Before the tv media explosion you have to check out how the WSOP was like a couple of years ago.
Gabe Kaplan was the host.
No cameras to see what the players were holding or folded.
They had the 1997 WSOP yesterday and that Stu Unger fellow looked really sick it was disturbing. When Gabe asked him "Can I ask you a personal question?" I though he was going to ask how come he looks so fucked up. Scary. I believed he died a short time later with only $10 in his wallet.

They did a special on him a little while before the WSOP started this summer, kinda like a "Behind the Glory." He was supposedly a huge coke fiend, a sometime deadbeat dad, HORRIBLE money manager (he was often not able to put up his own entry fee), but a brilliant poker player (for which reason he could always find someone to front him the money & wind up spiltting his winnings). He was a disturbing looking gentleman.

Stu is generally regarded as the best poker player ever alongside Doyle Brunson. Stu won 33% of the tournaments he entered an astonishing number. He had a photographic memory that was 2nd to none. Also he was the best Gin Rummy player ever also. He once said that he could picture there being another good poker player, but that there would never be another gin rummy player like him in the next 50 years. In the last gin tournament he was in he actually called the cards his opponent had, he was able to count upwards of 7 decks i believe they said.
He was a big drug fiend and normally would win millions and lose it all on drugs or horses then win millions again and lose it all once again. The last WSOP tournament he won someone did front him the money and of course he won.
Best Poker Player ever even though he looked like the walking death half the time.

Did anyone see the one where Scott Ngyen won???
Rounders was filmed that year. Matt Damon shared he lost with pocket Kings to Brunson's pocket Aces.
T.J Cloutier was knocked out. Phil Hellmuth asked TJ about his CFL playing days.
That shit was funny. His opponent who was low on chips went all in--then asked "Can I go to the bathroom?" and went to the bathroom. Scotty looked around and asked "Where he went?" He was pissed off but called an lost that hand.
Another hand there was a 9-9-8-9-8 or something like that and Scotty went all in, got up grabbed a beer and said "You call, I win". The other dude called and Scotty won (he had the 9 or 8).
