Why don't the Yankees players have their last names across the back of their uniforms?
When did their take the names off and why?
I need a die-hard Yankee historian/fan to please give me the answer.
Thanks

NEVER had them...NEVER will. It's as much a part of the tradition as the pinstripes & the interlocking NY. It was a HUGE decision a few year ago when they allowed a small grey stripe to be part of their managers/warm-up jackets because the home uniform had never had anything but navy & white. No names are on the horizon.

How did the team get away with not following suit when every other team in baseball has the names on the uniforms

Other teams besides the Yankees don't have their their players' names on the back. Most do.

I guess I never noticed that. Which other names skipped out on having the player names on?
Apparently, the League must not require it

I know the Red Sox have no name on their home jerseys, but I think they have them on the road uniforms.

The Yankees were also the first team to wear numbers on their uniforms for every game! More interestingly, the numbers were given out according to their place in the batting order. Hence Babe Ruth who batted third was number 3, Lou Gehrig who batted cleanup was number 4, Tony Lazzeri was number 5 and so on! I bet you little miscreants didn't know that! Don't have any misgivings of your mistakes, miscreants!!

The whole concept of not having names on the jerseys is that the team is more important than the individual. Kinda the No I in Team idea. Penn State does it in Football I believe.
And East Side Dave, not only were the Yanks the first to use numbers to designate the lineup order, Lou Gehrig's #4 was the first jersey to be retired in any sport.
And thanks Boondock, I have to stop drinking so early.

Not only were the Cleveland Indians the first big league club to wear uniform numbers, they were the first to wear numbers on the back of their jerseys. The practice has often been credited as originating with the New York Yankees in 1929, as the reigning World Champions were scheduled to open the season donning uniforms with the new numbering style. However, rain cancelled the Yankees' April 16 home opener, while the Indians were blessed with clear skies that same day. By, the mid-1930s, every major league had adopted uniform numbers, though it was not until 1937 that the Philadelphia Athletics donned numbers on their home, as well as road, uniforms.
This should answer your uniform questions. (http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/exhibits/online_exhibits/dressed_to_the_nines/numbers.htm)
edit: Also, Gehrig wore #4 not #3. That was the Babe.

So basically, the numbers and the names are on the shirts so the home town team knows who to heckle on the visitor's side.

In 1929 the Yankees wore numbers on their backs, the first team to do so on a permanent basis. -from BaseballLibrary.com

And one of the Mets' 6 variations of their home jersey doesn't have the name either. I think it's the plain white one, without the pinstripes.

It's a bit of arrogance. Everyone knows who the yankees are, they dont need to have their names on the back.

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees announce they will put numbers on the backs of their uniforms, becoming the first baseball team to start continuous use of the numbers. The first numbers are based on positions in the batting order; thus, Babe Ruth will wear number three and Lou Gehrig 4. In a few weeks, the Indians announce that they, too, will put numbers on the uniforms
Thus, the Yankees officially stated that they were going to do it permanently before the Indians- so I give it technically to the Yanks!!! Yankees started everything! Yankees started winning and tradition and championships and hall of fame and lollipops and puppies yankees rule and they created you, too!!

You asked why?
So that Michael Kay could say the same line over and over again for us to hear...
"no name across the back of the uniforms..........
(wait about 5 seconds)
...of course"
Damn that was annoying.

Most of you were on the right track. I called the Yankees themselves.
According to them, it is tradition. (As several of you said). The Yankees have enjoyed so my success throughout their history that they decided to pay homage to that history.
Their all-time great players wore uniforms without names because everyone knew the names of the players (As several of you also said). Therefore, the Yankees stayed with that tradition.
