Fair point, I guess. I lifted the thread title directly from the Guardian's web site headline and assumed that anyone who clicked through would realize that it was used ironically. Maybe I should have used "quotes" or smilies :) to make it all better.

Or maybe I should have used 4 * for "arse" instead of the vulgar Americanized "ass".

Anyway, I apologize to any Brits or any other vitamin C deficient peeps I may have offended.

"Limey" is hate speech?

As it was explained to me in high school, it's the equivalent of calling an American a "Yankee." It's a far cry from any kind of ethnic slur or so-called "hate speech." I mean, if it was so horrendous, why would a British newspaper be using it in its own headline in such a joking fashion?

In short, it's a nickname. Slang. "Nigger" is meant to insult, demean and even dehumanize the person it is targeted at. Same with "kike."

I dunno. I could be completely wrong...I grew up with plenty of British expats, and not a one was ever offended by "Limey," and I never even heard it used with a fraction of the built-in malice that comes with a word like "nigger" or "kike" in the first place.

Not that it's supposed to make sense. "Limey's" no big deal. But what about "Kraut?" "Guinea?" Or "Frog?" "Gook" and "chink" are apparently out of bounds...so what defines the difference between a slur and a nickname? Where is the line crossed...and what the hell is the line in the first place?

I am a British expat, and it offends me. I don't want to get of on a rant here, but there is a serious undercurrent of Anti-English/British sentiment in American culture. Not so much hate, just jabs here and there. It comes across as jealous mockery, a sort of cultural penis envy. But notice that whenever something needs to be shown as better than average, superlative, or sophisticated, e.g. a Lexus, they'll always use an Englishman for the voice over. I think I've discussed it here before.

It just get s under my skin that some races, nationalities, ethnicities are afforded this kind of protection while others are not. Bill Parcells has a minor incident for saying 'Jap', but 'Brit' is considered a part of speech. Doesn't make sense to me, but what does is that I get the same protections afforded everyone else.

And forget about the other shit in the thread. Can I make a post talking about chinks being the world's worst drvers or niggers not reading too well? I would assume not ,but this thread is rife with comments about English people having bad teeth. Yes it's a joke, so were my comments and they would not get treated the same way.

All I ask is for some consistency, bitches.

Look, I'll plead complete ignorance here. I had NO idea the term "limey" was offensive. Again, it seems to be the equivalent of "Yankee" or "Yank." Even more so with "Brit"...maybe I'm just completely clueless.

And it would be one thing if this thread WAS filled with attacks on British people left and right...but it's not. If anything, it's making fun of the silly idea the Guardian had, and the moronic responses they got from some of the Americans they contacted (Of which Recyclerz is "kinda proud of some." That's about as anti-British as it got). Nowhere was it even implied that anyone started this thread just to go on some rampant anti-British tirade.

And it's a slippery slope. Pretty much every thread that mentions France or the French turns into "anti-French" jokes. Are those gone? "Northern" posters make fun of "Southern" posters. Is that done? DC fans make fun of NYC/NJ fans, and vice-versa. Is that gone?

Let me put it this way...if someone came on and started a thread about how "I HATE THE FUCKING BRITISH" filled with malice and anger towards the British, yes, it would probably go, since it would serve to do nothing but incite conflict. Have we NOT locked threads potentially similar to that, in displays of ridiculous hypocrisy? Of course. And that all stems from perception. I guarentee you 100% of all the mods didn't think twice about this thread or the word "limey." Does that mean we were necessarily RIGHT in doing so? No. But at the same time, you honestly can't be surprised that probably 99.9% of the people here don't view a word like "limey" (And especially "Brit," which I just assumed was an abbreviation) anywhere near as blatantly hurtful as a word like "nigger."

I mean, as far as I know, "limey" and "Brit" don't even have the historical context of words like "nigger" or "kike" or "jap"...namely, they were never "used" like those words. That doesn't mean you can't find them offensive...but it pretty much guarentees you that anyone using "Brit" or "limey" isn't even THINKING of using them in the same way as "nigger." The context doesn't even exist in the first place for them to do so.
