The color scheme, the little food court place near the entrance, I think possibly the smell...

That's cuz it IS Bradlees, with a different name.
Just like Bradlees was Caldor, with a different name.

I actually miss Woolworth's, especially the ones with the diner-deal inside.

Don't get me started with my geekdom of Department Stores and their histories.
A little fansite I go to (http://www.geocities.com/zayre88/index.html)
Target does, have quite the resemblance to Bradlees. I liked that store. Target is just a bit more upscale and it could beviewed as Bradlees of the New Age. Unlike when Ames started tog et their remodels in the late 90's and it totally looked like a spaceship in the store with the chrome ceilings. EECH!
I worked at Jamesway for about 5 years and we went through one major remodel that utilized the "corner" layout with all the store corners being dedicated to a main cornel wall and a big department. Toys, Electronics, Crafts and Domestics usually ruled these corners with Domestics also being on the back wall so when you would come into the store you would see a nice big wall of some fluffy towels. Do you want some fluffy towels? No, I didn't think so.
Jamesway really kicked themselves in the ass when in 96 they went throiugh yet another remodel after climbing out of Chapter 11 and spent all this money so they could compete with the onslaught of Wal-Mart and they ultimately failed cause they spent the cash but the sales never were there and they ultimately closed. I also take full responsibility for our old store closing cause I fucking RULED that place. The store closed 6 months after I left.
Then all the chains started to fall as Wal Mart took over and Bradles did come to an end. I loved that snack bar that they had in front of the sotre and even moreso, remember the Harvest House in Woolworth's? That place was the best! But they are all gone now thanks to Wal Mart. I hope that Target doesn't overexpand and begin to drown out each others stores cause that would be a travesty. There really are no other retail chains out there anymore except for the W and Target. Hill's, Ames, Bradlees, Jamesway and Woolworth's are gone. It really sucks cause they all used to be very friendly competitive chains in their regional bases and all the GM's got along. K-Mart was one of the first I think who really went national but look at them now. They are slumping.
Man did I ramble here, sorry. Retail is one of my other career choices and as sick as it may sound, I love it.

Same here. I miss the whole store itself, but going to the diner inside the store was always great for me as a kid. For me it was always a treat going there with my mom and getting a grilled cheese sammich and a soup. Or a hot dog, or cheese burger. It was just a different experience from other stores.

Right on!
The last old skool Woolworth's I've seen was when I lived down in Williamsburg, VA, and it closed about 12 years ago, but man, I was 12-14 when it was open, and I biked there all the time. Video games, trading cards, toys, books, clothes, bikes...the place had EVERYTHING...and the tuna melts RULED.
The going out of business-sale lasted a whole week, and I think I went every day. Leaving on the last day was one of my saddest moments as a kid.

I used to work at Stern's in Flushing and I remember going to that Woolworth's. Speaking of Flushing anyone remember RKO Keith's? I saw Halloween and Rocky there.

I remember 2 Woolworth's in the Cross County shopping center in Yonkers. I believe only one of them had a food area. I also remember a Woolworth's down on 231st and Broadway, which is now an Odd Job. I remember the last day it was open. Something like 7 years ago, I'd say. Kinda depressing.

I really miss Woolworth's.
The one in the Ocean County Mall of course had the little snack bar dealie, all done up in an orange, mustard and brown decor. Nothin' better than chowin' down on a Superpretzel and washing it down with a Slush Puppy. They had the crappy little black and white photobooth right there too. The best part about the photobooth, was that it was a perfect place to go and hide any ill gotten booty you just nicked of the shelves AND at the same time you could literally take a picture of yourself stealing from the store, wait for it to develop, and then have the big chuckle to yourself while you looked at it in the parking lot while chowing down on the huge bag of bite size Snickers you just stole. But remember kids, the key to being a good shoplifter is that you still have to buy something. So don't forget to grab two packs of gum from the shelf under the register, and by trained slight of hand, make sure only one goes on the counter, spend your 85 cents or whatever, and be cool about it.
And of course the was the retarded reject fish and bird section in the back.

Wow, those were the most depressing pet departments in the world. I remember a friend of mine going to buy a bunch of ratty looking goldfish, and they had to get one of the cashiers to come and fish them out. Dude puts 6 fish in a bag, ties it off, and burst the bag all over the floor. The clerk just dove right down, grabbed the fish, and tossed them back in the tank.
We didn't buy any fish that day.

Woolworth's was the best. I loved that place. Bradlees was good too. But at Woolworth's you could eat, shop and check out all the animals and they had coin operated rides. I loved going there as a kid.
I've only been to Target once (since I can walk to Wal-Mart). But it looks a lot better than all of the above.
