What do you get a very good friend as a gift for their engagement party? What's the price range? Any gift suggestions?

You get gifts at your wedding. For an engagement party, no gifts should be necessary. But that's just my opinion.
I'd go for the Foreman Grill.

Well, the fact that he makes 5 times what I make and she makes twice what I make, cash may seem stupid. Unless you meant Johnny Cash.

are they registered somewhere? you can always get something off the registry.
or maybe a gift certificate to a home store, such as home depot.

Calphalon
Henkels
Corelleware
Pyrex
Any of the above can be bought separatly or in money saving packages. This stuff is the top of the line, and with care, will last forever!!

That's a good idea Nick. I don't think they are registered anywhere yet but I they are looking for a house. My sister-in-law said that most you should spend $50. Is that too much or too little for a close friend?

Almost forgot about the $30 Apex DVD Player when it goes on sale at Sears (every other week) I have a skid of those bad boys in my basement for gifts or replacements!
a "vey nice" set of knives will cost you WELL over $200.
I would go with a few select knives and maybe a block. Go for a carving knife, a utility knive and a boner (tee hee) Henkels also has an awesome scissors!!

Boner is a sharpener, right. So maybe in addition to the boner, a carving knife and a utililty knife.

you should only spend about 50 bucks, maybe 100 if they are very close to you.
so for that price a set of knives it out. home depot gift certificate would be better.
unless you just want to get them one really nice knife.

Actually the boner (more tee hee) really is just that. For de-boning fish, removing the bone from the breast-meat, etc. The sharpener is called , are you ready, a sharpening steel.
Henkels also has a Brazilian line with wood handles instead of the molded plastic. I have a few of those, and the steel seems to be just as good. I just worry about the wood absorbing the many nasty bactirium that are present when working with raw meat.

At my store, people usually spend around fifty bucks for an engagement gift. If you don't have any good ideas, a gift certificate is a good way to go.

Money - usually $50. We got $50-$100 from friends/family. I wouldn't expect more than $50 from someone my age. Or a gift card to Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, Linen's and Things, etc.
Don't buy anyone a fondue set ever, please. We got one and its going straight back to Macys.

Get her a $25 gift card to a place like Sephora/Williams Sanoma/Crate & Barrel/B&N/Pottery Barn
Give him a $25 gift card to an Radioshack/Gaming/Hardware store as appropriate based on what you know of his interests.

cash is always a good idea, if not see if they are registered some where. Or you can just get them something personal for their home.

Consumer reports once listed these Knives as a "Best Buy". They may not carry the cache of Henckels or Wusthoff but they are forged and heavy and look impressive.
15 piece set is 80 dollars
8 piece set is 50.
um..i however own the Henckels and love em.
