It's no surprise (http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=98791&hubName=nhl), but until last night it wasn't official.
Bummer.
Also, for anyone who can't get AM radio reception in the office, Commissioner Betman will be on the air here (http://www.fan590.com/) to discuss the topic any minute now.

Man this really sucks.....And its even worse I didnt see this topic up before i posted my own....
I can't really say I have beef with either side, I mean I can understand the players not wanting a salary cap, and I can understand the owners being in a bad financial situation...
*sigh* this just makes an awful day even more awfuler..

I wonder if this (http://www.detnews.com/2004/wings/0408/16/b04-237600.htm) will actually get off the ground. Or, more importantly, if it will get any TV coverage to give me my hockey fix in the coming months.
Oh no...I'm thinking of a February without hockey! Nothing but pro & college basketball (which I loathe), and baseball anticipation....

The AHL and ECHL will still be playing. It's not the same but it's better than no hockey. If the lock out goes on for too long, I'll probably take in a few Trenton Titans or Philadelphia Phantoms games. Maybe even a Bears game out in Hershey, too.

The fact that the players were willing to roll back their salaries 24%, which is HUGE, shows their commitment to wanting to settle this and resume playing.
Now the owners and Gary Bettman (that fucking rat) are showing their true colors.
I hope they all fucking die in a fiery crash and the NHL comes back with new and wiser owners.
This is rediculous.

I hate the Goddamn Flyers...have all my life..
But the one thing they did that made me happy was when the Russians came over in the late 1970's to play a bunch of NHL teams. They pummeled the Rangers and tied the Canadiens. Then they made the mistake of scheduling the Flyers...Good Lord the Flyers just DESTROYED them! Beat the hell out of them!!
The Russians got so upset with how physical the Flyers were being and what they felt was poor officiating and just decided to leave. In the middle of the game...they just left...the game was delayed like a half an hour until they were convinced to come back out...

The original NHL Schedule had the Rangers facing the Devils this Thursday at the Garden, and the Flyers on Sunday.
But as far as I know, which I will grant you is not much, there is nothing NHL/hockey-related going on anytime in the near future except for a meeting today between league officials & the players association. And all I expect to see come out of that meeting is the official ending of the season. But, then again, I'm not exactly Johnny Sunshine.

NEW YORK (AP) -- One day after the NHL players' association rejected the league's latest salary-cap proposal, the sides met again in what might have been the last chance to save the hockey season.
The union invited commissioner Gary Bettman and players' association chief Bob Goodenow back to the table Thursday after the leaders sat out the previous five sessions during a two-week span. The meeting began around 1:30 p.m. and was still going on more than seven hours later.

The NHL and the NHL Players' Association met from 11 a.m. EST and ended talks around 3 p.m. EST. NHLPA Executive Director Bob Goodenow said afterwards that no progress was made in the past two days and his negotiating group is on its way back to Toronto.

A while back I was angered at the owners for rejecting what I thought was a valiant effort by the players, now though I'm siding with the owners. I think through this process the owners have now made a reasonable offer that the players should have accepted.
And once again Bill Simmons wrote another hysterical article over on ESPN.com, this recent one deals directly with the NHL lockout, go check it out if you have some time.

This is a bunch of fucking Garbage Why should their be a fucking cap? Here is a novel idea. DO NOT PAY THEM SO MUCH. Stop paying the Holiks of the world 40mil. Why should the players have to pay because the owners are dumb as dog shit? same thing with baseball. what happened last year? The owners did not pay the players a lot. And contracts went down. Vlad got 75milWhat would he gotten this year? even if he still had concerns of a bad back. at least 100mil. Vasquez who at the time was known as one of the best young sp out there got 40. And what happened this year? The fucking owners went buck wild again. Arizona who was crying poverty for years went nuts and played players a ton. Beltran is not near the player that vlad is and he got 119mil. the cap is bullshit. get a hold of yourselves and stop overpaying for players. Then the prices will go down and no cap would be needed. I'm sick and tired of owners wanting a cap because they can't control themselves. An yes the yanks Spend a ton. But last time I checked. They haven't won since 2000And What about the Rangers? They are God Awful every year. except for Bos this year. All the teams that have won have had low payrolls. I think the cap is bullshit and will always think that.

So many teams are so much in the hole that they can not compeat. And it hurts the leauge. Its really boaring to watch.

plus you need a cap. for one, its not like a few teams lose money. 75% of the league loses money.
2, owners make money by winning. without a cap, they make dumb decisions blinded by winning. IE going out and giving alot of money to a guy because you need him to win, and cause someone else will beat you if you dont get him.
with a cap, you dont have to worry because the other teams cant out spend you, so you can keep salaries low.
the reason they cant get a deal is cause there is no middle ground, there is either a cap or no cap. though both sides are suspect, i gotta lay this on the players. they are rejecting this cause they know they wont make as much money in a couple years, and instead of being smart and investing money, they wanna blow it like idiots

If i would go for a cap.it has to be a hard cap. if the NBA had a hard cap the Knicks would not be in nearly as bad as they are now. And the Piston was like once in what 10 years? The owners still make stupid Moves Snoogs cap or no cap. You have players making Max money who have no business making it.

you do need a cap though, cause its about winning. if you dont have a cap, its kind of an owners job to go overspend on a guy for a year to try to win. thats what you want, with no cap, thats what they cant control. tryin to buy a season of winning. with a cap, you dont have to worry about other teams doin that, so you dont have to do it yourself.
its not that any given owner cant control himself, he just has to compete with other owners, and it gets to a bidding war. Cap, you cant do that and lose as much money. the NHL loses so much money that the owners are right, they ABSOLUTELY NEED A CAP

what i really think is goin to happen, is somehow, the NHL will find a way to get Impass, meaning they can use replacements.
if that happens, 75% of the NHL players will cross the line, cause alot of those young guys do need the money.
I dont care what they come up with, all im worried about is that they get lazy with it now cause the season is done, and then have to do this again next year instead of figuring it out in like may and Definately having a next year

It's just rough for me because the Devils were literally the first sports team I can remember rooting for (then Notre Dame and the Yankees). So watching a team go from dead last, and being labeled a "Mickey Mouse franchise" by Gretzsky, to Champions was the single greatest sports moment I've ever witnessed in person.
I really don't like the idea of replacement players, it makes me feel like the league is second rate and almost pointless.

Im thinkin now more about whether hockey can survive after they do come back. NO ONE IS GONNA BE THERE

Yeah! I went to a hockey game expecting to see the "glowing puck" and I didn't see crap. Talk about false advertising.
Even if they try to have a season, I'm not going to a game unless they lower some of the ticket prices this season to "LURE" what fans they have left back to the game.

It's all over but the shouting. Holy crap, the owners even gave in (kinda) on the "salary cap or nothing" stance & the players' association still turned down the latest proposal (http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=114287).
But at least they had the guts to finally set a deadline for this weekend to get a deal done on paper or call the season off.

Well, if you want the transcript of the 45 minute conference, it goes something like this:
"Blah, blah, blah, players bad! Blah, blah, blah, making no progress. Blah, blah, blah, not ready to call the season yet. Blah, blah, blah, soon though. Blah, blah, blah, PLAYERS BAD!"
I'm not saying it wasn't nice for him to take the questions, nor am I saying that the NHL is wrong. But at this point they've made the players look like absolute fools and there's nothing left to say but:
(a) This season's done...and our next meetings won't be until September where we will continue to get nothing accomplished & fuck up next year too.
or
(b) We've come to an agreement & here's when the first game will be played.
Just stop pulling our dicks already.

As much as I'd like to see the Devils and the rest of the NHL back on the ice, I wish they'd shit or get off the pot already. How much you want to bet they push the deadline for calling off the season back another weekend?
Even if they do have an abbreviated season, I have my doubts about the quality of play even though they are the best players in the world and keep themselves in shape year round.
When they get around to calling the season off, I hope they keep the talks going instead of taking the summer off and starting up again in September like everyone expects them to.
Until the big league gets back in action, I'll just be happy that the AHL and ECHL are still playing.

A news story (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2005/02/02/918110-cp.html) out of Canada is reporting that a small group of players begged/forced the NHLPA to come to the table with an offer that included some kind of cap. They did, at $52 million, and the league rejected it. The league's last offer put the cap at $40 million.
Therefore it is now, moreso than ever, strictly an issue of money. Only now we can put a number to it...exactly $12 million. If these stubborn jackasses can't come up with a way to split a difference of $12 million, they deserve to die the slow death they'e been crawling towards for the past 152 days.
There is a press conference scheduled for 1pm tomorrow where it is expected that the season will be put mercifully out of its' misery. But this latest story continues to give hockey fans just the smallest modicum of hope.
I'll be hopeful somewhere deep down in the cockles of my heart, but come 1pm tomorrow my realistic side still expects we'll be saying... (http://home.comcast.net/~jdspe5150/lonelymantheme.mp3)

In all seriousness hockey is my second favorite sport behind baseball, it saddens me this had to go down the way it did. The sport was suffering enough as it is, and the repercussions from this could be devestating. Maybe the players will turn to 'roids and the game will get exciting and win it's fans back next year.

I was thinking last night they could have a season if they just wanted to do playoffs. Just let every team in kind of like college B-Ball. What is there liek 32 teams? Start best of 5 series. Random draw for seeding. They can stretch this out another few weeks and still do this plan since hockey lasts until fucking june or something.

As much as I'd like to see them play, I'm glad they made the announcement to cancel the season instead of stringing it along for a few more weeks.
Then again, EJ Hradek said on SportsCenter that both sides were beginning to fully realize what a huge mistake they were making and continued to talk today with the possibility of a deal being struck and the decision to cancel the season being reversed. Who knows?
Until they can make up their minds, I'm looking forward to the Frozen Four and a few AHL games.

...and so now Gretzky (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2005/02/02/918110-cp.html) is trying like hell to help get something done. I sure hope. I just got some fight DVD of the Flyers, Bruins and Canadiens to tide me over. I LOVE the sport, yes I do, but I love the old school 70's fights.
If there is a shortened season I would hate to see a full playoffs because it wouldn't seem right. 25 game season and then the Top 16 in? Maybe something like the Top 8 and only 3 rounds of the playoffs. It would seem so much cheaper any other way.
My little complaints about the NHL today:
The Expansion killed things. What right does Florida, Carolina, Arizona and Tennessee have to have a HOCKEY team? Sure there may be some fans in those states but to rape Winnipeg, Minnesota and Hartford of their teams was the biggest injustice. Isn't Minnesota a hockey hotbed? Crazy. Quebec leaving for Colorado was just a shame. Sure, Colorado fits for hockey but to pull a team from Quebec was just nuts. Especially to have them win the Cup the first year in Denver. If the Nordiques would have stayed no WAY would Patrick Roy have ever gone to Quebec. The Nordiques and Canadiens had such a brutal rivalry. I still can't believe that Guy LaFleur played in Quebec one season after he was with the Rangers. That was just so odd to see.
Expansion in "non-hockey" type towns failed miserably in the 1970's where Cleveland and Kansas City couldn't hold a team for more than 2 years. I think they both wound up merging with the North Stars. I don't see how it could last much longer in Columbus, Miami, Tampa, Charlotte, Nashville or even Atlanta all over again.
As far as hockey being a little bit boring these days, I blame the Devils with all their clutch and grab and keeping it to a 2 - 1 score. Hey, it got them a few cups, great and it was something that worked for you guys. But damn, the whole leauge took notice (as I guess teams do when they see something work) and it's a more boring sport than it was say 20 years ago. Man I hate the trap. I blame too the goalies looking like Michelin men in the net. How much bigger can your pads get boys?
AND the most important thing, what to do with the Stanley Cup. Didn't Lord Stanley want the trophy to go to the best team at the end of the season? So if there is no NHL and last I checked the NHL doesn't "own" the Cup, would the AHL Calder Cup winner get it or would there be some kind of a tournament of the best of North America vs. the best of Europe?
So watching a team go from dead last, and being labeled a "Mickey Mouse franchise" by Gretzky, to Champions was the single greatest sports moment I've ever witnessed in person.
I just went back and read everything in the thread. That Game was an awesome statement. I remember the Flyers/Devils battles and wars back in the 80's that were just bloody as hell. When the Devils still had the GREEN in their uniforms. It was always a rite of passage being a Flyers fan to hate the Rangers and then loathe the Devils and Islanders but the Devils hit the top of my list when they lost the green. I'm kind of a uniform junkie so a simple uni change like that makes me hate them worse. That and Scott Stevens joining from the Capitals. I respect the hell out of him as a player but man was he fun to root against.
And I would be lying if I didn't smile the last time he flatlined Lindros. I couldn't wait to see that False Messiah leave town. Colorado/Quebec thanks us for their Stanley Cup.

Signings are really the only thing that need to be sorted out, Melrose even just pointed out Boston only has like 10 players under contract. But the players are all in fine shape, most of them are literally in game shape so training camp won't be that big of a deal. Once the signings are sorted out, everything else will easily fall into place. I'm so excited, even if it is a shortened season.

Hearing all this stuff go down last night, I was pretty confident about this deal getting done. But oddly enough it wasn't Panger or Melrose that made me believe the deal was done, it was the fact that apparently the players over in Europe were told to give their teams 24 hours and return home immediately, that's what put me over the edge. I'm so pissed right now I can't even put it into words.

Here's some recent news
A Boston-based firm proposes to put up $3.5 billion to own all 30 teams. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2003701)
I doubt this would happen, I think it's improbable to get all 30 owners to agree to this...but who the hell knows now, eh?

Francesa went through this today. Basically, Forbes magazine puts the total cost of all 30 teams at 5 billion. So, this isn't even close to being enough money so why start trying to figure out how one owner running the NHL could work.

<p>To get back on topic if I may, what do you guys think of the
proposed new rules in hockey that are happening in the R&D
camps? Such as no touch icing, keeping the goalie in the crease,
eliminating the red line, smaller goalie pads, and the new overtime
concept (4 on 4, then 3 on 3, then a shootout), etc...<br />
</p><p> I'm all for
no touch icing and erasing the center line as it will create
basketball-like fastbreaks and I guess more odd man rushes, I'm curious
how these new concepts will workonce the league returns. <br />

<p>I like just about all of the new ideas, I'm just afraid that if they institute them all at once it'll be like watching a different sport. I think they should go with the smaller goalie pads, remove the centerline, and maybe the no touch icing & see what that does for goals production before they forbid the goalies from playing the puck & start using the over-sized, oblong goal nets. </p><p>But maybe the most important things they need to do are the crazy idea that's thrown around ever year about ENFORCING THE RULES when it comes to clutching, and do away with ties. I don't care if they use the 4-on-4, 3-on-3, shootout way or something all together different, as long as there is never another tie...EVER. And as long as they playoff system of playing till there's a winner never changes.</p>

<p>You don't think that teams will adjust to it. And so what if it is up and down the ice bombs - that's more excitement for the fans - which i am. And the NHL needs to do what it can to bring back the fan and make the game exciting again. Now from a pureist point of view this would suck. But hockey is facing desperate times and they need to remake the game to suit the fans of the 2000's not the 1970's. And you may hate to see it but would you watch the game if there was no offsides and the scores were 10-9, or continue to watch the 3-2 games you have now.</p><p>Also the width of the ice should be widened as well</p>

The size of an NHL player has increased so much in the last 25+ years, but the ice surface stayed the same size. There's just not enough room for the really talented players to show their creativity. I think it needs to be extended & widened, but I don't realistically think it'll ever happen. If for no other reason than it would reduce the amount of lower bowl/prime seats in arenas & owners are whores.

<p>I recently read an article saying that there should be a conference between mid June and mid July announcing the return of the league. Not sure if it was just wishful thinking on the part of the author or if it's reality though. </p><p>As for the proposed changes, the only one I'm definitely excited about is the shootout. I know a lot of hockey "purists" think this is a bad idea, but personally I think the idea of ties is an even worse idea. I don't think they should have a shootout until the tie is broken though. Let them play one full period of 4 on 4 hockey and if they are tied after that, go to a 5 man shootout. If by chance they are still tied after that, then it actually ends in a tie. </p>
<p>I'm not a hockey fan by any stretch of the imagination but shootouts are the worst idea in the whole world. </p><p>Also, go players. Hockey owners are evil. </p>

broduer send off alot of good break out passes. broduer usually has
5-10 assists a year. also, goalies leaving the crease can add to goals
if they fuck up.</p><p> </p><p>you wanna change a rule, if the
goalie leaves the crease, you can hit him like any other player. THAT
would add some spice to hockey </p>

<p>and the new overtime concept (4 on 4, then 3 on 3,</p><p>I've been saying this for years. If you dont follow hockey you dont even know what the teams record is in the paper. My overtime idea is 5 on 5 for 2 minutes and at the first wistle after that 2:00 point, the ref kicks off 1 person from each team to the bench. 2 minutes after that same thing happens. Over times will be over in frigging 10 minutes real time. 2 on 2 sounds stupid but its penalty shot city and the games ending real soon. </p><p>Anyway I always thought since most arenas arent full anyway, why not widen the ice creating more front row seats? I mean shit, every seat in the house would be closer to the ice making the fans more likely to enjoy themselves and come back. Sell that premise to owners and we got olympic sized ice.</p><p>Taking away offsides penelties is a horrid idea, and Snoogans hit the nail with the goalie being able to roam. Hit him hard and shitll get exciting real quick.</p>

<p>So much to cover.....</p><p>1) Adding width to the ice surface is the best idea in this thread. I played at a hockey camp in Guelph and the Olympic ice size was awesome. It added speed and skill to the game, and clutching had less an impact. </p><p>2) Not allowing the goalie to play the puck is stupid. It's a part of the game and always should be. Hitting the goalie is even more stupid and will never be allowed. They have protection from the puck, but are at risk of so many other injuries with that equipment. The goalie of the NHL is the quarterback of the NFL. They will protect them at all costs. If not, they will return the favor with some huge hits from the front side when players try to wrap around and come in on a break. </p><p>3) The red line elimination I can deal with. Yet if they expand the ice to olympic size it's not needed. Taking away the red line is like taking the run away from a football team. </p><p>4) No touch icing would protect players from some injuries throughout the year, but take away from the hustle performers, especially late in the game. </p><p>5) Smaller goal pads: It's been happening for the last three years. It's had an effect, but a slight decrease in size would be a better change than increasing the size of the nets. </p><p>6) The overtime shootout I will never agree with. Fuck this pussy way to end a game. I'd rather a tie any day of the week. The best change is simple, 10 minutes of 4 on 4, not 5 minutes. This would all but rule out teams trying only to hang on to the tie, even though they get a point no matter what. 3 on 3 is a video game and a shootout is fucking soccer and that's as gay as it gets. Canada lost the olympics to Sweden on a fucking shootout with Forsberg becoming a hero on the winning goal. He's my favorite player of all time and I think it's bullshit. To play for a whole fucking our to end it on a game of hockey "horse"......fucking weak. Play the real game, not something totally different.</p><p>7) Crip is so right that if they incorporate to many if not more than one of these changes at once the NHL will lose it's best fans. These are the fans who will be there as soon as the league resumes play, not the fringe fans they would be catering to if they do this. </p><p>8) KO I usually agree with your sports opinions but the NHL's low scores are nothing like soccer's low scores. I'd go as far to bet the margin itself is huge. Hockey is the only sport where defense is as exciting as the offense if you know even a little about the game. A great glove save, a huge hip check, a bloody fight, an amazing kick save, a mean open ice hit. All enough to make a crowd to go wild. In soccer you're lucky to have 10 shots total in a game. In hockey the average is well above 40. </p><p>9) Getting rid of offsides will never happen and shouldn't. Stupid idea that would ruin the game.</p>

<p>"And you may hate to see it but would you watch the game if there was no offsides and the scores were 10-9, or continue to watch the 3-2 games you have now."</p><p>I'll take a great played 3-2 game any day of the week. Why not just remove the goalie and call it retarded ice basketpuck. Where the team who shoots 55% loses to the team who shoots 60% in the last 5 minutes. Boring fucking game which is what soccer is on the other end of the spectrum.</p><p>King Imp; ties are a part of hockey and always will be. If not, you are messing with the game and it's base. </p><p>Snoogans, you know the game, I'm surprised you'd suggest that the goalie be open game. I think that alone would make most teams never let him leave the crease. Too valuable to risk at that position. Hence the rule change you hate technically comes to fruition.</p><p>Wadd, hockey fills a huge percentage of it's seats. Sure it has a few teams that are having trouble, but even the NFL doesn't sell out 100%. The owners lose money bc they pay their players too much. This is the case since it's tv deal is terrible. In fact, even towns with minor league teams usually sell out as well. Hersey and other AHL teams have great local followings. The problem truly comes in marketing the sport outside of the team areas. The advent of HD tv should help the game on tv, but the nhl needs to market it's sport a better. </p>

Several valid points there. Personally I thihnk the idea of playing 1:05 or even 1:10 of hockey and having no winner is much worse then having a winner as a result of a 3 on 3. Yes the shootout is gay but 4-4 or 3-3 gives a clear advantage to the skilled players and you're either gonna have a winner or tons of highlight saves. I despise ties.

<p>If the league and players come to their senses for the 2005-2006 season they have three major pluses coming off the strike. </p><p>1) <strong>High Def TV</strong> as I noted above. I love the game on tv already, but even I noticed the difference when I got HD last year. This will allow novice fans to follow the game better and it draws you in even more.</p><p>2) <strong>Sidney "fucking" Crosby</strong> This kid is unbelievable, making LeBron look shitty in the NBA by comparison. He alone can make a team a winner as a rookie. He set the Quebec Junior Hockey League on fire this year with 66 goals, 102 assists (168 points) in 62 fucking games. This is the premier league for budding stars in Canada. He ended with an unheard of +78 ranking. In the playoffs he had 14 goals, 17 assists (31 points and +11) in only 13 games. The only player to score more in this league for a season was Mario Lemeiux. Funny enough, read this "<font size="1">Wayne Gretzky told a reporter from The Arizona Republic, in answer to a question if a player may some day break some of his records: "Yes, Sidney Crosby. He's the best player I've seen since Mario (Lemieux)."" </font></p><p><font size="1">3) <strong> If the NBA is dumb enough to strike next year</strong>, the door will be open for the NHL to rebuild. I also think most pure fans will go right back as they weren't as pissed off at the owners for sticking to there guns on this. Most agree with the owners and would rather save the game as it is and pay the players what they can, as opposed to changing the game to increase it's popularity to an unloyal fan base in order to pay players more. Fuck those who don't like the game as it is, I'd rather keep it as it is for those who really love the game and always will.</font></p>

I'm not blaming owners for trying to have talent on thier teams and doing what it takes to win alittle. You blame the douchebags like Sather who overpay for defensmen and then dont even have the sense to put them in situations they can perform well in. I dont blame the players either because THEY are not the ones that said no, its thier dumbass represenitive that said no over andover again. First off, ring the bell for the second to last Wadd post. Earl would be pissed. The other thing is that Brodeur faces the best shooters in the world at the all-star game. And I doubt very much he practices for something like that. Do you really think the NHL's best current goalie wouldn't be able to adapt if they were a part of the game? I hate the Devils, but come on, have faith in your man.

Trust me, I watch this competition every year for one reason and that's to see how my goalie fares. Every year he looks like a junior hockey goalie on those breakaways, yet "lesser" goalies are able to handle the shots better.</p><p>Now, would he be able to adapt with practice. Of course. He is a good goalie, but being a fan of the team, I can honestly say he's not great. His numbers come from the fact that he consistantly has one of the best defenses in front of him to take the pressure off. Put him on a horrendous team like the Rangers and I guarantee he wouldn't have the same All-Star numbers. </p>
