelos wouldn't offer up the cash, despite overpaying Albert Belle, but don't let the facts get in the way of a good legend.

In the off-season I want the Yankees to get Nomar, Randy Johnson, Bonds, Kirk Gibson, Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron, Bob Ueker, and their own midget- the only midget ever to actually play in an official game- Eddie Gaedel.

Boston, Boston,
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Boston on my mind
I'm say Boston
Boston
A song of you
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
I said Boston,
Ooh Boston, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Boston on my mind
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Boston,
Boston,
No peace, no peace I find
Just this old, sweet song
Keeps Boston on my mind
I said just an old sweet song,
Keeps Boston on my mind
Or how about
At last, my love has come along,
My lonely days are over,
And life is like a song,
Ron: Are they lifeguards or lifepussies?!?!

I thought it was the Mattingly curse. They went to WS a year before he joined the team, went the year after he left and now he's batting coach and they lose.

Hey Mojo...who do you got in the Presidential election? :)

The thing that REALLY pissed me off is when the Sox are storming the field after the final out to celebrate their championship, FOX briefly cut to that talentless hack Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore who were on the field filming the final scene for their new piece of shit movie in the midst of the celebration.
I hope someone punched that unfunny bastard in the throat for that.

That might have been a pure fuckup on the Director's part. They might have just saw someone in a Red Sox cap mouth-raping a girl, and thought it was a player. Notice they cut away quickly when the guy pulled up and they saw it was Fallon/

Yeah. He was all heart, though. Seriously. He had an enlarged heart that was the size of Andre the Giant's. His little, miniature body couldn't handle it. Killed the little guy.
