Now look, I don't want to become the drunk guy who comes on here and posts crazy comments at all hours of the night but something about this link really bothers me. I was just watching television and I saw an ad for the Freedom Tower Silver Dollar. Not only are they selling an American dollar ("$1") for 29.95. but nowhere in the description of said dollar are they giving any money to the families of 9-11, or in the least giving any money to anything related to 9-11. It just disgusts me that anyone is making money off 9-11. Call me an idealist, but I'd like to think that products based solely of 9-11 should at least have some of their profits returned back to the people who lost loved ones in the horrible incident. I don't know, maybe I'm overreacting, but I think it's a horrible thing to profit off of.

PS I'm, seriosuly willing to adapt my view if someone can show me some sort of discalimer explaining where the profits of this silver dollar will go, beacuse, frankly, I couldn't find it.

Yeah, but how many of these "charities" are giving most of their money to victims' funds? They could just be sending a dollar from each sale of their little trinkets, and they can technically say, "portions of each sale go to charity."

They're all in it for a buck.

Just back from visiting Mom, bringing her the Sunday Papers and sat down to watch the Weather Channel with her for a bit, and there it was, a TV commercial hawking the Freedom Tower Coin.

What the Fuck?

This was in another thread, but its an ad that blew my mind so much I tore it out of whatever Sunday Supplement thingy and scanned it.

It says the company '...and its affiliates...' have given money to 'help'. Why does that come off as 'someone else paid' to me?

How fucking sick is that? Why not include a couple of scale model planes so you show show your friends where the people were vaporized. Maybe I'm going overboard; but I really dislike the NY Skyline as it is now, and I'm not sure what should be at the site, but I sure dont like the tower, even aesthetically... ack. And this ad?

Sounds exactly like that to me, too.

Mike, in that pic I can't make out the actual size. Please tell me it doesn't say "9 1/11in"

What a fucking scam.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Mint advised consumers Friday that a widely advertised coin commemorating the World Trade Center is not a genuine U.S. coin.
National Collectors Mint Inc. has been marketing the "2004 'Freedom Tower' Silver Dollar," which it claims has been created using silver from Ground Zero, the site where the World Trade Center towers fell Sept. 11, 2001.
One side of the coin shows the Freedom Tower planned for the site and bears the phrase "In God We Trust." The other side shows the old Manhattan skyline, with the World Trade Center still standing, and the phrase "One dollar." The company marketing the coin says it is the first "legally authorized government issue silver dollar ... to commemorate the World Trade Center and the new Freedom Tower."
The company is not connected to the U.S. government, the U.S. Mint said Friday. The U.S. Mint is the only government entity in the United States with the authority to coin money.
National Collectors Mint is advertising the coins as products of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The U.S. Mint said the commonwealth, as a U.S. insular possession, does not have the authority to coin its own money.

The Freedom Tower Silver Dollar coin is absolutely fake. It is not government issued. It is not real currency, in fact that U.S. Mint went to so far as to have a press confernce on this particular coing that is being advertised as "goverment issued"but it's bullshit. See here (http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/index.cfm?action=press_release&ID=535) for the official statement from the U.S. Mint.

Also there is no documented proof whatsoever that the silver used in the coins was actually extracted from silver found at ground zero. There is also no evidence that any of the money made on these coins are actually going to any charitable organization or victims families. Avoid this piece of shit coin and the scumbags selling it.

I was just thinking the other day with all the coins and those ribbons and all the other patriotic potpurri for sale these days who does the money go to? The guy at the flea market or the street corner with the United We Stand T-Shirt or the WTC Memorial T-Shirt or those stupid FUCKING ribbons Reef mentioned a few weeks back or anything like that that is just capitalizing on a tragedy and/or the Iraq/terrorism situation is just pretty tasteless in my view. Weren't there those sidewalk vendors selling photos of the WTC after September 11? I know we as a people are very patriotic but for people to take advantage of that and just think that any schmuck will schill out $15 for a t-shirt or a framed photo regardless of quality or one of those ribbons is pretty sad.

Besides, they always just say "portions of the money goes to 9/111 charities." "Portions" could mean a nickel from each sale.

patriotic potpurri

such a good term for all this "crap." agreed on the dishonesty and bullshit of these companies and people trying to profit/ capitalize on a tragedy and the current sentiments of our nation.

i bought 2 ribbons recently, but from an individual selling them for the rotary club - all proceeds going to the troops. i actually put them on my filing cabinent - a really don't feel i should have to prove my patriotism.

but when i was in li last week i was in the 711 in no babylon, off the dpa. they were selling the ribbons just to sell them. it kind of gave me another reason not to sport 1 on my car.

Oh yeah, I mentioned in the Flea Market thread; some of these places just Crawl with 9/11 stuff; the bootleg NYPD and FDNY stuff I walked past just today I was like 'you have GOT to be Kidding.' T-shirts, caps, stickers galore.

I actually Wanted an NYPD T-shirt but one from the NYPD, and that took some research to make sure the money was going where it was going.
