Somehow I think that had it been really big it'd be on at LEAST one new channel right now. It sounds like it was an accident in the middle of nowhere.

Panic is the last thing we should do. Take some deep breaths and remember that North Korea would be lucky if it could even get a missile to america let alone a nuclear bomb.

EDIT: Also, mushroom clouds can happen with all sorts of bombs, not just atom bombs, which are also very hard to create and contain.

North Korea has a pretty big stockpile of missiles, some capable of hitting the West Coast. And you're giving the cable networks way too much credit. They're all probably too busy reseacrhing 1970's era typewriters or finding someone who saw Kerry once in Vietnam or other such issues that REALLY matter to the public.

The New York Times will report in its Sunday edition that US intelligence picked up suspicious movement of materials around several locations deep inside North Korea that US analysts believe could eventually become nuclear test sites.

The suspicious activities involve one location where possible conventional components of a nuclear bomb were tested last year, according to the report.

N.Korea is a small country. I doubt they have the space to test a nuke. They'd most likely test their weapons by using them. So I doubt this was a nuclear test.

Well, if it was a nuke large enough to produce said mushroom cloud; the undeniable evidence is now in the atmosphere, and as soon as the planes we fly to detect these things [the first confirmation that a reactor had exploded in Chernobyl came from these air sample plane thingys; radioisotopes are a bit like fingerprints, you can tell whats what from whats in the air; a reactor will produce a lot of one nuclide, while a nuke test, a whole different set.

First of all, there are no reports confirming that this blast was nuclear, and some of then are even saying that they suspect that it isn't. Second of all, North Korea has been trying to go nuclear since lord knows when, and we've been able to stop most of it without invasion.
