View Full Version : Biggest band that ever played your college

the speaker thread got me thinking. What's the biggest band that every played your alma mater? My friend's brother went to SUNY Albany and they had U2 during their WAR tour.
I went to Fordham ('85-'89). We had UB40 play one year, Squeeze another. My favorite was The Ramones tho. I was on Concert Committee. They were so nice. The Church were assholes.
How about you guys? Any cool stories?

I worked security for a show by The Kinks with the Del Fuegos opening at my college. During the Del Fuegos sound check, me and some buddies broke into their dressing room and stole their weed.
Later, Ray Davies of the Kinks was so fucked up when he took the stage that he kept thanking "New Haven" when in actuality he was in "New Hampshire".

So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life

Did some time at Brandeis back in the early 90s.
We had The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, who were dicks.
And a ska band I dont remember the name but they were big at the time.
Also Boogie Down Productions and De La Soul. They were cool. De La partied with us.
Also Dave Chappelle when he was no one and nothing except funny as hell.

I forgot to add Huey Lewis and the News (I blew it off to watch "The Day After" which was heavily hyped and blew), Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (I was in the front row and was severely disgusted when the profuse sweat dripping off of Southside kept hitting me in the face - plus his final encore was Hearts of Stone which was a total downer) and the Motels (I showed up just for one song the, encore, "Take the L Out of Lover and Its Over" and called it a night)

when i went to nyu i saw sy and jello biafra (who really sucked ass, reading his 'act') ...
the coolest show i saw was at my gf's college: live with weezer as the opener ...
the coolest show i missed: at nyu john cale was playing, i thought if i went and lou reed showed up, that would be really cool ... well -- i didn't go, lou reed showed up, played half the show, and was the basis for their (veryshort) reunion tour ...

I went to a large school with a 15,000 seat basketball arena, so I'll just list the big bands that I actually saw.
Rusted Root
Screaming Trees
Reel Big Fish
Goldfinger
Save Ferris (opening for Goldfinger)
Live
George Clinton & the PFunk Allstars
Wyclef Jean
Billy Joel
Fuel (playing first on a Monday night for like 12 people, 6 months before they got huge)
Cher (w/ Cyndi Lauper)
Foo Fighters
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Run DMC
Crystal Method
Filter
Limp Bizkit (left after 3 or 4 songs cause I can't stand them)
The Lemonheads
The Fun Lovin' Criminals
The Brian Setzer Orchestra
That's all I can remember, i'm sure there are more...
Also had tickets to see Bush and Moby, but I got sick and didn't go.
And the Limp Bizkit/Filter/Run DMC was a Family Values tour. I missed the first band which was fuel, about 6 months before they got huge.

Since Eugene, Oregon is not exactly a magnet for national touring acts, it's mostly indie folk that I recall: Pixies/Bob Mould, Camper Van Beethoven, Fugazi, Firehose, All, and the great Ani DiFranco.

I went to Trenton State and we had Live, G Love and Special Sauce, and George Clinton with P-Funk. They all were great.
Quick story: at the start of P-Funks show George Clinton walked through the crowed to get to the stage and right by me. He had the B.O. of a homeless Jim Norton.

I went to a large school in a very small, out of the way town, so we didn't get anyone really important when I was there.
The Romantics
The Bangles
Hoodoo Gurus
Joan Jett
Jello Biafra (spoken word thing)
The Outfield was scheduled but cancelled when their guitarist broke a hand or foot or something.
Terrible. I hate you all that had cool bands.
The Bangles show was a big deal for the college, because it was the week "Manic Monday" peaked at number 3. A few weeks later, one of them ("Michael") actually bad mouthed our town in a national magazine because we were too boring.
Joan Jett was there the same time "Light of Day" opened. I don't think I went to any of the shows, but I may have.
Not really surprising the top notch quality since the college radio station actually programmed top 40 music ("From Wham to Stacy Q!") - before I took over as music director in the summer of love ('87) and shook it up.
It was interesting, then, that the college and the town had some amazing local bands. I still occasionally pop in some of their tapes, almost 20 years later. Some real talent up there in the North Carolina mountains.

Back in the day in NC, Blues Traveler played our on-campus coffeehouse -- John Popper (pre-gastric bypass) filled the room. He threw harmonicas into the crowd, then had to ask people to stop playing them because they were throwing off the band.

My brother went to Manhattan back in the late 70's. He used to bounce at all of those bars by the subway Terminal Pub and Characters.
GMU would get some big bands we had INXS, PIL, Billy Idol w/the Cult. and Ziggy Marley.

We had REM, UB40, The Stray Cats, General Public, The Psychedelic Furs, The Bangles. My best friend Hugo was chairman of the concert committee and would always invite the bands to his house for the after-party. Most of the bands politely declined. Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles snorted and scoffed at his invitation, and Hugo told her he was only inviting her to be nice anyway, and then said something snotty to her about her bad skin (they work wonders with stage makeup apparently).
General Public showed up for the after-party, and they were all very fun and cool. Even funner and cooler were UB40. As soon as they walked through the door, Ali Campbell produced a large baggie and immediately asked "ok, who's got the razor?" Of course, Hugo had it.
Ah, the 80s. *wistful sigh*

Excellent question! ;) Actually no, they didn't. They were either not partaking, or keeping their stuff to themselves, or were much more subtle about it than UB40 was.
They did, however, all get laid that night (not with me!).
