I actually heard about this a few months ago from a biologist I worked with when I was a contractor for US Fish & Wildlife:
Anti-Clotting Drug Based on Bat Saliva (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=816&e=2&u=/ap/20040928/ap_on_he_me/bat_saliva_drug)

Pretty cool, and is something for those who see no reason to care about the environment or the Endangered Species Act to think about.

Well that explains the guy dressed as the Dark Knight who was down at the nursing home spitting on residents.
I just thought it was WNEWstinks or ag1247.

I just Googled "Bat" and "stroke" and all I got back were pictures of a grown man in tights and a small boy in a speedo with smooth, bare legs.
Weird.

Different phyla evolved this. insects and mammals both have something such that when they go to get the blood, they release or inject a little blood thinner, and well, to put it mildly, the drugs that nature makes are so far ahead of what we can make.

And snakes too, their saliva thins the blood and it would help a stoke victim by dissolving the clot

SR71 sheesh what a perfect example of both:
-another species thats doing this thing, and
-my Haughty statement above about nature being the best drug maker ever. But snake venom is the perfect example. we're just beginning to understand how these work, and are finding that at other doses, some of the deadliest snake venom shows Huge promise in other areas. Wish I knew more about it.
But again, all our labs are a joke compared to what Mother Nature can cook up.

Thats true, and when they do discover it, I suspect that it will radically alter medicine as we know it. Whe I talk about this stuff at work, I get the reaction that Im sure most of you get...why are you thinking of this stuff?? Do you ever get that? Like its a defect to have an intellectual discussion! I look at at like its brain storming! Who knows whats over looked?!
