Over the course of the last few days I have seen something quite scary that even I as a misled youth participated in. The turned up collar on a polo shirt. I have seen 4 people so far with this and I sure as hell hope it is not some reoccurring fashion trend. Like the Revenge of the Preppy Scum or something like that.
Apparently so... (http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2004-08-22-preppy_x.htm)
Recently it has been like there is no real current fashion trend it is like a Best of or Worst of in some cases of the last 20 years. Like a bad combonation of 70's Disco meets 80's Miami Vice type thingy.
What the hell?
I found this while doing research on a Yale Messageboard. Apparently the socially elite scum do not wear their collars up as his hoity toity school, the dirty poor do. I'm confused.
I do not know where the "collar up" fashion/social statement started but I must mention that at my current university it is only worn by those who we (the society elite) consider as inferior. The first time we noticed this fashion statement on campus it was being sported by the "king" of blue collar society. Of course, we could not help to associate this new trend with the blue collar population. I was not aware that the turned up collar was yet another way we distinguish ourselves from the dirt of society. However, I must disagree and urge that while I do own quite a few Polo shirts the words "Polo" and "Designer clothing" should never be used in the same sentence. The label "Designer" should only be reserved for such names as Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, and Armani (not Armani Exchange; i.e. The Poor Man's Armani, why do you think the A/X logo is so visible?...so we can better spot the poor). Sure we have our beamers, money, vacation homes, and designer clothes, but if in fact this collar up trend is supposed to be adorned by high society I can not help but to wonder why it is spreading to the poorest of campus society. Next thing we know they will be asking to join our gentlemen societies and staring at our beauty queen girlfriends. While it is sometimes sad to acknowledge that there is a social hierarchy in American society it is none the less a fact and should be accepted as such. Sure those reading this may consider myself and people like me as assholes, cocky, stuck-up, or arrogant; think what you will...but collars up or collars down...you know the elite when you see it. And if you're not the elite it is possible to become one but you may want to know that membership is limited and you are never fully considered one of us. You are nothing but publicity to keep the masses quiet and hopeful.
