Well knowing the area of CA he was in I would be willing to lay good money down it was a Great White Shark. They said it was 16-18 feet long. Not many of the man eaters grow that length aside from the White shark (http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/08/18/shark.attack.ap/index.html)

No way, the fish have rights. I think we should cut all the arms, legs and heads off all the surfers. Then the sharks won't be tempted by all those tantalizing human apendages, which, frankly really look like they want to get bitten with their flapping and flailing! Any shark would have to bite those limbs just to keep the other sharks from teasing them for being herbivores. They're just sharks with urges dammit!
