I was driving around Jersey City yesterday around Grove St. and came across this MASSIVE building up on a hill all made of brick. It looked like it was half abandoned but then it looked like the other half was in use. I saw some sign on it about NJ Health Services but really have no clue what it was.

Looked like a castle it was so big. Anyone have any idea what this huge building is?

Fuzzy.......do you know where I can buy Samosas in Jersey City?? (I remember you stated before you like Indian food)

Could that be Dickerson Highschool??? It's a huge building on the Hill.

But it's the Jersey City Medical Center. It used to be the numero uno medical facility back in the day. Speaking of which, while I was mowing the garden, these people asked me directions to City Hall.......was that you???? I gave them directions to go to Montgomery and make a left by the old medical center. If it was....small world.

Yup, a couple of you are right... If you stand in the front of the New J.C. Med . Cntr., just to the right is an awesome old abandon building called the Helen Hays building or something like that. It may even be the Haig Building. And , to the right of that building is the Healthcare Building that you spoke of, which I worked as a Foodservice Director as an Interim Supervisor. That building is now a Nursing Home owned and operated by 2 Dudes from N.Y. by the name Isreal Ingberman & Jack Cohen.

isn't the old Medical Center up on Montgomery Street across form the armory....

Grove street used to have a huge brick building but it was Sioux Pork, around Pavonia. If you take Grove towards Hoboken then you hit a big warehouse think it was the Lackawanna Warehouse around 16th Street. If you take Grove the other way you go past City Hall i think and you'll run into the new hospital which was built right across the street from my grandfather's and uncle tony's junk yard on Canal Street...

then again i've been out of there since 86'

Well.. lets try to explain it some more..

It's a massive structure, yellow brick. Might be a couple separate buildings but they are all connected.

If you are coming down Grove Street towards this thing the Exchange Place PATH station will be off to your left. Keep going straight until you hit the end and see the Boys and Girls club Building. Make a right there and then another left at some point. The castle thing will be on your right up on some hill. It's HUGE.

Half of it is abandoned, looks like they are trying to restore it, takes up a bunch of blocks of property. Surrounded by fences and I saw a sign on it that said NJ Health Services and a bunch of No Trespassing signs. If you go around the back of it (down the hill a bit) you will see that all the windows are broken and there isn't much going on. Real spooky looking. The different buildings of the complex are connected by walkways that are half way up the building. I remember that one of the buildings had a marking on the door that said Beizois Hall, or something like that, started with a B, I remember that much.

did some searching, maybe this building?

Ficken's Warehouse
766 Grand Street
State and National Registers of Historic Places, 1984

Erected in 1910, by the German immigrant John H. Fickens who operated a stable and warehouse in the Junction section of the city. The designer was Ernest E. Quaiff, a local architect. This three-story Neoclassical (or second Renaissance) structure was the Bergen Station Post Office for fifty years.

The building is on a nearly triangular lot - like a slice of pizza with a bite out of the tip. The location is a hill with a street on each of the two long sides. The very grand main entrance - decked out with an arched portico, Doric columns, frieze, and a fanlight - fits smartly into the small end. Also present at either side of the entrance are two small windows topped by limestone keystones. Above the entrance is a large clock set in decorative stone.

Residential housing is the current use.
