View Full Version : Jon Stewart Rapes Crossfire

Jon Stewart was on Crossfire today and gave them exactly what they deserved. I wish I saw it, but the transcript is good. here's some excerpts.

STEWART: I thought Al Sharpton was very impressive.

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: I enjoyed his way of speaking.

I think, oftentimes, the person that knows they can't win is allowed to speak the most freely, because, otherwise, shows with titles, such as CROSSFIRE.

BEGALA: CROSSFIRE.

STEWART: Or "HARDBALL" or "I'm Going to Kick Your Ass" or...

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: Will jump on it.

In many ways, it's funny. And I made a special effort to come on the show today, because I have privately, amongst my friends and also in occasional newspapers and television shows, mentioned this show as being bad.

(LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: We have noticed.

STEWART: And I wanted to -- I felt that that wasn't fair and I should come here and tell you that I don't -- it's not so much that it's bad, as it's hurting America.

(LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: But in its defense...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: So I wanted to come here today and say...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: Here's just what I wanted to tell you guys.

CARLSON: Yes.

STEWART: Stop.

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: Stop, stop, stop, stop hurting America.

BEGALA: OK. Now

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: And come work for us, because we, as the people...

CARLSON: How do you pay?

STEWART: The people -- not well.

(LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: Better than CNN, I'm sure.

STEWART: But you can sleep at night.

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: See, the thing is, we need your help. Right now, you're helping the politicians and the corporations. And we're left out there to mow our lawns.

BEGALA: By beating up on them? You just said we're too rough on them when they make mistakes.

STEWART: No, no, no, you're not too rough on them. You're part of their strategies. You are partisan, what do you call it, hacks.

CARLSON: Didn't you feel like -- you got the chance to interview the guy. Why not ask him a real question, instead of just suck up to him?

STEWART: Yes. "How are you holding up?" is a real suck-up. And I actually giving him a hot stone massage as we were doing it.

(LAUGHTER)

CARLSON: It sounded that way. It did.

STEWART: You know, it's interesting to hear you talk about my responsibility.

CARLSON: I felt the sparks between you.

STEWART: I didn't realize that -- and maybe this explains quite a bit.

CARLSON: No, the opportunity to...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: ... is that the news organizations look to Comedy Central for their cues on integrity.

(LAUGHTER)

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: So what I would suggest is, when you talk about you're holding politicians' feet to fire, I think that's disingenuous. I think you're...

CARLSON: "How are you holding up?" I mean, come on.

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: No, no, no. But my role isn't, I don't think...

CARLSON: But you can ask him a real question, don't you think, instead of saying...

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: I don't think I have to. By the way, I also asked him, "Were you in Cambodia?" But I didn't really care.

(LAUGHTER)

STEWART: Because I don't care, because I think it's stupid.

CARLSON: I can tell.

(CROSSTALK)

STEWART: But my point is this. If your idea of confronting me is that I don't ask hard-hitting enough news questions, we're in bad shape, fellows. (LAUGHTER)

[quote]STEWART: You know, the interesting thing I have is, you have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

CARLSON: You need to get a job at a journalism school, I think.

STEWART: You need to go to one.

The thing that I want to say is, when you have people on for just knee-jerk, reactionary talk...

CARLSON: Wait. I thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.

STEWART: No. No. I'm not going to be your monkey.

(LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: Go ahead. Go ahead.

STEWART: I watch your show every day. And it kills me.

CARLSON: I can tell you love it.

Good for Stewart. That takes real balls. Today I saw Charles Wiley from Accuracy in Media (AIM) speak. He talked about media bias (left AND right) and the need for objectivity. He said when he went on Crossfire when it was first starting out, it was a show about the guests fighting it out and once in a while, the hosts would jump in. Now it's all about the hosts and basically just them fighting. It's not about objectivity, but ego.

Way to go, Stewart!

People who love CNN can complain about Fox News all they want, but CNN birthed the basic faux-debate concept Fox is based around with "Crossfire."

Give me news, dammit! Not nonstop editorials and bickering!

But Dennis Miller is one of the shows that asks real questions and people do treat each other like people and there isn't yelling. Besides, it's a *comedy* show like the Daily Show and they have no responsibility to news.

Yes, they press him as if he was a real news show. This is something that people on this board have a problem realizing.

CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you're accusing us of partisan hackery?
STEWART: Absolutely.

It's a fucking comedy show that pokes fun at real events. That doesn't make it real news.

Very true. But you still run into the question of just WHAT his show is, especially given that it's on what's supposed to be, and advertises itself as, a "news network." Miller's latest show, to me, seems to be more of a news commentary show than straight-up comedy...Like "Scarborbough Country," but with a better host.

Maybe it's just the context...I thought Miller's HBO show was just for laughs...but his latest is definitely much closer to an actual "modern news" program, and I think he wants it that way. Otherwise, why would he have gone to a news network? He can't expect us to ignore context THAT much.

Seemed to me from watching it that they did take him seriously, but didn't want to. Well, actually, most of the arguments came from Tucker, while the other dude just looked absolutely entranced by what Jon was saying. But Tucker could only stand up for Crossfire by attacking the Daily Show, which is a weak argument. I'm proud of what Stewart had to say, I just wish more people felt that way. But news is entertainment and entertainment is news.

Besides, CNBC pretty much shuts down after 8. It's more of a financial news channel than a CNN-type news channel. I mean, how else to explain the even worse programming surrounding Miller?

jon stewart did get the best of them, but i do have a problem with him. dont you think its a cop out of him to hide under the guise of being a comedy show. his show has proven to be a primary news source for the younger audience and he has had such guests as john kerry and john mccain. so to pretend that his show is just a small comedy show, when he himself is outspoken about supporting kerry, is a little ridiculouse. i would have been more impressed if he recognized his relevence in politically adjusted media. it probably feels safe to hide under "its just a comedy show' blanket than to face the criticism aimed at political shows

So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life

Morecowbell is right. Jon Stewart is dead on that CNN has a responsibility not to be partisan hacks, and TDS kinda doesn't. However, Stewart is wrong to say that his show is exclusively a comedy show. It's a satirical news show, but a news show nonetheless. The Daily Show is not the same as Letterman or Leno. Leno and Letterman don't advertise how educated their viewers are. They don't advertise that they are the source of news for young people. If I were Tucker Carlson (I'd be a dick) but I'd also call Stewart when he calls his show a comedy show, because they do more than that and they acknowledge that they do more than that. That's why a softball Kerry interview with Kerry isn't good. Yeah, yelling over each other isn't good either, and Stewart won the day, but that doesn't mean he wasn't wrong for at least throwing some toughies at Kerry.

Even though it got so-so to bad reviews by some people on here, the first of the two chapters (the one page chapter) on "the media" in the Daily Show's "America - The Book" is pretty funny, and shows that Stewart comes by his righteous anger at the meida pretty naturally.

No, that's not true. It's a comedy show. He has no responsibility to drill them at all. His one and only job is to make us laugh. The Daily Show is satire and, as such, should not be used as a viable news source. They did not advertise how smart their audience is, Comedy Central did that in defense of having their audience being called stoned slackers.

People who watch the daily show should watch it as a comic reiteration of todays news, not as an actual news source.

I wouldn't expect Jon Stewart to throw hardballs at anyone, he's only supposed to get the funny from them.

Just because some people foolishly THINK they're getting their news from "The Daily Show," does not make it actually a news show.

That's why I always use people on the left thinking they're getting news from TDS (they're not) when complaining about Fox News presenting debate shows and editorial programs like "The O'Reilly Factor" or "Hannity & Colmes" as news programs. People can parrot all they want what they heard on those shows...it still doesn't mean they actually got the news.

Besides, anyone turning to Comedy Central for news REALLY needs to re-examine their understanding of what "news" is.

So does SNL's Weekend update have a responsibility to the "news" they report? How about the rest of the show? They do political/current events stuff but I don't think anyone confuses it with real news.

People can get their news from anywhere, that doesn't make it responsible news.

The Daily Show is meant to make people laugh, instead of doing sketches like SNL or Dave Chappelle, they do a "fake news show" that is based on real news, Having real guests doesn't make it a news show. (For every John Kerry they have a Johnny Knoxville)

I had to listen to the whole thing a couple of times, and then it hit me while editing, I guess when you cut away the BS you realize:

Bow Tie Guy, when things turned ugly, chastized JS , in terms of the Kerry interview: For being Funny and joking, that it was comedy and not substance, not serious enough.

Then when JS drops the 'youre CNN, we follow Puppets making crank calls' line and gets laughs and applause, Bow Tie Guy guy does a complete 180: Why are you being serious? Why arent you being funny? Be funny, John, please?

Meaning: he did precisely and exactly what JS accused him of: Arguing for the sake of arguing, debate not a possibility. The guy was Stewart's bitch after that, so he had to start with the insults.

further proving JS right.

To borrow a Snoogans-ism

Stewart: 1 Bow Tie Guy: 0

Seems the story has legs too; I keep seeing it around, updated.

But when their commercials proudly report just how many young people get their news from the Daily Show, then there is an expectation that they view themselves as a news service of some sort.

It's COMEDY FUCKING CENTRAL, they are in the buisness of making jokes and making people laugh, they may not get it right all the time, but when are they EVER to be taken serious? NEVER.

There are quite a few choice for News on Cable, Comedy Central isn't one of them. If Jon moves the show to CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, FoxNews, Headline News, Bloomberg TV, CSpan,CNN International, NWI, or PBS, then we can start talking about it as a real news show.

Holy Crapsicle, I thought tucker was going to crap in his
hand and start redecorating the crossfire set! Jon Stewart
kicked more ass than a death squad of coked-up ninjas in a

Now it seems there is some argument as to the definition of
the Daily Show as a comedy-news show or a news-comedy
show. Is TDS comedy? duh. Do a lot of people, especially
young people, watch it for news content? yes. Should they,
why the hell not?
See, the Daily Show is really a 30 minute televised political
cartoon, a SATYRICAL EDITORIAL OPINION. Last I checked
they give PULITZER prizes for print political cartoons because
of their value as real journalistic commentary. TDS is carrying
on a tradition as old as the Press.
So does the Daily show have a responsibilty to act as an
unbiased news source? absof*&^%ing-lutely not. Its an
editorial page on comedy central thats the funniest thing on
tv, except for the people who call-in early in the morning on
cspan. Three Cheers for the J-man Stewart making the Daily
Show the relevant social commentary it is today....and
especially for saving it from the clutches of Craig-the-no-
talent-chump-Kilborne. Peace

Stewart has absolutely no responsibility to ask Kerry tough questions. Any similarities between his show and a "real" news show are purely circumstantial and help further the illusion and/or comedy. It wouldn't be a parody if it had no resemblance to an actual news show. If Bush were to appear on <i>The Daily Show</i>, I would expect the questions to be "tougher" only because one would want to see Bush squirm, make his various facial contortions, and stammer, thereby producing a comedic effect. One could not expect the same result from asking Kerry a similar range of questions.
