I want one and I'm going to ask my mom for one for my birthday or Christmas. Yet I have no clue about them. Technology moves way too fast for me.
So, who has one or has heard which brand is good or is it a waste of money?
I'm mainly looking at them because I fly quite often (don't have a laptop) and I'm usually alone and bored. I usually read but I'd like to have the option to watch my own movies. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!!

I would try and get at least a 7 inch LCD screen. And unless you plan on hooking it up to a TV, forget about the ones with remote controls, it is just extra money for shit you do not need.
Also check the weight, try and keep it at or below 2 pounds. the heavier the more annoyinig it is going to be to carry.
Also look for 16:9, since most DVD's are made this way. that way you waste none of your already small screen size.
Check for battery life and if you can purchase and add-on more batteries. for flights over 3 or 4 hours where you may want to watch a second movie, you may need the extra battery. Also, whatever the say is the battery life, take like 80% of that to be the truth. they test under optimal conditions.
Check this one out from Best Buy. its 300 bucks, 16:9, and should be about what you are looking for. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1077626054376&skuId=6315329&productCategoryId=pcmcat13900050018&type=product)
This one is a little smaller and lighter (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1072286329778&skuId=6272133&productCategoryId=pcmcat13900050018&type=product)

we bought my nephew a mintek portable dvd player to shut him up and play his sesame street dvds. I think it was around $200.
And when buying a portable dvd player, see if you can try it out. You want to make sure that the screen can be viewed from all angles, not just straight on. (Common problem with cheap lcds)
