A Local story just went National, I was going to post it but the paper it was in is so small they dont have the articles on a website. Anyway, my guess is this will not help the public relations stance of the RCC.
=
Long Story Short: A Church refuses to Recognize an Eight Year Old Sick Girls Holy Communion, because she Cant eat Wheat [Gluten], and the Church says if the Communion Wafer doesnt have Wheat, Its Not Valid.
=
From CNN
BRIELLE, New Jersey (AP) -- An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot eat wheat has had her first Holy Communion declared invalid because the wafer contained no wheat, violating Roman Catholic doctrine.
Church doctrine holds that Communion wafers, like the bread served at the Last Supper, must have at least some unleavened wheat. Church leaders are reluctant to change anything about the sacrament.
"This is not an issue to be determined at the diocesan or parish level, but has already been decided for the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world by Vatican authority," Trenton Bishop John M. Smith said in a statement last week.
Haley, a shy, brown-haired tomboy who loves surfing and hates wearing dresses, realizes the consequences of taking a wheat wafer.
"I'm on a gluten-free diet because I can't have wheat. I could die," she said last week.
Last year, as the third grader approached Holy Communion age in this Jersey Shore town, her mother told officials at St. Denis Catholic Church in Manasquan that the girl could not have the standard host.
After the church's pastor refused to allow a substitute, a priest at a nearby parish volunteered to offer one, and in May, Haley wore a white Communion dress, and received the sacrament alongside her mother, who had not taken Communion since she herself was diagnosed with the disease.

I believe this bishop was one of the guys raising a stink about giving pro-choice Democrats(including pre-gay McGreevey) communion a few months back.

just seems like another way these religious customs just don't make sense...
the priest at this Church is probably doing what he feels is right or just didn't want to bother thinking "if you do it for one then you'll have to do it for others' and it breaks tradition...
the girl and her mother should understand that she doesn't need a wafer to have Jesus or God in her heart...

It seems to me that the local parish priest knew of the girls condition and refused her communion to help her from getting sick...as far as the part about the wafer being made of wheat....well...that's what bread is

Actually, the pastor at the family's local church at first refused, and then a pastor from another local church offered to perform the communion with a non-wheat wafer, and the family accepted. Then the dicoese revoked the communion after the fact, a pretty low move, IMO.

My friend has the same disease where he can't have gluton, he's a celiac.
He just got married a few weeks ago and had to have a kosher eucharist at the wedding...it seemed like an oxymoron...

So that means the priests that DID do the bad stuff, and the church officials that covered it up for decades, don't count? I don't get what you were trying to get across.
Not to bust balls, reesh, but I was raised Catholic, had nothing but decent priests, but that doesn't excuse the scumbags that are ruining the modern Catholic church.

Yeah, and I was raised Catholic, my family is Catholic, my aunt is a VERY VERY devout Catholic, and, as with you, all the priests I know are good men.
But that doesn't mean I have to sit here and ignore it when the Church pulls shit like this on a little girl, or issues proclomations denouncing feminism, or refuses communion to politicians, or the sex scandal.

I'll be flat out honest with you, Mojo: in the recent "the Pope needs your prayers" thread, I debated whether to add a simple "I'll be seeing him in hell."
But I didn't because I thought some people might take that the wrong way.

My Opinion: God doesnt give a damn whats in the communion.
If some dude is lying on a battlefield dying and asks a priest for cummunion of make up whatever stupid scenario, I have a feeling a dying person reaching out to God can have whatever the heck they want; it's what's in the head and the heart.
Vatican II and the Infallability of the Pope and Evangelism and fundamentalism and a few other things lead me to believe if there's a God, it wants little to do with men who would say 'I know what God wants, and here's what it is.'

I'm a little confused. So, if St. Patrick's Day falls on a Friday during Lent, the Pope can change the rules so a bunch of drunks can have corned beef on rye, but they can't change a rule so a girl who chooses to accept Holy Communion won't die? I guess their rational is that if she dies with a little piece o' Jesus inside her, she'll go straight to heaven, not like us heathens throwing up boiled meat in a back alley somewhere.

This just another reason for me to think that the catholic church is retarded and fucked up. "No you can't be part of our club cause you dont eat our food...you'll die if you do?....piiiff so what, fuck you, now let's go molest some little boys."
Was the substitue blessed and made holy? If it was then who effing cares it was body of christ lite. They bless regular water and make it all special why not in this case for a sick little girl who has or had faith and wanted to be part of the church. They make such big effing deals about this, abortion, gay marriage but when it comes to them being even more wrong thatn usual they hush it up and put the pope out for display to distract the people. They hush their filthy little secrets because they can do no wrong. If priests were allowed to marry as in just about every other religion I don't think they would have to turn to child molestation to get their jollies.

Agreed, but they seem to keep Changing the rules. Eating meat on Friday went from sending you to hell to an afterthought. The bible wants you to not trim your beard, eat shellfish, or wear clothes made of two cloths. What happened with all of this?

If Christ was able to symbolically make bread into his body and wine into his blood, is it really that hard to turn rice into wheat or grape juice into wine?
Limiting transubstantiation to only certain items in a sense limits God's power. And it seems to me that anytime a group of people try to limit someone else's power (be it deity or human) they are quietly trying to increase their own.

Ok I am a devout catholic but this is going so far it is getting rediculous. Let me see if I get this straight... they have turned their heads when it came to the holocoust. They QUIETLY shuffle the priests who commit pedophilia, but they LOUDLY object to a girl who...at age 8...did not recieve the wafer that the church demands they serve at mass.
It would not matter if it was a loaf of Wonderbread...if the priest blesses it and says it is the body of Christ then....sorry to tell ya your holiness but it's the body of Christ.
The church needs to get it's priorities straight. I think they should celebrate another member whose wish was to receieve the sacrament, not spurn her because her digestive system does not work like everyone else's.
And they could try like hell to fix it now, but it is too late. As the saying goes 'Pandora's box has been opened' and now it is yet another reason why thousands of people shake their head in digust at the Roman Catholic church . It is times like this that makes me disgusted to call myself an Catholic. For a religion that is supposed to preach turning the other cheek and treat your neighbor as yourself, they are a rather intolerant bunch wouldn't you say????

If it's holy, if it's blessed, if it's the body of christ.... shouldn't they have faith that it would NOT kill her, even if it is wheat?

Why are we even having this discussion? I was born and raised Catholic. (comment for street cred only)
Nothing the church does surprises me. But in the end its their ballgame and they make the rules. The church is not and never has been a Democracy. So, if you're not happy tell them to fuck off and move on.
I mean seriously how many times can we continue to care what the assholes think or do? They have proven themselves without trust, without standards, selfish and criminal.
Time to fucking move on.

It matters here because it's a religion that millions of people believe in. They get their moral structure and beliefs from these same people that don't allow sick girls communion and molest little boys. If they were your average people noone would give a shit, but these preists are/were seen as high in society because of their status.

I don't believe in that stuff but that was HARSH! Maybe because I used to believe in it and I can't believe that I did.
I actually want it to stick around, because it keeps some people in line, enough not to be breaking moral boundaries, but not so much as to make them door to door salespeople for their religion.
