I really enjoy retail work. I like that fact the for the most part they promote from within, they are flexible with your schedule and they train you. The only thing is everywhere I seem to be looking pays SHIT! Minimum wage down here is only 6.25. So far I've had 2 jobs while down here. The first was telemarketing, that payed 10 an hour Full time. Unfortunately I didn't produce enough sales so they canned my ass. Then I knew I had a job waiting for me at Best Buy. Now even though I asked for 9 something, they were fair and gave me 8.00 to start and 4 months later a quarter raise. However it was only part time. I'm looking for another part time job. There were 2 places I went and interviewed with, and both of them want to pay 6.25. I don't get it, how is one with a shit load of experience supposed to get ahead. Juts think, here you are with at least 4 years of retail experience and still in that field making 8 something an hour looking for a part time or even full time job going to make 6.25 an hour. I don't get it wouldn't they want to pay you more for MORE experience? Or maybe think, wow you know this person has a shit load of experience, we should offer him more money and maybe even get him into a management training sometime soon. I just don't get it. Someone explain. I consider myself being a hard and dedicated worker no matter what the job requires. I am always giving it 110%. I have a natural talent for physical labor. I am looking for a career. One where I know I can have organic growth in.

I gave up retailing eight years ago when my daughter was born. Stern's and Macy's were making a bundle off of me and only paying 5.25 an hour. I opted to work in a office evironment so I won't have to think that customers are always right.

I was doing Rep work for PRN (http://www.prn.com) which is one of the best jobs i have ever had. I am still there just part time. I also had 10 years with Jamesway and Wal-Mart and was a virtual retail genius. I LOVE to merchandise and display my artistic talents through my stackbase and endcap displays. Even through 3 years of Floor Maintenence, I could not resist lending my hand in setting up displays and stocking. There is also nothing like helping people find what they are looking for and just giving them a great shopping experience. Yeah, its retail but I do love it. Crazy but content.

So I go part-time with PRN and my current boss directed me to NARMS (http://www.narms.com) which is a portal/job search base for retail merchandising. I got hired for a position within two days of going part time and have a full time spot lined up and am currently doing part time work now setting plan-o-grams and modulars for Lowe's. Firs three days were about 54 feet of Ceiling Tile and man did it kick my ass. But DAMN if it is not gratifying seeing a completed product and getting all hot, dirty and sweaty and just working hard. I really take pride in that.

And $12 an hour right off the bat is not bad. Not the $18.50 I was making with PRN but it is gonna pay the bills. Jamesway had me maxxed out at $7.75 an hour (1996) over the course of 5 years after starting at $4.75 and at Wal-Mart I topped out at $15.50 (2001) after starting at $8.00 over the course of 5 years with the company.

If I get your drift, I WISH I was doing Rep work for a PORN Company. How great would that be!

I'm currently looking for a part time in the retail business also. I applied at Best Buy last week, so I'm hoping they call me. I could really use the money these troubling times..lol

I worked in K-Mart on summer, working in the shoe department. Believe you me, I was the butt of all jokes within my group of loser friends. But little did they laugh when I had the money and they didn't.

Retail is for the birds. Did my time during high school and the first year of college.

Coorprate America is where the money is. $7/hr to deal with idiot customers all day is not worth it. Four times that to sit in a seat and be able to post this message is.

Truer words have never been spoken.

I mean, I'm sitting there salaried, full benefits, 401k and my own office, and I'm trying to convince someone that 40 hours a week at $7.50 an hour is a great thing. It's a constant uphill struggle, and usually we just end up looking like pricks. The gap between the hourly and salaried people in retail is just INSANE, and creates instant resentment, and rightfully so. And all the company allows is up to $0.75 in raises on annual review, and $0.50 for being bumped up to supervisorm, so at the MOST someone can increase a year is $1.25 an hour, and good fuckin' luck getting the front offices to approve that.
