I hate MTV and I hardly watch it. Hell, they fucking fired me. I do however make a habit of seeing the MTV awards. Why?

The VMA's have always been the pop culture mecca of the year, and there's usually one defining watercooler moment.

This thread is revelling in how BAD the awards are this year. Because they absolutely blow.

Hoobastank sounded awful when they played. Leader singer can't hit any notes. Same with Ashlee on the pre-show.

Hoobastank will always sound awful whether there in a bar in St. Louis or in the best recording studio in the world. That whole trifecta of shit was downright SUCK. Yellow card, Jet, and Hoobastank? Do they want people to hate their channel. They're doing a great job.

That last Outkast performance was fucking awesome. I like how he said "For the millionth goddamn time," that was fantastic.

The bad definitely outweighs the good when your shitty bands are yellowcard, good charlotte, and linkin park, and are also nominated for every category.

That Ray Charles thing was sad not because him being dead, but becasue MTV would waste there time trying to honor a legend that 90% of the kids in that audience haven't even heard.

I actually turned it off during the Spree. I dunno, something about the performance just irked me.

The whole show irked me. The show was just trying to hard, and a lack of host DEFINITELY hurt the show.

Was Joel Gallen and Beth McCarthy doing it this year? I heard Joel Gallen didn't produce this year because he did the DNC, but I wasn't sure.

HOOBASTANK doing "The Reason"

I'd vote less on the sound system and more on Axl being out of shape and having no voice to begin with for that fuck-up.

Here are the problems with the VMA's in a nutshell right now...

1) Confusing stage.

2) No host. No opening monologue. Usher starting the show with a slow song? I know it went into "Yeah!", but still.

3) Absolutely horrific sound and music mix. The mics died out about 10 times I can count off-hand.

4) The staged "spontaneous moments". The Usher VMA win revelation, the Matthew Lillard entrance, the Flaming Lips guy... I mean, seriously, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?!

5) I don't care if you're in Miami or not, Shaq did not deserve that kind of pomp and circumstance for his entrance.

6) Mase is out of his mind.

7) The only watercooler moment was Lenny, Alicia, and Stevie. I can't think of anything else that made me go, "Oooh! Ahhh!"

8) The horribly written and cheesy dialogue for the award presentations. Usually MTV doesn't do this.

9) No T&A. I guess MTV freaked over the Janet thing.

I hear ya but, I think MTV is actively TRYING to make it unconventional. I kinda like that they didnt follow the typical format. Save that stuff for the "real" award shows.
It was a horrible show. There was ZERO flow and continuity but, at the very least, they attempted to keep the viewer interested.
My big gripe was seeing seperate awards for BEST HIPHOP, BEST RAP, and BEST R&B but, the best director award was in the Pre-Show.
And I already mentioned the overall lack of Rock.

As annoying and pathetic as these awards shows are, nothing compares to the idiots I work with who treat these shows like it is their porn. They'll come over to my desk and be like "did you see what Gwen Stefani wore" or Britney this or that. They'll friggin' gush over this stuff like it's the hottest thing. Haven't they ever heard of porn? I'll hear about this show for days now.

For some reason Britney Spears ripping a fake outfit off to reveal a flesh colored outfit underneath is hot. Meanwhile I'll have seen a porn chick suck two cocks that came fresh out of some other porn chicks ass not even a day before. These shows do nothing for me in that regard.

I agree on that aspect of just oogling over these VMA and just flat out celebritiy girls. It just makes me vomit. Porn is so much easier and at least with porn you know the girls like to get dirty. Like you would ever see Beyonce or Britney doing a gape shot.

Anyway....

MTV2 is basically all rap. And MTV is just shitty rock mixed in with shitty rap.

So MTv used to be all videos and was pretty fun at one point and the The Real World takes over and destroy's tv ffoir the next 15 years. So here comes MTV2 which is a tyad bit cutting edge and shows some really cool videos. Then Digital Cable and you have MTVX. BY FAR the coolest channel I have ever seen. For my tastes all the punk, hardcore, metal and anything else let's say, extreme, is on this channel. Remember, MTV2 was playing a good part of rap and hip hop in those days as well and yes, sme of it was good, they needed MORE. One morning, June 1 2001, MTVX is off the air and here is MTV Jams. Just MORE of the hip hop and rap garbage that is on MTV2.

Just venting.

The "Choose or Loose" voting push was actually somewhat impressive when they first rolled it out in earnest back in '92, but since then it only exists to starkly contrast how the network now markets to kids under the age of 15, when their chief demographic USED to be 18-30-year-olds. Who are they think they'll "get" with this? Certainly nobody who can legally vote.

And fluff, MTVX IS still out there, it's just in very limited markets. I've got MTV Hits, and VH1 Hits, and they're pretty interchangable...thankfully, VH1 Classic saves the day. They've added a new show called "The Alternative" which is just classic alterna-rock videos from 1977-1993.

And as awkward and creepily John Kerry-like his daughters looked tonight, the Bush girls looked HORRENDOUS. Jenna looked like she drank about 18 cans of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup and then chased it with a few pounds of pizza.

I believe so... I kind've felt bad for these girls being they were booing but didn't they learn from the Linda Rondstat incident. Not that it would have made a big difference but they should not have said "vote for my dad", they should've just said 'please just get out and vote no matter what party you side with' It seemed like a cheap endorsement attempt

My comments:

1) Tony Hawk is old. Watching him try to hit any move on that poor excuse for a half pipe was amusing.

2) Bruce Willis is a fucking loser. You're a grown man. Stop trying to play it cool on Sean John's boat in that flashy white shirt with the first four buttons unbuttoned.

3) Shaka Khan should not go on a walk in the woods during hunting season. Oofa toofa.

4) Hoobastank giving the kill sign when they realized they sucked...classic.

5) Trotting out Stevie Wonder to give yourself street cred has become an unimaginable bore...and I actually like Stevie Wonder. He's just become the go to guy when you want to prove to the world that you're a talented musician.

6) Chapelle wasn't really that edgy despite his warnings.

7) The combinations of presenters wasn't really that shocking. Mandy Moore hangs out with the Osbournes...is Marolyn Manson that crazy for her?

8) The show had a high energy level but was ultimately dull and uneventful. This was a tepid show for MTV. You couldn't even really see the stars as they were thrown all over the place due to the stage layout. Not a lot of star cut-to's either...they kept going to the same people...Latifah....Beyonce...Latifah....Beyonce.. ..Jay-Z...Kayne...

9) White people no longer have a place on MTV except as MTV staff. I found the squeezing of the rock acts into a quick three-part set was insulting to all rock fans. Glad to see half of Linkin Park not even showing up. I guess we all know what type of "music" in "music television is now.

10) The Real World ads were a disgrace. "People...will...hook...up". Is that what it's come to now? It's not even a show that documents people's lives anymore...now it's just watch em fight, watch em fuck.

the alicia keys looked cute when she won the award, and skanky performing ... and i can do without lenny kravitz being way too hip for the room ...

nelly and christina was interesting only for it being completely different ...

it's wierd that for an AWARD show that only four were given out in the first hour, more time was spent on the presenters' intoductions than the awards ...

the VMA seem to mirror the station now: less attention being paid to music, and more focus to personalities/celebrities ...

I don't think it was a conspiracy on anyone's part, but rather the fact that most fans of music are getting really tired of turning to a channel that barely plays music, trys to force feed whatever it's own agenda is down our throats. MTV plays barely any music and largely programs that nothing at all to do with music but rather the soap opera antics of stupid peoples lives. Personally by the time the Bush girls came out I was so tired of seeing all the voting junk and political stuff that it was mostly a turn off and I bet it's the same for others.

I doubt it has anything to do really with people being Anti-Kerry or even against his daughters, but rather about people who are trying to watch a music show being tired of the fact that the show had very little in the way of actual music.

I also hate how artists are forced to take three or four of their songs and play them all in like an 5 or 6 minute set jumping from one song to another instead of just playing that one song. I've always thought it was the stupidist waste of time. I think if it were me and I was asked to cut my song up and play a little of different songs I wouldn't do it. You either get the song as I intended it, or nothing.

Yellowcard is awesome. I don't know if you've only heard Ocean Avenue on the radio or MTV, but they're a pretty kick ass band. I don't know what you mean when you say they're "enchanced" either. Their last album had such a variety of different styles on it, all of them good, and their violin player kicks ass. I thought it was pretty cool how they looked so genuinely happy to recieve an award, as compared to the other "stars".

PS- I was pissed that SSX3 did not win for best videogame soundtrack...
