Don't bet on the Senate voting against this thing in an election year. If you live in or near DC and you don't think more guns in DC are better, then you should call your Senator ASAP. If you live in DC, call any Senator that you have any connection with - you used to live in that state, you have relatives in that state, etc. Explain that you have no Senator and the connection you have to constituents from their state, and then just state your opinion on the proposed legislation. Also, find out if your Representative voted for this thing and call them and tell them that it will effect your vote in November.

I understand that DC is a federal city, but it's not right that they have no representation in congress.

DC/NoVA people, this is no joke. If you don't want this repeal passed, you need to make your voice heard to your local leaders, pronto.

If you pay Federal income taxes you deserve a vote in Congress.

Right....
Cause the handgun ban was really a deterrent to crime in the District....
People have the right to defend themselves...

People have the right to defend themselves...
They also have the right to elect representatives that will be accountable. Polls show that the ban was popular with 80% of the population. I thought you were for states rights. I think this is the same, or at the very least a very similar situation.

You can have shotguns and rifles to protect your home with. You do not need handguns and assault weapons to defend your home with.

The District isn't a State...its a big ass city..and they have their own Rep
And besides, this has about as much chance of passing as I have of being the meat in a Lindsay Lohan/Monica Bellucci sammich....
And furthermore....its pretty obvious that banning handguns hasn't stopped criminals from using them on other people...give the people the chance to fight back...

I can't understand how you can value the rights states so much, but because the city of DC doesn't fall within a state the fact that they have no voting representation in Congress doesn't fit in with your principles. Can you explain the apparent contradiction?
And besides, this has about as much chance of passing as I have of being the meat in a Lindsay Lohan/Monica Bellucci sammich....
Maybe people don't think it's worth the risk. I don't. And I think the principle of people AT LEAST being involved in the way they are governed is more important than trusting a bill to fail.
And furthermore....its pretty obvious that banning handguns hasn't stopped criminals from using them on other people...give the people the chance to fight back...
The residents of DC don't want to take the chance that some wild west of mutual deterrance will make things better. The ban is the majority opinion.

Yerdaddy, I can see your argument with assault weapons...but handguns????? they are better in the house because it would be close combat....also, how would I carry a shotgun to work with me on the subway????? I carry a concealed handgun under my suit....which I'm allowed to do!!!!

hey are better in the house because it would be close combat....
Combat? I don't know about that. All I know is that the guy who told me that it was legal in DC to own shotguns and rifles was a police detective. He said he preferred a shotgun for his home. My two brothers-in-law are cops here in Colorado - shotguns. There's differences of opinions, I'm sure. But a part of the propaganda supporting overturning this law is that the ban prevents people from protecting their homes with guns. That assertion is false.[/quote]
also, how would I carry a shotgun to work with me on the subway????? I carry a concealed handgun under my suit....which I'm allowed to do!!!!
You're an ex-cop. If there's a reason for ex-cops to be able to get concealed weapons then that's a separate issue that deserves a seperate provision.
But honestly, I lived in DC for 5 years and I never once wanted or felt the need to have a gun. My neigborhood was a gheto-factor 7 and I'm a big dumb white guy. I never felt threatened. I think people who think they need a gun in DC are unnecessarily frightened, are more pro-gun than concearned about the safety of DC residents, or are just generally comfortable having a gun regardless of where they are. (For the record, Reeshy, I think you fit into the small penis category).
Bottom line here is: the people of DC don't want these guns legal in their city. What kind of democracy are we that the will of the people takes a back seat to our own political desires?

Just like the caliber and type of round you have in a handgun, that problem depends on what kind of shell you have in a shotgun.
