I don't really follow politics. But can someone explain (without bashing the other) what are Liberals and Consevatives??? How are they similar (if they are) and how are they different.

Thanks.

Hafa Adai.

I think both are similar in that they are patriotic to their country. They just have different views of how to do things.

Hoo-boy. The classical definition would be conservatives would be people who wish to preserve the status-quo, and liberals would those who want to change it. Of course, that's really a nutshell response, but I don't want to write an essay, especially since that doesn't apply here.

Liberals and Conservatives are pretty much just tag names for Democrats and Republicans now, the meaning behind the words are pretty much gone.

The difference between Democrats and Republicans, traditionally are, Democrats tend to favor social programs, a strong progressive tax, and a stronger federal government with regulative powers upon industry. Republicans prefer a more laissez-faire approach toward business and want supply side tax cuts (the assumption is if you increase supply productivity the benefit trickles down to the consumer and employees). Democrats, should they offer a tax cut, tend to do so more on the Demand side, (a tax cut on middle-middle class to lower income wage earners) with the philosophy being if you increase demand, then profits increase, thus raising supply, keeping prices low, etc.

That, too, is a nutshell response. There are a lot of social issues (such as abortion) where Republicans are actually for strong government regulation and Democrats prefer to keep govt out (thus being conservative in such that they want to preserve the status quo).

The problems come in when people have a hard time aligning themselves 100% with either philosophy and react in either being an apologist, or simply turning away from both in disgust.

Okay, so, I wrote an essay, if anyone would like to add to it, correct anything I said, feel free. But that, I think, is a good start. And pretty damn unbiased.

mdr55,

i think it's best that you are better off not knowing... i wouldn't spend 3 seconds trying to figure it out. It's labels like these that make Politics the 'fucked-up' thing that it is, like religious labeling...

Jersey, considering that your profile says you live in NJ (as does your name), how does that split even work? I would think that there are at least 3 liberals for every one conservative.

I kinda got stuck as a conservative (yeah its ridiculous) in high school whenever something gay like that would go on because my school was so filled to the brim with whiny guilty liberal kids and because I might actually think that religion aint such a bad thing.

As for the original question, i don't think you can base anything on US politics. Liberalism isn't something that really exists here. The definitions Mojo already gave are great because they aren't in any context. Liberalism probably doesn't come around in a country as young as this one.
