I wasn't sure if there was an appropriate existing thread for this, so apologies if I overlooked one.
BAGHDAD, Sept. 30 -- Separate bomb blasts across Iraq Thursday killed more than 40 people, most of them children, in a dramatic escalation of the country's violent insurgency that also injured hundreds of Iraqis and numerous American troops.
The most lethal attack appeared to be directed at a government-sponsored ceremony marking the reopening of a water treatment plant in the Baghdad neighborhood of Bayaa. But among the victims were at least 34 children, who had gathered excitedly in anticipation of candy and cake being handed out by U.S. troops, according to people on the scene.

So do the insurgents care WHO they blow up?

with most terrorists, they care what the target is, and it's impact is ... but they seem to care very little the collateral damage that is caused ...
the oklahoma city bombing ... the ira blowing up harrod's ... suicide bombers in a bust isreali nightclub ...
the same can be said of armies, as well ... just depends which side you're on ...

So who are these insurgents fighting for? Can't possibly be the people of Iraq.

Meanwhile, back at the real legion of doom, North Korea is waving huge flags that say WE HAVE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

The purpose of terrorism is to terrorize. The "logic"
of it goes something like this:
By hitting "soft" economic or cultural targets, people become afraid of everyday, necessary activities
As their standard of living gets adversely affected, people get mad at the government for not providing safety
When the people stop supporting the government with their behavior, it becomes easier for the group conducting the terrorism to overthrow it
The Atlantic Monthly had a great article about this last year that I had previously linked to in other threads, but they converted to a paid subscription site so I can't do it again.
The attacks in Iraq started just against our troops but then broadened to target all our allies (military and civilian) with the goal of getting them to pull out, which has had some success, and now the targets include the Iraqis who are signing up to work with us to create the institutions (military, police, infrastructure, oil industry) that are required if there is going to be a legitimate gov't in Iraq that is allied with us, just to create the downward spiral described above.
The fact that Bush & Co. got us past the point of no return into this mess without a thought-out plan to deal effectively with just this kind of situation is, to me at least, inexcusable and unforgiveable. It is not as if this should of come as a surprise; many elements of the government (State Dept., NSA, CIA) warned about this all though 2002-3; the international community knew this would happen; Yerdaddy on this web site consistently posted his thoughts and linked to others' predicting a situation like the one we have now.
Hell, anybody with a 3-digit IQ who ever saw Apocalypse Now would have known to plan for this.
:(
I don't hate much, but I hate this Administration and I am confused, surprised and saddened that slightly more than half of the electorate, as of today, want to keep them in power. All I can say to John Kerry is you better kick ass tonight. I want my money's worth.
[edit: after rereading my post, I should point out that I hate the Islamist terrorists in particular and all terrorists in general a LOT more than I hate W. But I still don't like him because he has done such a lousy job on such an important matter.]

I'm with Mojo. For me, at least, this is different. The 'you cross the line with kids' thing for Chechnya or anywhere else, for me, applies. When you target kids, what cause could you fucking Possibly either be for, that you think this will Serve said cause.
And if you're trying to get Sympathy for your cause? I cant think of a worse action. On moral, and just plain fucking stupid idiotic you dont do that shit.
I'm not making sense.
Has it been determined if the kids were targeted, or if this is just the worst luck imaginable? I dont wanna go off on comparisons to that Horror in Chechnya. I know it shouldnt make a difference, but for me, in some stupid way in the Human Calculus of all of it, it does. For me.
fucking great now my head is pounding.
