View Full Version : Remember any of your school speakers?

Through my years of school we never had an acual official speaker come talk to us in the auditorium. It's has always been more like book talks, just last week all of the English classes had to witness this extremely overweight 67 year old woman from Texas talk about getting her own books publised. Dragons, Dragons, Dragons nothing but Dragons. One book was about a vegetarian Dragon. One book was about a Dragon that has OCD. One book was a sci-fi (Dragons on another planet). Very uncomfortable to sit through the 45 minutes of rambling, as she kept on bringing up how she was going to die much sooner than any of us because of her health problems.

Who was your strangest, most famous, or speaker/guest you remember the most to come to your school?

I never graduated college, but my girlfriend did from the same school. The speakers at the graduation were Anna Wintor of Vogue and Calvin Clein.

In High School (Marion, IN), David Toma (inspiration for Toma and Barretta TV shows) came and spoke about addictions.

He let both the S and F bombs go liberally throughout his speech. Kids loved it, and teachers were "concerned".

Cardinal Bernard Law spoke at my college graduation. He has since been transferred to the Vatican as a reward for participating in the pimping of thousands of young boys to pedophile priests all throughout Massachusetts, and then protecting those same pedophiles by stonewalling the authorities.

I hope there is a special level of hell designed solely for those clergymen who take advantage of their position.

Montel Williams once spoke at my school, which was about a year or two before he got his TV show. So he wasn't really famous at the time.

In college I took a "History of the Beat Generation" class and we had Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Plymell, Ann Charters and some others come and speak. Then we would go back to my Professors house and get hammered with them.

I am almost positive Joe Theisman spoke at my H.S. sports award dinner. I am equally almost positive he was still a student at N.D. at the time. I'm positive this gives him enough wiggle room with the NCAA...almost.

Maya Angelou spoke at my college. I didn't go because I got to read her contract rider for the event. No questions from students before, during, or after her speaking engagement. No autographs. No classroom appearences. Never mind that she was getting $10,000 plus %50 of tickect sales for a 1 hour speech/reading.

No, I do not remember one single speaker from my school. But, Ed Kranepool, a New York Met, spoke at my little league and gave me my team MVP trophy. Does that count?

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker

At my graduation, there were lots of long winded speakers that nobody gave a shit about. Les Paul received an honorary degree, said 5 words, and the graduating class went apeshit and gave his a standing ovation.

When I was in college, Timothy Leary spoke not too long before his death. All the stoners were thrilled to see this hero of the anti-culture, but he ended up being really pathetic. There was a psychedelic screen behind him which was ok, but he could speak. He stood up there and mumbled for 45 minutes or an hour while people sat there politely and tried to understand what he was saying.

When I gave a speech during career day at the school I also coach basketball and track, one of my players came up to me during practice and said, "You work with Crazy People!". And I replied--You're telling me.

We didn't have a speaker in college, though Steven Spielberg was thre recording the whole ceremony.

I seem to recall a lot of speakers when I was high school, but the only ones I can actually remember names for are Wynton Marsalis, Al Franken and Gerald Ford, who actually I think spoke at some point when I was in middle school and the only thing I remember about him is that he seemed so old. I don't know what Al Franken spoke about but I remember we all loved him because he cursed and was funny (his daughter went to my high school). My graduation speaker was Anna Quindlen, but she was boring. I also seem to recall that Katherine Hepburn was my little brother's graduation speaker. Yoko Ono came to my senior recital.

Judy Blume. We, the class, had no idea who she was, besides Larry's mom.

yeah. One of my classmates' father was Paul Zindel, same idea. And here's something a little weird. One of my classmates' mom was Linda Evans. I just checked up on her on imdb... it seems that the whole time we were in middle/high school, Linda Evans was dating Yanni. HA!

To me she was just the woman that brought good black & white topped cupcakes for class every year at Nikki's birthday. I'll never forget those cupcakes, mmm.... cupcakes...

in high school they bought in Mike "D" this dirtbag with long hair telling us to stay off drugs and constantly refering to himself in the third person and telling us what a bad ass he was. he would get up in the non-drug using people's faces and say"you think your cool HUH??? " i could not take this idiot seriously!

No kidding? I wonder if her Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing was based on his experiences that year.

There was a guy named Mr. Sparky who looked like Gallagher, kind of, who would come into our elementary school to tell stories with props. All the kids loved him.

Apparently he loved the kids too, cause Mr. Sparky suddenly didn't come to our school anymore because they found out he was molesting little kids and keeping pornographic pictures of them.
