I was watching a show on channel 13 about Ronold Reagan. there was a segment about the fall of the Berlin Wall..I just happened to be Bamburg, Germany with my wife's family...we were watching the television when the wall fell...Her whole family went crazy,,,it was like the Fourth of July and New Year's eve all wrapped up together.....Then one of her uncle's said "What about the Easties?" than they all got quiet....Nobody liked the people form East Germany...They were still the enemy!!!!!!

Where were you???

I was in the SF Bay Area at the time and I think the full effect of that event was lost on the area because we were preoccupied with the Loma Prieta earthquake that we had on October 17. We were still digging people out from under the freeway. Or maybe I was high, I can't remember.

I was 10, and I happened to be in Germany, of all places.

Not in Berlin, mind you, but one of the US military bases. My family and another family we were friends with were on a two week-long vacation through Germany and then down into Italy, staying at the various US military bases along the way, and that happened like our second or third night in Germany (This is when we lived in Paris, so it's not like we flew across the ocean for this trip). I THINK the base was the hilariously-named Rammstein air force base, bit I could be wrong. I might be thinking of THAT base because that was the one we'd go to every couple of months to do our big shopping excursion for American groceries (France never let America put permanent bases in her borders).

Anyway, we watched the thing live on German TV, and people were outside celebrating on the base, lighting off fireworks, so I remember going to see that. My cousin Kelly was 24 and was living with us, and she and her boyfriend up and drove to Berlin as opposed to continuing on the trip with the rest of us, and she brought back three big pieces of the Wall for me that I still have to this day.

Mainly I remember my dad just telling me a couple times that I was witnessing history and would always remember that night...and he was right.

"I THINK the base was the hilariously-named Rammstein air force base, bit I could be wrong. "

Why's that hilarious? If that's in reference to the band, they named themselves after a huge plane crash that happened at that base.

It's hilarious because now anytime I tell anyone where I was in Germany that day, the first image is of a homoerotic German metal band.

Hmmm. That is an Air Force base in Germany if you're thinking of the right one. It's also an excellent way to save money to travel through Europe staying at military bases and shopping there for groceries.

I'm a Middle East Studies major and you may have convinced me to pursue a double major.

By the way, 40 large would cover about a year of school today.

Since then, I think about it and get pissed that Ronald "Dutch" Reagan gets credit for doing what Solidarity and others did to throw off the yoke of commie bondage.
