View Full Version : What song Defines a Group?
Mike Teacher

R+F had a segment where people were calling in with, I cant remember exactly, but it was a lot of 1970s stuff. Sheesh cant remember the fucking segment. He was making a Mix Tape or something.
ANYway; with all the 'Best ___' music threads and That segment I wondered: Is there a Single Song that can adequately Define a Group?
Simply: If you could only play One song from a group or artist to show someone else: 'This is what they were about' What would that song be for a given group.
Example: Someone called in and mentioned ELO, Electric Light Orchestra. Huge in the 70s, then pffffft. Well, Ron was talking about the huge string of hits they had in the 70s, and up fades...
"Don't Bring Me Down' which is quite possibly the Shittiest ELO song ever.
=
Is it possible? Zep? Metallica? How you gonna show someone One song from a group that put out 'Achilles Last Stand' and 'All of My Love? Or 'Seek and Destroy' and 'Nothing Else Matters'?
=
Ministry was light, synthy dance music, and evolved into the Beast that put out 'Filth Pig' [the song].
One Group: One Song. Not the 'Best', or Most Popular necesarily, but the One Song that you can say: 'now THATS What They were All About!'
=
I'll go back to the Shitty ELO. Actually, I loved them, and would have 'Do Ya' as the song. Weird, coz first, technically, its a cover of The Move, and it's definately not my fave, but it strikes a balance.
And if I play 'Nutshell' by Alice In Chains one more time its gonna explode, and thats an acoustic song, but DAMN, those lyrics and that plodding sense of dread in that song... that's a Lot of what AIC was about, and that song aint even Electric.
Or Maybe 'Them Bones'? Fuck! Breaking thread rule in the Original Post!
Ok gotta pick only one: Them Bones

If it's AIC you're talking i don't think it could ever top "Down in a Hole". The acoustic shit is awesome too though, "Brother" was my favorite off of that whole Unplugged set.

For AIC, I'd either choose "Rooster" or "Man in the Box".
Rage Against the Machine - "Guerrilla Radio"

damn I completly forgot sbout 'One'.
Once I was sitting there trying not to be bored as a class was taking a test, and tapping the table in that machine-gun burst kick drum pattern, and one guy raises his head up and just says, 'Dude! Metallica! Sweet!' and then goes back to his test.
Not to mention one of the best/most fucked up videos of all time.

Picking one for CCR was tough, but I guess I'd start someone off with "Travelin' Band".

I almost went with Fortunate Son, but I felt it defined John more than the band.

I've heard a couple of the most unlikely bands cover that song (punk/hardcore bands) so that what i'm basing it on.
Plus it was a jeans commercial!

This thread is just a heated argument waiting to happen.
Hell yeah peeps take their music seriously, but we can disagree without being disagreeable.
Having said that, it took me 0.03 seconds to pick the GnR song that defines them.
'Reckless Life' off of 'Lies'
It's live, raw, and explodes out of the gate. Exactly what GnR was at its best; a Live, Rabid Beast of a band.
And I can think of a dozen others that are arguably better suited, but there ya go...

That's the best drumming part I've ever heard in a metal song. It's just so ..effective!
Radiohead - High and Dry
Radiohead - Paranoid Android, it's got the fasteness as their previous albums and their mellow-ness of the newer albums.
A really hard one: Nine Inch Nails.

Rush - Free Will
Whats that scene in 'High Fidelity' where the guys are reeling off songs, I think it was a mix tape for your own funeral [oh great another thread]; and the one guy names a song and Jack Black says something like:
Fuck me... I should have thought of that one...
anyway, Permanent Waves definately bridges that gap between the falsetto voiced, heavy guitar rush, and the later more Synths, and some albums [like grace under pressure] alex is essentially playing rhythmm guitar throughout the whole thing.
I wanna say Xanadu or The Camera Eye, argggh!!!
Nope its gotta be just One: Yep. Freewill.
Its an amazing studio track, and how the fuck they pull it off live, with that middle section of all three of them just shreading, that gets a Major cheer when they come out of that live.
