Finally I have a baseball team to root for, and the National Game is back in the Nation's Capital!!

I grew up about 10 mins outside of DC, and we've been waiting a long time for the game to come back....this is NOT B-Mo....its a completely different area...Angelos can smoke my big fat cigar....

I am going to be the BIGGEST Senators/Expos geek EVER!! I'm going to buy all their merchandise!!

The 1924 World Series Champions are back!!!!

to be honest Mikey...its gotta be now or never...

They just elected three people who are against the Stadium, so theyve got to get it approved before then...

There's nowhere else to put them...

They can't stay in Montreal, they don't draw in PR, it rains too much in Portland, and the Mariners would make more noise than Angelos about that...

And the NoVa people are out of money, and don't have half the land they need for the park. And everyone collectively thinks they're dopes for wanting to put a park at 28 and Dulles, which doesn't have enough traffic problems already

There are 2 VA groups....one that wants to put the park at 28 and Dulles....

and one that wants to put the team in Norfolk...

The main problem is that sonofabitch ambulance chaser Angelos.....The bastard has even been using the "threat" of a DC team to not spend money on his own team...

And he also said "there are no real fans in DC"...and had his gay ass team down here for a stupid fan fest that only about 20 people showed up to....i shoulda gone there to heckle them....

Wow, this should have been done a couple years ago. You know, while I still lived there. Assholes.

Anyway, Mikey makes a great point, a better one than Mudo. Your right, DC is the only logical choice and any half conscience retard could make the move.

Unfortunately it would not be all that surprising if DC didnt get the team, as Bud Selig has a pretty distinguished history of doing, not retarded, but re-TAHHHHHH-ded things.

I have been working down here all week in DC and as I was watching Comcast SortsNite last night there was a poll about the Orioles becoming a National Leauge team. What was that about? Would Washington move to the AL? Is there chirping about the O's possibly moving to the NL? Personally I would send Milwaukee back to the AL to even out the leauges unless of course the AL is getting 2 expansion teams in the future.

Sad to see the Expos go as I was hoping they would at least be there next year. Due to being laid off at work I had no money to go on my trip to Montreal over the weekend to see the Phillies while they were up there. I was bummed. No Youppi. No Smoked Meat and overly salty chips in that dungeon of a hellhole of a stadium. Glad I at least got to see it last year.

Speaking of which, will the new team in DC if they are called the Senators honour the old Senator franchises (both of them) and the Expos rich history that they have had. Gary Carter, Andre Dawson and Rusty Staub are al retired Expos and I would hate to see those numbers and history lost. I imagine it would just be kept with the new team as the old Senators were with both the Twins and the Rangers.

I am really excited about this! I've been a huge Orioles fan my entire life, but at the same time really wanted a team just for Washington. The drive to Baltimore, especially on a week night, has been torture the last few years, and as much as I love Camden Yards and all of my warm and fuzzy memories going to O's games as a kid, I can't stand Angelos.

I'll still go to the occasional Orioles game, but I really plan to support the new team.

The Orioles to the National Leage rumor was floated out there by some sports writers earlier in the week - no real legs to it. The Orioles depend on the Red Soxx and Yankees series.

Virginia blew it when the didn't close a deal to put them closer to Washington and mass transit - specifically Pentagon City. That would have been great for me, since I live almost walking distance to that. Arlington residents struck that down.

The new stadium, in South East DC by the Waterfront, will be close enough to a metro; not as convenient as the MCI Center, but more so than Fed Ex field; about on par with RFK Stadium, where the team will play until the new stadium is built.

Aside from The Senators, the Washington baseball team was also once called The Nationals - doesn't quite roll off the tongue the way Senators does. Maybe they can make a compromise and call them "The Washington Canadians."

Whose up for "Ron and Fez Day At the Ballpark" next summer????

Everyone I've heard on 980 to-day has pretty much agreed that they have to be called the Senators...But I don't understand how Texas could still have rights to the name. Is there any precedent for that? I don't remember the Colorado baseball team having to pay the New Jersey Devils for the name "Colorado Rockies"

Thats why it pisses me off that baseball jerked us around for so long...this is the only place the team could have gone...i mean look at the money around here, not only in the District proper and NoVa, but places like Bethesda, and Chevy Chase, and other places in Montgy County...

And PG County's black population is the richest in the entire country.....

The fact that baseball went to Denver, Seattle, Arizona and especially the two cities in Florida before coming back here is is just galling (am I missing any others?). Even more insulting was the constant toying with moving them to cities like Norfolk, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, or even Mexico, just completely giving DC the finger.

PAH!

If NY can have 2 teams; if LA can have two teams; if Chicago can have two teams; and if the Bay area can have two teams, then damn it....errrr... sorry... we have the team now, right? I can calm down.

How is not sending a baseball team to a "district" somehow more "insulting" than not sending a team to an entire STATE that doesn't have one, like, say, I don't know, VIRGINIA?

Oh, I don't know - something along the lines of (a) the Nation's Capital not having the National Past time, (b) this is one of the top markets in the country reaching some of the weathiest communities in both Virginia and Maryland and (c) the fact that MLB promised that one of their top priorities when the Senators left for Texas that DC would get an expansion team.

Different era - different demographics. Besides, how many baseball teams has New York "lost" over the years?

The Dodgers and Giants left for one reason, a chance to make even more money. The Senators left Washington twice because of lack of money. That's why the Mets have stayed and the second Senators had to leave. When the Devil Rays are forced to leave Tampa Bay would you give them another team? And then another? I agree that Washington is a good choice now but I think all the other places desevered a chance before Washington was given a third.

So much has changed since the 60's in DC. From a rough estimate the majority of people who have moved (I would say approximately a million in the last 30 years) are from Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, and even the midwest like Chicago and Michigan. Baseball places. It's nuts to try and drive home from Baltimore right after a game has ending because so many people are getting on 95 south.

If this baseball team has even the slighest success on the field (playoffs in the first 3 years, maybe) this will become on of the most profitable baseball team in MLB. Face it, all our other team suck pretty bad, excpet for the skins--have sucked for years, and most likely will continue to suck.

They left because they were a money sinkhole. Now DC gets ANOTHER chance? Whereas Virginia has had, oh, ZERO shots at a team. VA fans have been forced to just "carry over" with the Redskins and the Baltimores, and now they're expected to do the same AGAIN with this new team. Unless these guys come out of the gate winning, the rich "trendies" are going to dry up REAL fast.

My main gripe is just the entire league being too big. Granted, a team wasn't ADDED here, but I would have much preferred to see the entire Expos frnachise fold and the league contract. It's just too damn bloated for its own good. Each state should have the option of one NL team and one AL team and that's IT. Texas and California should have a bunch of their teams moved elsewhere in the country.

Yeah, yeah, I know it'll never happen, but I can still wish. And it just pisses me off when a non-entity like DC with a transient population gets picked over an actual state like Virginia. Forcing potential fans to "transplant" is just lame.

Virginia had the Redskins, they balked at putting the stadium in Arlington/Alexandria (it's now a target, best buy and a movie theater--I would complain but that's where I do almost all my shopping). They didn't even have to pay for it, Uncle Jack paid for the stadium himself. Viriginia could have had the baseball team and balked at putting it in Arlington. Sound familiar?

The NIMBY folks are strong in NOVA (probably about 20 years too late, of course) and have killed any chance you all had.

Mojo - While I agree with your comments that the league has gotten too big and some of these teams should fold, I still hold fast that DC deserved this long ago, if (for no other reason) than it was part of the agreement when the Senators left in 1971 that Baseball would put a replacement team on a fast track.

The reason the first Senators were allowed to leave was because they gave DC a team right away without any delay - as part of the agreement!

And it just pisses me off when a non-entity like DC with a transient population gets picked over an actual state like Virginia. Forcing potential fans to "transplant" is just lame.

Not too dismissive and myopic??? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since the government also treats DC residents as non-entities come election time. Well, some of us are actually from this area and aren't afraid of hispanics and blacks that may be attracted to a downtown ballpark.

Ball busting aside, if the park was in Virginia (even in Arlington) Maryland fans would not have supported it. If it had been out in your neck of the woods, DC residents would not have supported it as much. A team (and stadium) within the district will attract people from the Maryland and VA suburbs, plus the city, and (since DC's major source of revenue is tourism) will bring in tons of out of towners who are looking for something the whole family can do once the museums have closed - they might even schedule their trip around when their team was visiting.

(And I'm not even bringing up the traffic nightmares had the team been put out in VA!)

This aside, though, I kind of like the idea of a MLB team down near Norfolk, that could attract the NC fan base too.

I think about that proposed stadium every day I drive down Rt 1 into Alexandria - instead of 8 - 10 days a year with shitty driving (which wouldn't have been as crippling as with FedEx because a metro stop would have actually been part of the stadium, like MCI Center), there is lousy traffic year round.

But yeah - I do some shopping there too.

And just to be clear about something - I actually feel bad for the Expos fans in Canada. As a baseball fan, I think it sucks they never got it to work. All kids (even Canadian kids - haha) should have that experience of going down with their parents or grandparents and watching baseball. There's just something very comforting about that - I don't know.

I also feel bad Vegas didn't get a team. As one of the fastest growing cities in the country, they could support it, I think. And as I said in the earlier message, Norfolk is also not a bad idea, as it would also attract those south of Washington, east of Atlanta, and north of Florida.

Baseball for everyone!

Well, I did NOT know that. That is pretty shitty if that was promised and it's taken 30+ years for it to come true.

While that's the short end of the stick, I think it's unfair to Virginia as a whole since the "Senators" will probably just be their "assumed" team when it comes to later planning, and that's really shorting the bulk of the state in the long run, since this new team will be seen as "their" team, when in actuality they're basically neighbors with the pre-existing O's. And like the O's, it's just expected Virginia fans will transplant themselves to this new team without actually having a team of their own.

Long, long ago the Redskins were the only team for "the south." There are still lots of old codgers in North and South Carolina who are Skins fans - the Skins theme, in fact, used to be "Fight for all Dixie" (or maybe it was "Fight for old Dixie" ?), and now it replaced "Dixie" with "DC."

In any event - the Skins now play outside of Washington, in a land once known as Raljon, Maryland.

Well, it would have been hosting the Skins, but considering Redskin Park is in Ashburn, VA the team is actually the Northern VA Redskins. They practice there, all the administrative staff is there, and I would guess most of the players live out there. They basically only leave VA to play their games.

As a counter point the 'Washington' Capitals and 'Washington' 'Bullets' started their existance playing in Landover, MD, just on the other side of the betway from where FexEd Field is. They only moved several years ago to their downtown arena.

And sorry, didn't mean to lump you in with the crazy Senator fans (I so want a different name).

Point Being?...Los Angeles has lost THREE....THREE...football teams....and the NFL is still making noise about putting a team there...

The problem with NoVa's bid was that they had nothing....they were running out of money, and they didn't have HALF the land they wanted for the stadium...and the location was awful.....like there already isnt enough bad traffic in VA.....it would be nice to put the team there, but the road system in NoVa is so antiquated and awful, that no one would go there, or they would be like Dodgers fans and leave in the 5th inning...its easier for NoVa fans to come into the city than it is for people to come out there...the roads can't handle it..

And the District has the Metro...yeah they were talking about running the Metro out to the new stadium, but that would take literally about 50 years to get done...

And wouldn't you agree that a terribly bad area like SouthEast really could use something like this to revitalize the area? not just with people coming in and spending money there, but jobs in the stadium, and construction jobs too...look at what the MCI Centre did to that part of town....its amazing....

The point its, there's more positives for MLB and the community to have the team in the District..it was here at Griffith for 71 years....and its where it should be...

An excellent point. There is such a huge amount of people from the midwest (I was utterly shocked to find so many Pittsburghers when I moved) that are eager to attach themselves to a team. Being a transplanted fan absolutely blows dick. This team should have been in the district two years ago, hands down. But, hey, I'll still be going to games this summer when I'm back in town. Personally I would send Milwaukee back to the AL to even out the leauges unless of course the AL is getting 2 expansion teams in the future.

i'm the only guy, but I'd like to see a 32 team league. I just like even numbers i guess and i'm too young to even remember pre-wildcard baseball so i'm no purist.

I'd think that in the event that two teams would be added that Portland and Norfolk (well maybe not now) could get teams. And I know Monterrey, San Juan, and Las Vegas were at least mentioned in passing. What about New Orleans? Did they ever have a shot at a baseball team? I know it rains a lot there (i think their yearly rainfall is actually only a little less than Portland) but they're a pretty big market.

Oh and if the league were split into 8 divisions of 4 with only the division winners going to the playoffs, I challenge anyone on the board to make a layout of the current 30 teams and two expansion teams that works well. It would definitely take some re-adjusting. I came up with one, but came out with a division with like Detroit, Milwauke, TB, and Texas in it.

I hear Washington Grays being supported by some people like Dan Patrick and Michael Wilbon. I like that considering Washington Senators doesn't seem like it will happen.

The easy solution for that is to NOT let the DC citizens pick.

I don't want them to be the Senators, just seems like every time you say their name, it reminds you of the two teams that left.

If they are going to use a old name I like Diplomats, the name of the old soccer team from the 80's.

Yeah...i guess they had to go with Nats...that was the name of our old, old school team here...and Williams was dead set against "Senators"(cause of DC's lack of representation)...

Our new GM Jim Bowden's made a bunch of moves already, they got rid of Rocky Biddle, and they traded Juan Rivera and someone else to get Jose Guillen, who Bowden worked with and had a good relationship with in Cincinnati

It looks pretty promising so far, the whole Linda Cropp thing on the council died pretty quickly, and season tickets went on sale, and they sold 10,000 the first couple of days...

Now if we could only hire this guy as our manager....

The District of Columbia Council voted 7-6 Tuesday night to approve legislation that would finance construction of a ballpark. But it contained a provision that...require(s) private financing for at least half the stadium construction costs, a provision not contained in the September agreement between baseball and Washington Mayor Anthony A. Williams.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the start, baseball owners insisted a publicly financed stadium for the team be a component of any move.
Wow, MLB must be PISSED!
Personally, I can't wait to be a fan of the Las Vegas Lucky Ladies in 2006.
Washington Nationals shut down operations. (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1946925)
They might not even last the offseason in D.C.
A previously scheduled news conference to unveil new uniforms was called off and fans who bought tickets to watch the renamed Nationals next season at RFK Stadium can get refunds, said Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer.
Baseball will not resume talks with other cities until after Dec. 31, the deadline in the agreement for Washington to put a ballpark financing law in place.
Sure, blame the owner. Just like we did with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Meanwhile, NY historians have found documents showing O'Malley bent over backwards trying to stay in NY, and Robert Moses kept telling him to go fuck off. I know how much money is in that area. I send most of mine there. Fastest growing real estate market in the country, with a hahaha. ."Conservative" . . hahahahahahah in office. So much for smaller Gov't. And it will matter if the team is bad. The newness wears off (like in AZ) AND you folks have a 2nd area team, the Orioles. Throw in the fact alot of the town is transient, and it empties out in summer. I didn't think it would work from the get go.
Seriously...i feel like someone punched me in the stomach...this sucks. I've always been against public financing for ball parks though...so...i just don't know what to do or say or think at this point....
Sorry to hear you feel that way. But you could simply honor the original agreement, and build the ballpark. Municipalities compete against each other, and if you wont, Vegas will. Apparently, the gov't officials thought they could suck in MLB, then screw them at the end. This is when businesses say "Bye bye!", and the politicians smear the owner as greedy and evil. If I was Bud Selig I'd do the same thing. Sorry you feel so bad about it, but if you opposed building the ballpark, you are part of the reason why they're leaving.
That's true cakes...the original agreement did say the park had to be built with public money...
But the DC Council figures they have MLB by the balls, and in this case, they do. MLB has nowhere else to move the team for at least the next 3 years. There's no stadiums anywhere they can put them. Portland has no stadium. Norfolk has no stadium. Charlotte has no stadium. Vegas has no stadium...and speaking of Vegas:
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman went to baseball's winter meetings last weekend trying to attract attention to his efforts to lure a team. But he could not offer a firm stadium plan.
"It's just a glint in my eye, at this point," he said.
I don't oppose building the ball park, i just oppose public money being spent to build it. if the residents of the District want the ball park financed with their dollars, they should be allowed to vote so...
AJ's right about Abe's plan. Abe's stadium completely revitalized what was an absolute DUMP around 7th street. The Jack brings 90,000 people a game into Landover and changed that area, but that stuff was built with thier own money. I guess sometime's thats not so easy either when you get a situation like the goddamn Ravens did when Glendenning gave Modell a sweetheart deal that screws the State of Maryland for the next 30 years, while Jack had to bend over backwards to build his own stadium on his own land
And Fuck the Goddamn Orioles....the only reason those jackoffs are here is because of Clark Griffith, the owner of the Senators at the time
I'm not sure who I hate more right now - Baseball or the District Council. Both have gone out of their way to screw the fans, for political reasons.
But the DC Council figures they have MLB by the balls, and in this case, they do. MLB has nowhere else to move the team for at least the next 3 years.
The owners are pissed - I would not be surprised if the Nationals go right back to Montreal and sit it out until something more real is set in stone with someone else. If this doesn't happen, the DC Metro area will never get a baseball team, ever.
Have you noticed that when they talk about other city's that Las Vegas is at the top of the list now? Northern Virginia is NO WHERE even being considered now. We've blown it.
HAVE YOU ALSO NOTICED that with the name "The Nationals," this team CAN be plopped ANYWHERE, because it's in the National League? I think Baseball hedged it's bets - the future owners can't touch that name for something like 3 years.
The owners have lopped off their noses to spite their faces before (remember the strike?!), and they will do it again, especially for what they will see as an ungrateful city.
Yes - it makes sense to want an owner to pony up the cash for the stadium, HOWEVER - the time for that discussion was 5 - 10 months ago - 2 - 3 years ago. This surprised NO ONE. They knew what they were agreeing to, and some horrible people did a bait and switch, all out of political motivations.
Anyone wonder why the Redskins play out in Maryland?
Because the white folks in the Alexandria neighborhood of Del Ray didn't want it in their back yard - and instead opted for an enormous pain in the ass shopping mega plex, where SKW and I can buy DVDs on Tuesdays??
(Hmmmm...maybe a dozen days a year of bad traffic, or 365? Stupid whiteys).
They should have rebuilt RFK in the District - torn the sucker down and let The Jack build his dream there. Skins fans knew how to get there without causinig havock across the city.
FedHex Field is in the eighth ring of hell (conveniently located to the inner loop of the beltway), in and among the poorest Washington suburb with crime as bad or worse than DC itself. Expensive parking, if you can find it. Lines to the shuttle busses to Metro can take an hour or more to get through. And because of no Metro access, game day can shut traffic down EVERYWHERE - even well into VA.
The Abe Pollin/MCI Center plan should have been the model.
I agree, but there is no ownership group to pay for it. They were just now taking bids, and no owner is going to want to have to expect to have that added to the deal.
I'm not sure why a corporate sponsor can't swoop in and build a stadium, and have it be part of the naming rights? AOL Park? Local, and they have the money.
Actually, i kinda agree with what the sports business guy was saying on ESPN.com...that theyll be contracted...
The owners can contract two teams if they want to after 2006, its in the CBA so the Union won't/can't oppose it...
And the owners would make a bundle of money...cause they wouldn't have to pay for the Nats anymore...
The only reason the Expos are still around is because they are planning on selling them. They make the bundle of money selling the team for 450 Million (most of which will wind up going to Peter Angelos). Since baseball owns the team, that money goes directly to the owners. That's the reason this team was never contracted.
They're paying for it now, because they know they are going to get a lot more in return.
The Orioles really arent a local team. It takes like 2 hours for me to get to the stadium for an evening game and like an hour or so to get back home later that night. In the 5 summers I lived in MD, I went to 2 games.
The reason the team failed in the 60s was because the city was small and populated solely by federal workers. It is completely different now. There is so much money in the outlying areas that they would not have a problem selling tickets and the Orioles would not suffer. Loyal Os fans will not simply stop going, trust me on that one.
You're overeacting. Baseball will go where it thinks it can make money. And where they have a stadium.
UUUGGGHH! The "Nationals" was the name of the DC team BEFORE it was changed to the "Senators". Look it up. It was a way of throwing a little history in with the brand new team. NO CONSPIRACY HERE!
The owners have lopped off their noses to spite their faces before (remember the strike?!), and they will do it again, especially for what they will see as an ungrateful city.
The owners dont know what to do with this bag o shit franchise. They cant even find a buyer for it, It's being run by Major League Baseball. They would LOVE to find it a home, even if the local Pols are shitheads, and lets face it, where aren't they. These guys didn't get to be Billionaires by biting off their own noses.
Linda Crop is asking for more time from Baseball.
So what this boils down to is politics, plain and simple. This woman has her name on every news broadcast, every sports talk show. I think it was Tony K who said it, she's running for mayor--starting right now.
And i've had the public financing explained to me this way--it shifts the funding from the city to private, but the private companies get massive tax breaks. So basically the city is still paying for the stadium, they just can claim they are not. It's underhanded and borderline unethical, and that's why baseball is so against it.
All this talk of public financing needed o be brought up last year when the city was pushing so hard to get the team
.
I was watching OTL last night and Michaek Wilbon made a great point. The big argument that Crop makes is that the public schools are in disreapir and should be fixed before any stadium is built. Wilbon said that these are legitimate gripes, but they werent brought up when the financing plan was being worked out. Also, the schools have been in sad shape since the 60s, and not building a staduim isnt going to fix the schools.
I think this is just Linda Crop is just doing all this to push her own agenda while trying to come across as the public's savior.
When, in your lifetime, have the schools ever been discribed as being in wonderful shape, and no extra funds are needed at this time. Come to think of it, name ANY government run agency who's said that, ever. If you're waiting for the public school system to be "fixed" before you're willing to do anything else, then NOTHING will ever get done.
Plus throw in the fact that these projects get bonds floated to pay for them, of which a small fraction gets paid out on an annual basis. This should be covered by the team in their lease. The city is basically providing the financing, and if they're smart (Hah!) shouldn't pay anything out of pocket long term. Should MAKE money with new tax reciepts related to venture. So when you hear $450 mil, as with most politicized issues, it's very misleading.
