Some deserving folks and some not so deserving folks. There wasn't a whole heckuva lot to do while feeding the wee one (actually feeding a baby, not a euphamism for taking care of things down there), so I endulged my weakness for awards shows and watched the Primetime Emmy Awards.
Random thoughts on the awards:
* Gary Shandling as host - I really like Gary, but unfortunately had to agree with him on many of his comments directed toward how the show (particularly some of his bits) was dragging.
* That notwithstanding, one of the better lines of the night - Ray Romano and Gary standing at the urinal as they are talking about how one of them needs to pee faster because the show was miring down. Camera shot widens out to Chris Rock at another urinal asking the same question 80% of the viewing audience was wondering: "Who the hell is Elaine Stritch?"
* While I understand that this was the season for both Frasier and Sex and The City, I felt that both shows (or actors therein) were given awards merely for that reason. The last season for both seemed diluted in comparson to their past ones. Certainly, they weren't good enough to warrant beating out their respective competition.
* I felt Sopranos wasn't at it's strongest this season either. Still good, but not necessarily "great". Deadwood recieved quite a few nominations, but considering how long people had waited for this season's Sopranos, there was not fucking way in hell that Deadwood was going to catch a break. Cocksuckers.
* The Sopranos win for Best Drama was a great acknowledgement of a show that broke ground in the area of writing and style - if it had been given 5 or so years ago when it was due. Still a coup for HBO to finally break ground on the Best Drama catagory that has been locked into major network ownership since the beginning of the awards.
* Another fine line of the night - Conan O'Brien commenting on how much he missed seeing Joan Rivers there this year and then explaining her absence by stating that she was "Protesting Hi-Definition TV".
* Most unfunny bit by a "comic" - George Lopez who couldn't figure out how to deliver a short funny line, then decided to drag it out by turning it into a descriptive bit of how a Latino would actually refuse being fired by Donald Trump.
* "On the spot funny" award - goes to quick thinking goes to Mitchell Hurwitzh who won the award for Best Writer of a Comedy Series (Arrested Development). As he was just starting to go down his list of people to thank, the 'get off the stage' music began. His comment: "I'd like to sing it to you."
* Leading us into one of the more satisfying aspects of the awards show. Arrested Development took several awards last night and showed that tired shows like Will and Grace can't just expect to snag awards based on what they once were. (West Wing also received a wake up call after Allison Janey ended up being the only one to walk away with a win - although it was her 4th win and on the heels of TWW's worst season thus far).
I've got more thoughts, but this particular post is dragging on almost as long as the awards show. I'll save them for later and let the other two people who caught some of the show share their comments.
