Sports fans,
I was thinking back to when I was a Minnesota Vikings fan, and I remember the entire frigging reason I originally like the team was the Helmet, and the colors. I liked the purple viking concept, go figure. Anyway, that was it. No outside influence, one day as a yungun' I declared, I like Vikes.
Suck being me whenever Super Bowls are mentioned; and seeing Tark on infomercials, well...
Anyway; How did your team become your team?
Did you dig the LA Lakers coz of the strin of legends? Or dig the Celts coz of Bird? Yanks by default? Mets coz you're nearby? It's a family tradition? You fucked the Head Coach?
All I know is you guys have some serious loyalties to a bunch of teams, and defend them fiercly. That can also read: I was a science-nerd who really isnt tht much into organized sports. So I like sports, but my wedding didnt have colors matching the NY Rangers, like one I went to.
Theres a bunch of sports, so for each, what your team, and more importantly: why?

I just root root root for the home team. From The Bronx, I'm naturally a Yankee fan, and the Knicks are the only NY basketball team, so they're my team as well. And when the Nets come to Brooklyn, that's just too bad, cuz I don't care.

are we brothers?
actually i got into the Vikings at approx age 6 or 7 for the very same reasons and plus it was a team my eldest brother liked... kind of the same way i got into Grand Funk...
i eventually gave up on them after the Atlanta NFC Championship game(99?)... they could fuck up a wet dream
Viking Records
> worst trade in League history - Herschel Walker
> gave up longest run from scrimmage - 99yds Tony Dorsett
> gave up most running yards in a game - Walter Payton - 275?
> lost 4 Superbowls - one of them they had the least amount of first downs for a SB
> Vinnie Testaverde had a 46 yard touchdown run against them VINNY TESTAVERDE!!!!!
> Steve Young had a 63 yard touchdown run against them - What other team can you name that has ever given up such touchdown runs to a quarterback??????
> Field goal kicker makes every field goal up until the one that sends them to the Superbowl
> last year they give up a 4th and 25(for a TD) with no time left to knock themselves out of the playoffs...
my younger brother is still a die-hard but then i guess he has to be, he had the Viking Head emblem tattooed(sp?) on his arm...

NY Knicks-- their not my team but I rooted for these players Gerald Wilkins, Kiki Vandewaghe and Charles Smith.
NJ Nets-- sure they sucked but their as local as can be. Plus Mike O'Koren was a former player and assistant coach (when I was younger I remember eating at Larry and Joe's pizzaria in Jersey City and always wondered why they had his pic on the wall--now I know--he's from the neighboorhood). I used to bring my basketball team annually to watch the NETS when most of the people would be rooting for the other team. When the NETS got good I saw alot of my friends jump the bandwagon asking me if I was getting NETs tickets (the same people who I couldn't give away $5.00 tix to watch a NETS game when they had that promotion one year).

For Hockey:
NJ Devils-- same things as the NETS, sure they sucked for a long time but that's what made their 1st Stanley Cup sweet but bitter too with talks of them leaving. Was resistant to the Devils getting rid of the "Green" for the more cooler "Black" shoulder stripe but what can you do about it? Used to attend a couple of Devils and Nets games a year but with increase ticket prices and my wallet not being as big as it used to had to cut alot of it out (but if they play the Senators I try to make a game).
Ottawa Senators--- they sucked really bad too for a long time like the Devils, but damn they had some nice looking Jerseys so I followed them plus they had some interesting names to like Yashin, Daigle, Cunneyworth, Bonk, Tugnutt, Rhodes. Eventually getting a top pick in every draft paid off. How can you not like the Ottawa Team history---had a team, folded, Senators re-from after several years, bunkruptcy,-------come one, everyone likes rooting for the underdog.
When I play EA Sports hockey I pick the Senators or the Devils.

Baseball:
NY Yankees-- my dad was a Yankee fan, so I liked the Yankees growing up. I remember going to Burger King for the Yankee cards and trading them with my friends....but......
Cleveland Indians-- this was my team when the INDIANS really sucked (I don't know why but I liked this team for some reason--musta been the Indian design or something). I used to be able to name the players like Pat Tabler, Brook Jacoby, Mel Hall, Cory Snyder, Bud Black, Phil Nieko, etc.
I don't follow pro baseball anymore but if I did and they continue to plain out suck for a couple of more years I'd root for the NY Mets. Most of the baseball games that I attend if I go to a baseball game are when I get free tickets.
And just because it's Newark, I like the Newark Bears baseball team.

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.
oh wait, thats how they became the a-team
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life

Steelers- They were winning the Supr Bowl every year when I was a kid.
Islanders- See above.
Celtics- Larry Bird
Notre Dame football- They are named "The Fighting Irish"
Now onto my beloved Mets. I'm not really sure why I started to like the Mets. They were terrible when I was a kid. I'm sure it wasn't George Bamburger's electric personality. But in 1984 I saw a kid named Dwight Gooden pitch and I was a fan for life.

Football:
NY Giants-- same with the Yankees.....my dad was a Giants fan so I became one (I used to remember him getting mad at the t.v. set when the Giants would lose--"Lousy Giants" he used to say). Always rooted for Gary Reasons and Maurice Carthon (NJ Generals).
NY Jets-- always rooted for Ken O'Brien.
NJ Generals (USFL)-- too bad they folded before we could have seen the Jim Kelly vs. Doug Flutie QB contraversy. I remember the radio ad on the airwaves promoting the NJ Generals. Now if I see the ESPN classic network showing NJ Generals games I watch it.
NY/NJ Knights-- Run and Shoot anyone? I liked the emblem design and how can you not like the black jerseys?
NJ Hitmen (XFL)-- yeah I supported them for that 1 year as a season ticket holder but they didn't stay around too long for me to become a "my team". I think O&A was there one time I went to a game. There also was they dude that always brought this BIG black hat to him to a game in my section.
NJ Redogs/Gladiators (Arena)-- Another season ticket holder right here. Robert Stewart (#77), the cheerleaders and stepping on the field after the game to get autographs.....now that's fan friendly. But alas they left for Las Vegas. I never forget when me and my friends were eating at the Popeye's after the game and some of the players from the game came in to buy food and my friend said "Wow, they must not be making alot of money".

I'd grown up a Cowboys fan, a family legacy since my dad's originally from Texas. But my main team is the Titans. I live now and have lived most of my life in Nashville. But I didn't give a shit about them until the Music City Miracle. I was doing drill at a VA Hospital and another nurse and I were put to work at a mental ward. So we watched the Bills/Titans game with the patients. That was the first and only time I ever cried during a game.

Other sports:
NY/NJ MetroStars (Soccer)-- rooting for the local team.
NY Liberty (WNBA)-- I coach girls basketball and they have always been helpful in my request for getting free tixs so I can bring my team to watch woman's basketball. Never forget that one year where I was able to get a "Welcome to the Garden" for my girls basketball team on the big screen at the Garden. Now only if they can win a champoinship.
NJ Hitman (LaCrosse)-- Season ticket holder but alas they moved. Always loved watching college LaCrosse on t.v. So is my Jayson Williams NJ Hitman Bobbing Head doll worth anything?
Harness Racing-- my favorite jockeys at the Meadowlands are Ron Pierce & Brian Sears.

By default, I have been a Phillies, Eagles and Flyers fan since I was a kid cause I grew up in the Philadelphia area. The Sixers I didn't start liking until around 1985 or so but I was and still am not that big of a fan. I just kind of watch here and there. Never have been all that much of a NBA fan but I have recently started loving NCAA B-Ball because of how fun the St. Joseph's Hawks have been the last few years.
Now for the oddball out of town teams.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 1982 - 2003
I started to like the Bucs because I felt so sorry for them when Dallas KILLED them in the 1982 Divisional Playoffs. Being an Eagle fan, Dallas hatred was bred into me and the Bucs seemed a natural liking as well. I also loved the colours and Doug Williams and Lee Roy Selmon was the absolute shit. Around 1990 or so when the Bucs and Eagles both stank, I said "No way these to teams will ever play a meaningful game". I will always have loyalty to the home teams and as heartbreaking as it was I had to root against Tampa and shun them like a coke laden Amish Teen in the 2003 NFC Championship. I then made my Number 2 NFL team the........
Cincinnatti Bengals - 1982 - Present
I just have always had this thing with rooting for a losing squad cause of pity and just, I don't know why. It just felt good for some reason i guess cause here in Philly we are so used to losing, I just naturally drifted towards the losing franchises. I had remembered as a kid having the at the time NEW Bengals mini helmet that the stripes were never right on so I made my own with black electrical tape. Looked pretty cool. I liked their uniforms as a kid too because they looked like Garfield. I also rooted for them in their two Super Bowls in 1982 and in 1985 I think. I liked Kenny Anderson and ickey Woods and Cris Collinsworth and Anthony Munoz. How can you not like a guy named Ickey! I say now, "No way these to teams will ever play a meaningful game". Come December I may be eating those words. The Eagles COULD be 15 - 0. The Bengals may NEED a win to make the Playoffs. Just kill me if that happens.
Montreal Canadiens - 1986 - present
Kind of has to do with my fascination of Canada here but I started liking the Canadiens because of Guy Lafleur. In our one local paper there was this article about how there was a tribvute night to Guy in Montreal and there was a picture of him and his little girl and his wife. I always liked that shot and just really because a fan then. I couldn't help but really liking him and the Canadiens more when as a 12 year old kid, I wrote to Guy AND the Canadiens and received an autographed photo and program of his tribute night and got team player cards of most of the great layers of that era. I studied the history of the team and the pinnacle of that fandom came at the Hockey Hall of Fame where I walked through the exact replica of the old Forum Locker Room. Talk about chills. That place was just so damn cool.
Cleveland Indians - 1988 - present
When I got the 1988 Sports Illustrated Baseball Preview and it had the Indians Big Threat of Cory Snyder and Joe Carter.

Sure it may have been a curse for years to come but something about the logo also got me hooked a little bit and they became my AL team. There was my ultimate joy of finally seeing The Tribe having the best chance at winning the World Series in 1997 and I remember this night as if it were yesterday (like i did with the clinching Series wins to get there) when Jose Mesa blew it. To the Marlins who would screw me years later as my Phillies with Jose Mesa would also fall to the fins of the fish. The Indians are on an uprise again after pretty much blowing up the team after thoise AL Central Pennant winning years. The Jim Thome issue, hated to lose him in Cleveland but knew what we were getting in Philly. It is time like those where I should really just stick with my home teams. It is kind of hard though.
Recently in the last 3 to 4 years I have also adopted:

Mojo I was so young I dont even remember those towns.
My mom claims a tornado was clearly visible where they were one night, and she claims it was my birthday, aug 16, it would be between 1964-68, and she says I saw this too. I dont remember a thing. You ever hear of a tornado about that time?
I know tornado alley but I dont know how far north, or east, it goes, so I dont know how rare of a thing this would be there.
Just trying to seperate fact from fiction from my childhood memories. I mean besides having to keep pointing to the doll where they all touched me during that one day of recess.
Did i type that?

I grew up about 10 mins outside of DC in MD....So I root for the Red Sox until we get our own team in DC...to hell with the Orioles and their jackoff owner
i'm also a Huge fan of Caps hockey, and of course anything Maryland Terrapins(football, basketball) cause thats where I goes to school
As for NFL football, i root for the Raiders. Everyone in my family is a big Redskins fan, and i wanted to root for someone else, so when i saw Bo Jackson run over Brian Bosworth, and read my history books and saw the Raiders had always taken people no one else wanted and whupped up on everybody, they became my team..

I rooted for the teams that my father brought me to see as a child, which were the Devils, Nets and Yankees. I didn't get into football until I was older, and I became an Eagles fan because of Randall Cunningham. Plus, by that time my father was working in Philly and was able to get Eagles tickets more easily. It killed him, a Giant fan having to get tickets and bring his son to Eagles games. I'm sure it took years off his life.

I liked the Yanks, Devils, and Knickerbockers cause they were all the 'home team' for me. It was that simple in those cases.
I started liking the Dallas Cowboys cause two older kids I hung out with when I was younger loved them. So I was always around them while they would root for the Cowboys and soon enough I became a huge Cowboy fan.

I liked the purple viking concept, go figure. Anyway, that was it. No outside influence, one day as a yungun' I declared, I like Vikes.
That might be exactly what i'd type except replace Vikes with Ravens. I started getting big into football in 1996 and they were the new team so I decided i'd be like their first fan. I kinda liked the Texans the same way, plus they got Jermaine Lewis and Jamie Sharper from the Ravens in the expansion draft (then they got rid of Lewis and it really wasn't worth rooting for them)
I'm basically a Mets and SAWX fan because I hate the Yankees. Like 70% of the Yankees fans I know are dirty front-running whores. So just naturally hate the Yanks for that.
I guess if I had team in hockey they'd be the Maple Leafs. Liked the Maple Leafs from like 94 when they had Wendell Clark, Andreychuck, Gilmour, Ellett, etc. and chose them as the team I'd play as in NHL '95 (came out in 94). Blue jerseys were/are pretty cool too.
Not a big basketball fan of any team particularly. Anti-Lakers fan and like guys like Dirk, Nash, Brent Barry and Pau Gasol. Maybe Larry Bird's theory is right.........

Mets-I live right by the stadium, on top of all my family hates the Yankees
Rangers-NY team
Metrostars-I love soccer and have been a proud supporter of them since 1996 (and proud member of the ESC since 2000)
Manchester United-I've loved English Soccer since I started college (samw time I got the internet). At the time everyome was supporting Arsenal and Newcasle United. I went with Man U because it pissed off most of my friends (who supported other EPL clubs), plus recently, I found that part of my family lived in Manchester before coming here to the states (not too far from Old Trafford)

Wow....one of the more interesting threads I have seen yet. (IMHO)
Anyway....as far as MY teams...
Hockey- NJ Devils. I went to see my first hockey game when I was like 14-15 years old. The devils were only about 2-3 years old in the state. I just started rooting for them because of location at first. Then they had a really good run in 1988 with a bunch of good players like Brendan Shanahan . Then the Rangers were pummeling them and the fans started getting really rough on the Devils. After EA Sports NHL 1994 came out for Sega I started playing and then I was hooked on Hockey. I love the game and I can learn to root for some teams (as long as they are not playing against the Devils). But for the Devils it was Location 1st and then just grew to love the game and the team because of how they play. It IS satisfying to know I was rooting for a team when they were at the bottom of the barrel.
Baseball- N.Y. Yankees. As I was growing up I just watched the Yanks win time and time again (this was the 70's) and my father actually went to a World Series game. I was so jealous. I remember when Thurman Munson died. I was crushed. And then my hero...Don Mattingly came to the Yanks. After that how could I root for anyone else? And for all you Yankee haters who think it was win win win all the time...they SUCKED in the 80's so it was tough then too.
Football- NY Giants/Pittburgh Steelers (70's) I was a HUGE fan of the Steel Curtain and the Offense Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, Rocky Blier. Just was incredible to watch. Then the Giants came to town when I was 7 years old. My uncle and Father accquired seasons tickets and I have been going to games since I was 12 years old. Watched Allie Sherman kill the team and Coach Tuna build us up and make us proud to be fans again. Just loved going to games and loved the power and finesse. Yes we had to suffer through Coaches like Ray Handley but it was just awsome to have been to not only one but TWO NFC Championships.
I think I am fiercly loayal for a few reasons, some of them are because a) watching them play they take me away from all of the problems we all hae to face, money, bills, personal shit, and we forget about them for the 3-4 hours of the time we all seem to be rooting for or against those players and teams. I know I love the days when I am going to a Giants game because I spend most of the time just gearing up for and winding down from a great fall afternoon of tailgating and roaring with over 80,000 other fans. Great stress relief.

I've always liked the Yankees, but I didn't really start to become a diehard fan until 1984, which I believe was Donnie Baseballs' first full season. I remember watching him and Dave Winfield compete for the Batting Crown, which Don won in his last at bat of the season. They had absolutely no hope to make the playoffs, but the batting title rivalry was just fantastic.

When my family moved here in 1988, my brother and I had the fortune of picking new favorite teams. Since my brother is a tool, he took the Mets and the Giants, because those were the 2 NY sports teams that were riding high at the time. I took the Yankees and the Jets. Now, since they started this latest run, my brother swears he is, was and always has been a Yankees fan, but I know the truth. Jackass.
As far as hockey and basketball go, I really don't care. I support the Devils and the Nets, because I'm a homer, but I don't live and die with their seasons.

Philadelphia. Born and bred and natural enemy to Giants, Cowboys and Devils fans.
Alas, they are not worthy opponents.

-Baseball: Oakland A's, I moved there in the late 80's with my father's family, and the A's ruled town. Canseco and McGwire launching homers into the seats and Dave Stewart throwing at everyone's face.
-Hockey: Edmonton Oilers, once again late 80's. I stumbled upon a game flipping through the tv and I really liked their color scheme on their uniforms, the fact that they owned the NHL after the Isles were done was purely coincidence.
-Basketball: New York Knicks, didn't care for the NBA while I was in California, when I came back the Knicks were tearing it up.
-Football: New York Giants, no Oakland football when I was a kid so I chose the Giants when I came back. I cheered for Cleveland when they came back to the NFL but that wave is over.
-Other teams are Michigan football, Tar Heel Basketball and Titan baseball (Cal State Fullerton)
October 1988 and I had just moved to Los Angeles.
Two Words - Kirk Gibson

Thanks to my sweet baboo!

Just like mine
Even though I was raised as a Yankee fan, it was a visit to Fenway Park and this guy that made me become a Sox fan:

Jim Rice was my favorite ballplayer as a kid. I batted like him, tried to have an arm like him and wore #14 like him. Had I been told the pain I would have to endure as a Sox fan maybe I would have stayed a Yankee fan.
But, my Dad also raised me to be a Celtics fan and I have always kept that. I even remember when Hondo (Havlicek) retired back in 1977!
